The music of Seba has a forensic, political, and metaphorical approach. She collects lost pieces by digging into musical archives. Her  process combines artistic material and their own sound, shaping it into a hybrid music. This is a process of relating to a collective memory, which tells an a-linear, historical narrative from the perspective of women of colour.  She works together with Betül Seyma Küpeli (Shayma) and they founded the artist duo Shayma & Seba. In their works they use middle eastern sounds and techno, house, acid and trap.

Austrian Apparel haben sich über die letzten Jahre den Ruf erarbeitet, bei ihren Live-Sets tonnenweise Synths & Drum-Machines anzuschleppen. Lieber einen Bandscheibenvorfall riskieren, als sich mit einem schnöden Laptop zufrieden geben. Anstatt sich den endlos beliebigen Weiten digitaler Soundproduktion auszuliefern, hat sich das Wiener Elektronik-Duo somit dafür entschieden, sich das alte Brian-Eno-Motto Kreativität durch Beschränkung zu Herzen zu nehmen. Soundtechnisch sind Austrian Apparel aber gerade deswegen State-of-the-Art und haben sich - auch wenn im Techno geerdet - dem modernen Songwriting verschrieben. So klingt 2020.

2020 legte der Wiener Live Act mit "AAplus" (AA+ Records) sein Debut-Album vor. Die ersten Veröffentlichungen des Duos reichen bis ins Jahr 2012 zurück und es gab in der Folge Auftritte am Frequency Festival, Popfest, Springfestival Graz, Lighthouse Festival, Urban Artforms uvm. Doch wie im Clubmusik-Sektor üblich entsteht in diesem Track-orientiertem Genre ein Album erst nach einer längeren Zeit des Wirkens. Austrian Apparel haben ihre ganz eigene Soundmischung reifen lassen. Um das optimale Kondensat aus "Licht" und "Dunkel" zu finden wurde "AAplus" zur einen Hälfte direkt in der (leeren) Grellen Forelle aufgenommen und zur anderen Hälfte in endlosen Studio-Sessions. So funktioniert "AAplus" sowohl am Dancefloor als auch außerhalb des Clubs.

Inspired by French sociologist Jean Baudrillard’s influential text “Simulacres et Simulation,” Aho Ssan’s debut Album “Simulacrum” plays with synthesis and simulation, picking apart notions of modulatable, subjective veneers of reality.

Aho Ssan is the artist name of Paris based producer & composer Niamké Désiré.
After studying graphic design and cinema, he began to compose electronic music and create his own digital instruments.
Informed by his experiences growing up while black in the French suburbs, Niamké, turns a critical gaze towards facades of inclusivity and equality, and how they diverge from lived experiences of discrimination and racism in France.

For Sonic Territories extended he teamed up with Nima Aghiani (9T Antiope): “This performance is an improvisation by Nima (Strings) & me around my album "Simulacrum". The first piece is a brand new work we did for the occasion. It's always a huge privilege to work with him. 9T Antiope is definitely one of my favorite bands.” - Aho Ssan

We talked to Kate Carr about her path to becoming a sound artist, what she has been focusing on during the pandemic and her passion for literary and analogue means of communication

Her work centres on articulating our relationships with each other and the spaces we move through using sound. Kate Carr is particularly interested in the way sound contours our experiences of the world, how we deploy it to connect, occupy, immerse and remove ourselves from locations, events and each other.
She is a field recordist and this practice of recording the sounds in public spaces informs all of her work. Everything from vibrations caused by cars and footfalls, to indistinct murmurs, music in public space, and the roar of distant sporting events has found its way into her compositions. In its variety, layers and obscurations, the ways in which we together create our soundscape continues to inspire her.

Dive into the unique soundscape of Asifeh (aka Stormtrap), a Palestinian Vienna-based producer/beatmaker/rapper. His musical output consists of rap vocals, sampled material, and original compositions using both modern and abandoned technologies. He is one of the co-founders of the former Ramallah Underground collective, which laid the foundations for a booming underground music scene in Palestine. He has performed in capitals around the world and collaborated with local and international artists such as Akhenaton, Grup Ses Beats, Ethnique Punch or Shams Asma. 

Check out Asifeh's third solo album „Makhazen Bukra" (Well Gedacht, 2020) and the two experimental synth-based projects „Hideout" and „2003" on his Bandcamp.

Within collaborative practices, formulated through performance, podcast, and installation, she uses the medium of sound and speculative fiction to amplify the encounters between human and non-human voices, and examines new economies of collective composition, environmental listening, and communal healing. 

Ybalferran is a moniker of sound artist Błażej Kotowski. The project’s aesthetics ebb and flow between the territories of drone, neoclassic, and noise. Blending a texturally rich collection of synths with the soothing subtlety of field recordings, Ybalferran delivers experimental soundscapes of intimacy, designed to caress.

Thea Soti´s solo performances investigate the boundaries of gender, language, memory, social affiliation and intimacy by exploring virtual and posthuman identities through voice. She uses digitally manipulated sound, human voice and poetry in different formats, continuously twisting, manipulating, recycling her own voice, turning it into noise or melody, shifting between recognizably human and distorted vocal material. Her main goal is to re-contextualize the human voice and challenge the preconceptions attached to it by stretching the borders of what a human voice can sound like.

Martyyna is a producer & DJ born and based in Prague, co-founder of the multimedia KSK club nights, the Illegal Taipei architecture research hub, and a resident DJ of Fuchs2. Her debut album, ‘Written In The Scars,’ cleverly subverts the cliché that our destiny is dictated by the stars. Instead, it explores the idea that our life stories are shaped by the emotional scars we carry and how we come to terms with them. Past feelings of anger and misery melt into a complex and stuttering production, her deepened vocals intertwine with jittering synth arrangements, slowly rising in pitch and gaining courage. Distant, muffled echoes are trying to break free, regressed traumas are coming to the surface, demanding attention. Crafted with both chaos and care, Martyyna’s tracks are made of diverse building blocks reflecting her mood shifts and despairs as well as her meticulous craftswomanship gained working as an architect. Only here, forming physical structures in her waking life is interchanged with sonic worldbuilding of her dreams.

Igor Lorok, Siberian-born and Prague-based visual artist and graphic designer, collaborates closely with Martyyna as part of the KSK multimedia club night and oversees the entire visual aspect of Martyyna’s debut album. He was also responsible for the visual component of Martyyna's live performance at Sonic Territories Festival 2023.

Andras_2020 is a Brazilian multi-disciplinary and non-binary artist, working in the fields of music production, singing and contemporary dance with a sound cosmos that is heavily influenced by Latin/Experimental-Pop, unfiltered lyrics and complex knocking drums. 

Their audiovisual performance “Blowhole” by Andras_2020 and German 3D animator Lucas Becker is about transformation, energy and unapologetic queerness. Together they are breaking the boundaries between performer and audience on an act of rawness and vulnerability. Andras employs body and voice in an ecstatic set, while Lukas' sculptural landscapes enrich the work with shifting shapes and otherworldly creatures. “Blowhole” is an ode to communal healing and bonding as means of survival.

Lithuanian artist Agnė Matulevičiūtė is a sound artist and composer, with a particular focus on conceptual and performative music, theatre, and cinema. Since 2014, she has been actively participating in group exhibitions, art and contemporary music festivals, as well as artist residencies in Lithuania and abroad. Her music written for cinema has been recognized with a national award, and she has also composed music for more than 30 productions in the biggest theatres of her home country. Under her pseudonym Agnès M., she has released 5 albums which explore the genres of synthwave and experimental electronic music. In her compositions, she often uses the sounds of modular and analogue synthesizers from her 1980s collection.

MONOCOLOR alias Marian Essl is a Vienna based audiovisual artist. He explores the interrelations between sound and image in both performance-based and installation-based works. His fully generative, algorithmically created imagery oscillates between fluid, organic textures and rigid structures. He focuses on the relation between sound, image, light and space, aiming to create highly immersive audiovisual universes. His work has been shown in various contexts around the world. In 2020, he was awarded the Japan Media Arts Festival New Face Award for his audiovisual fulldome performance Latent Space that was created during a residency at the Société des arts technologiques (SAT) in Montréal. In 2024, he opened his large-scale solo exhibition SCREEN—SPACE in Krems, Austria.

This is the FOH Recording of a special concert which acted as a final presentation for a workshop ("Decolonize Electronic Music - The Search for Repressed Possibilities") held by Seba Kayan to challenge colonial legacies in digital music production and explore non-western tuning systems like “Leimma” or “Apotome” and their application.

SEBA KAYAN
Seba Kayan is a visionary Viennese dj & artist, who is transforming the music landscape with an unparalleled fusion. Growing up between two cultural worlds and musical influences, Seba decided to combine both her European and Kurdish roots in her unique sound cosmos. Her signature blend includes oriental-futuristic Electro, Techno, and Acid, expertly weaving the unmistakable sound of the so-called “Oriental” music into Ironclad Techno frameworks.

Seba Kayan´s music embodies a harmonious fusion of western and eastern influences, rather than creating divisions she skillfully intertwined both worlds. By seeking the past in archives, an imagination of tomorrow is getting shaped into new hybrid music. Acquiring ascriptions and deconstructing them in the creative musical process, as a collective improvisation effort is an ongoing procedure for her. This method of relating to the ancestors, to a collective memory tells also an alinear historical narrative.

TIN MAN
Tin Man is an artist in the truest sense of the word. Over the last decade now the man born Johannes Auvinen has explored an ever evolving sound palette that touches on house, techno and ambient.  Much like his namesake’s character in the Wizard of Oz, he has been on a mission to find his true self, except this Tin Man’s medium has been music.

Andreas Lutz's work explores the human-machine relation with the approach, to create integrated and universal communication systems. Within these boundaries, he analyzes and reveals phenomenons of perception versus reality. For his recent A/V performance “Abstract Language Model”, an artificial neural network was trained with the entire character sets represented in the Unicode Standard. The resulting complex data models contain the translation of all available human sign systems as equally representable, machine-created states. Through extraction and interpolation of these artificially created semiotic systems a transitionless universal language originates, which can be seen as an audio-visual narration with trans-human / trans-machine language.

The Chicago-hailing duo - consisting of rappers Brian Warren and Quentin Branch - has amassed a well-earned cult following among hip-hop connoisseurs worldwide. Although Angry Black Men's recent album is in conversation with noise rap, it feels more immediately accessible than much of the subgenre’s output. Issued by stalwart Philadelphia experimental label Deathbomb Arc, "The Legend of ABM" shares its chaotic DNA with labelmates like clipping. and JPEGMAFIA. Derek Allen produced the record in its entirety, giving the songs a distorted, metallic palette.

Moreover, ABM’s brand of blown-out beats seems less like an aesthetic choice and more like a natural depiction of how it feels to survive in 2024. The cacophony never ceases and the mind always races, but there must be some way to exist within the din. Angry Black Men’s music is the sound of the unfolding apocalypse rendered in stunning 4K.
