RADIOPHONIC MONDAYS FEATURES ARTISTS Hugo Vasco Reis (PT)  and Fulya Uçanok (TR) 

Hugo Vasco Reis’ „Cinco Lugares Sobre a Fragilidade" (Five Places About Fragility) take us to the heartland of Portugal to five villages that, through field recordings, slowly reveal to the listener their very specific sonic characteristics of their natural and man-made environment, their daily activities and seasonal weather conditions. Sounds, as the composer writes, often „do not assume a major importance in our hearing.“ And yet these very sounds are what make possible the recognition of a place, the feeling of identification and belonging to a place. Indeed, these soundscapes are fragile, doomed to disappear irrevocably with economic progress, gentrification, and climate change. 

In FIVE PLACES ABOUT FRAGILITY I-V (2022), composer Hugo Vasco Reis creates a symbiosis between the development of an ecosystem and his artistic practice. The project is dedicated to the soundscapes of the ensuing villages:

Istanbul based composer, performer and researcher Fulya Uçanok expresses in her work the attraction and curiosity to attend others and „otherness“, and - as she writes - „to investigate interfaces of connection within social sound engagements.“ These inquiries are explored through collaborations with musicians and with non-human bodies; "more-than-human agents and physical material agents," as Uçanok explains. An excellent example of such investigations is the project S-wallow-ING I + II, in which the artist looks for ways to "sounding together": the two chirping swallows and her listening and responding musically to them.

amazonian words (2017) is based on a single field recording made in the Southern Peruvian Amazon Jungle in July 2016, which is the duration of the piece. My intention is simple: to share a little of how I hear spaces like this one. This piece invites us to creatively imagine new contexts for each and every sound that we hear. To ‘compose’ with the environment as you listen. Every single place during every single minute is unique. This is how I heard a section of the Peruvian Amazon @ Los Amigos Conservation station on July 6th, 2016 @ 9:15am. 

hearspace (2014) is an interactive piece of radio art composed for and through Irish radio by Karen Power. On March 23rd @ 9pm RTÉ lyric fm acted as a live conduit, through which Karen Power composed and performed a new composition for radio based on the idea of exploring the sounds of a particular time, place and memory. hearspace explores, isolates and uses specific RTÉ sound archives as a means of grounding listeners to a particular time, place and memory. These voices or sounds of Ireland, which are combined with Karen’s own sounds recorded throughout the world; from The Arctic to Laos, will bring listeners on real and imagined sonic journeys from their past and into their future. This work also features archival materials from other European Radio stations who were invited to submit their sonic snapshots.

once below (2015) by Karen Power is a double quadraphonic sound installation with intermittent soloists, which focuses on time, place and our ever-changing contexts of hearing. The entire work is based on recordings made in a bunker underneath Gesundbrunnen Station, Berlin. Most of the sounds recorded are not audible to our naked ears. They are hidden and yet feel very real and present. These sounds themselves adhere to their own rhythm and time, in which we play little part. 

Each performance is unique, as each performer brings his/her own context, approach and balance between composed and improvised materials to the same composed piece.

is this on? (2016) - In 1927, Cork City Gaol hosted one of Ireland’s earliest radio broadcasts, the simple sound of cartwheels on cobbles. RTÉ lyric fm has commissioned "is this on?," a new work for radio from renowned Irish composer Karen Power to mark the place of that first broadcast and to pay tribute to the profoundly significant contributions by women to Ireland’s turbulent history in the early twentieth century. "is this on?" combines; field recordings recorded by Karen from all over the world, RTÉ Lyric fm archival materials + inaudible sounds from Cork City Gaol itself. We together will move between real and imaginary worlds, times and spaces. We are here in this beautiful space, which creates 1 unique listening environment. Radio audiences are in a variety of other spaces surrounded by other contexts - whether they be passing traffic in a car, the kettle boiling in the kitchen. This piece is designed to trigger sonic connections with these known and unknown spaces. To allow you time to dream in and through sound. To bring you on a journey through Irelands past voices and times. To connect you to each other and at the same time highlight our individuality in the way you receive sound. 

human nature (2020) contains 18 new compositions by Irish composer Karen Power, which are tied together through the singular concept of pairing human with nature: 1 musician with 1 un-processed field recording.

RADIOPHONIC MONDAYS featuring sound and radio artists Celeste Oram (NZ), Anselm Caminada (CH), Micha Seidenberg (CH) and Valentina Pini (CH)

  The spotlight is on the radio art of composer and sound artist Celeste Oram. Her art is manifold and multifaceted, drawing on sonic and social histories, micro-cultures and utopias. Song and speech, sounds of instruments and electronic objects animate her art, as do ephemeral, elusive feedback phenomena and radiophonic experiments.  

Four works VERA WYSE MUNRO (a portray of a pioneering New Zealand ham radio broadcaster) FLYING DINOSAURS (a non-human, non-mammalian landscape sonification), QUESTIAN (an interview with a radio) and THE COOL OF THE DAY (an arrangement of Jean Ritchie’s song) will be aired intermingled with the work of three Swiss artists: In Anselm Caminadas RADIO RATIRAS a deserted gas station turns into a radio station airing a portrait of its alpin surroundings. Micha Seidenberg and Valentina Pini lend us their voices in OCD, a sonorous and multi-layered collage of vocal sounds, text fragments and wordplay.

The Qikiqtaaluk Deep Map (49’00)
 
"Qikiqtaaluk" is what the Inuit call Baffin Island, a large island situated directly across from Greenland in the Canadian territory of Nunavut. Robin Minard traveled there in the winter of 2012/2013 to search for traces of traditional Inuit culture. In and around the iced-in city of Iqaluit, Minard recorded a great variety of sounds. In “The Qikiqtaaluk Deep Map”, recordings of noise and silence, of acoustic cityscapes and baren frozen landscapes are intertwined with traditional Inuit throat singing and fragments of interviews with native people. ”The Inuit are traditionally a very patient people," says an Inuk from Iqaluit. "Therefore, they will have the patience to weave the old and the new into a modern way of life.”
 
“The Qikiqtaaluk Deep Map” was commissioned by Deutschlandfunk Kultur Berlin and WDR3 Cologne and was first broadcast in January 2014.

Kayapó – The Crying Chieftain Raoni (49’00)

In the spring of 2018, Robin Minard traveled to Brazil, where he participated in the week-long “Acampamento Terra Livre” (ATL) indigenous protests in Brasilia and then visited the Amazon rainforest north of Manaus. During the protests in Brasilia, Minard interviewed indigenous people, recorded their songs and stories, and documented their protests against the Brazilian government’s policies. These policies are causing the destruction of traditional indigenous lands and the extinction of indigenous people. Since the completion of the radio composition in 2019, the Covid crisis has only deepened the suffering of indigenous people in Brazil.

After the 2018 ATL protests, Minard traveled to the rainforest near Manaus to experience the beauty of the forest firsthand. With the help of a local guide, he spent a week collecting acoustic documentation. His field recordings paint vivid pictures of the forest: the sound of the sunrise from the depths of the rainforest, flocks of canaries gathering at sunset, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, bird calls, distant storms, gentle rain.

The work interweaves field recordings with indigenous voices and stories, as well as lists of murders committed against indigenous peoples for reasons of prejudice, greed and politics. The work paints a tragic picture of Brazil’s indigenous people and their struggle for survival.

“Kayapó – The Crying Chieftain Raoni” was commissioned by Deutschlandfunk Kultur Berlin and WDR3 Cologne and was first broadcast in May 2019. The work was a finalist in the Field Recording category of the Phonurgia Nova Awards (Paris 2019) and has since received several broadcasts in Europe. In 2021, Brazilian sound and radio artist Janete El Haouli collaborated with Robin Minard to create a Portuguese version of the work that was widely broadcast on radio and Internet within Brazil. The work is dedicated to the Kayapó and Guarani people of the Amazon rainforest and the Kayapó leader Raoni Metuktire.

SONIC MATTER_radio is a space where freshly composed music, abstract and concrete sounds, vocality, utterance and stillness coexist, insist and invites the listeners to experience new sonic territories. 
The radio is an essential partner of the December festival SONIC MATTER that acts also throughout the year, not only broadcasting but also "listening“: It listens carefully to artists ideas and concerns and shapes its programming in response, it listens to audiences’ reactions in an effort to provide opportunities for imagination and discovery. Thus, the SONIC MATTER_radio should always remain within earshot of its audience to build a lasting presence locally, nationally and internationally. 

Above all, SONIC MATTER_radio plays a lot of music. It sees itself as an information carrier for the festival as well as an art radio, so it broadcasts information about festival happenings, interviews with SONIC MATTER actors, livestreams, educational activities, contributions from our guest festivals and SONIC MATTER_openlab. SONIC MATTER_radio also presents artistic works developed specifically for the medium of radio.
