Who better than DIAL stalwart Efdemin could wrap up the year on such a distinctly class-act type of note? Probably no one. He who’s become an absolute gem trader over the years through a string of epoch-making efforts, including the time-proof masterpiece that is “Decay” in 2014, drops by to grace us with a mesmeric Xmas tale by way of waving goodbye to 2022. Extruding elements of techno deepness out their usual cast to mingle them with that exploratory, jazz-inflected approach of his - subtly pairing the lingering beauty of stretched-out synths with that of free-flowing 4x4 grooves and haunting melodies, Efdemin entices us on a path of delectably focused and flavourful techno sensibility. An absolute pleasure and honour for us to round off 2022 in such good company.

New York has always been a metropolis that harbours that continuous cultural catalyst as its lights recede every night, that’s no secret. Perhaps what’s even more pressing, is the strong sentiment that its burrows, perhaps Brooklyn in particular, are representing that spirit of electronica more so than ever. The parties and artists that have emerged from that part of the world have certainly impacted the scene of late, none more so than our guest this week. The founder of Soul People Music, and shadowing the alias of Black Jazz Consortium, he’s progressed from his early days of producing hip hop and has levelled his assault firmly on those subsonic transmissions associated with his imprint, and no doubt the cities of the world that are comprised of a heavy touring schedule.

That lands us to this coming week. The East Coast is fronting for his return showing in Australia. Brisbane’s Subtrakt crew face up to kick the tour off this coming Thursday April 17 at Capulet, followed by Inner City Savanna on the Saturday in Melbourne, and closing with Mad Racket in Sydney the following Saturday. There’s a lot of big things happening this year already that are yet to be announced, but this is one of the best. Get onto this Australia. Fred P lines up Kana Broadcast 046. Just like contemporary hip-hop can feel far removed from its founding pillars (rapping, writing, b-boying & DJing) nowadays house and, more widely, dance music seem, sometimes, to get farther from, well, eliciting dancing. Under his main vehicle, his side conceptual moniker of Black Jazz Consortium or his occasional guise Anomaly, the Berlin based New Yorker Fred P. has been a quiet force channeling the very essential motion at the core of this music and culture for the last 15 years.

With influences reaching to the roots of American black music, UK’s broken beat and beyond, his unmistakably hypnotic brand of dance music is now occupying a central role in a scene over, below and parallel to the radar of marketed flavour of the week trends; one that is not looking to convince but to transmit a vision, constructing a message.

After releasing what is possibly the best house album of 2019 under Black Jazz Consortium, a slew of dancefloor movers that seem to suspend the listener in a timeless space and a series of very singular remixes, Fred P. comes back again with an incredibly soulful number for Apparel Music’s 10th anniversary double vinyl compilation.

To celebrate the release of this compilation and his contribution we asked the equally talented DJ to record a mix for us and sent a few questions to try to get some more insight into his vision and craft.
