Hello. Welcome back to the Depth Perception Sessions.

This week for episode #43 we welcome one of my favourite artists to the show. Master of the sublime..

Joey Fehrenbach

Bio:

Joey comes from a long line of professional musicians including aunts and uncles who played for everything from symphonies to commercial jingles. He’s been writing music since he was thirteen and for the past twenty, he’s produced electronic music, starting with an old Mac Plus and a few old analog keyboards and an 8-bit sampler. For nine years he recorded dance tracks under the name Dream Traveler. One of his songs,” Time,” appeared on Paul Oakenfold’s Transport CD, one of the highest selling dance compilations of all time.

In 2006 he switched direction and started using his real name. “I wanted a more personal connection to the listener and the only name I could put on it was my own. Band names tend to mask the artist’s identity. There’s nothing more intrinsic than putting your real name on an album, and there’s nothing more personal than writing the most emotional music you can to express to others who you really are.” His goal was to eliminate boundaries and write emotionally charged, melodic music. He even self-released his first album on his own record label to avoid any outside influence.

His music has been used on TV shows like Steven Seagal: Lawman, History Detectives, and Earth 2100: ABC Special Report. Two of his songs, “Behold” and “Being Around You,” were included on Nick Warren’s Global Underground – Paris compilation.

His earlier release, Mellowdrama, topped downtempo and chillout radio charts and sold record numbers over the past four years. Before that, as Dream Traveler, he released numerous dance singles and remixes that became dance floor favorites, played by DJs including John Digweed, Sasha and Nick Warren

Depth Perception Sessions #43 - Joey Fehrenbach

One more year, and with some delay, I resubmit my compilation of the best selection of the tracks that I have played in Mixcloud and Soundcloud, the last year 2021, from my perception and personal taste. 

In previous years, I have prepared a compilation of all the styles, mixing in a same session. This year, I have wanted to do a compilation only of an unique styles, because of all the commitments and collaborations that I have had the last year, and where I could to do a compilation for each style that I have played , due to volume of all collaborations that I have had. This year I have focuses, in which all the tracks have or coexist within the deep style, which is one of the styles that I like the most. One more time, I want to thanks to all collaborates, and to all of persons that they have wanted to share with me a musical moment, through B2B, Guest shows or Radio shows, also to all the people who have proposed me good projects for the future, and of course to all the people to have supported me, and that they have dedicated their valuable time listening the most of my session and specially to listen and support my two channels. This is always very motivating and this always help to continue to working for this wonderful music world, where fortunately, I have met great people, Djs, producers, and collaborates. For everyone… A big hug and my best wishes for all. I hope you like this session full of great tracks, great producers and knowing that I have had to leave a lot of great tracks and great producers out, simply because I have tried to build a very dynamic session in sometimes, with a lot of feeling in others, and I always try when I play what I like the most, is that your body vibrates, and motivates you to dance. Fortsetzung deep story nr. 172

Dunkelheit umgibt mich und ist zugleich in mir. Ein unbeschreibliches Nichts, was sich rasant ausbreitet und immer mehr von mir vereinnahmt. Nichts ist zu sehen, nichts ist zu hören, nichts ist zu spüren, bis ich plötzlich irgendwo aufschlage. Mein Körper schmerzt und meine Augen gewöhnen sich langsam an die Umgebung. Ich kann schemenhafte Umrisse erkennen. Schatten umkreisen mich und lachen laut. Sie werden zu Figuren ohne Gesichter und wandeln ihre Form weiter bis sie einfach mit dem schwarzen Hintergrund verschmelzen. Langsam zeichnet sich so etwas wie eine Umgebung ab. Ich scheine mich in einer Art Kiste zu befinden und auf mich herab schauen riesige Wesen, welche ein breites und zugleich unheilvolles Grinsen aufgesetzt haben. Von ihnen her ertönt ein lautes Brummen. Es ist ohrenbetäubend und treibt meinen Gehörgang schmerzvoll an seine Grenzen. Bis ich mich daran gewöhnt habe, vergeht eine gefühlte Ewigkeit. Doch dann bemerke ich, dass das Brummen nicht monoton ist. Es verändert sich stets und wirkt lebendig. Als ich meine volle Konzentration darauf lenke, bilde ich mir ein, einzelne Wörter vernehmen zu können. 
„Meint ihr er hat etwas gemerkt? Wir können es uns nicht leisten Mitwisser zu haben. Gerade jetzt wo wir vor den großen Durchbruch stehen, müssen wir besonders vorsichtig sein. Er sollte aus dem System entfernt werden.“
„Der Junge hat die volle Behandlung bekommen. Es ist völlig ausgeschlossen, dass er eine Verbindung zwischen seinen kleinen Entdeckungen und uns zieht. Bereits in wenigen Tagen werden diese Erinnerungen aus seinem Gedächtnis verdrängt worden sein. Bedenkt das große Potenzial dieses Probanden. Das sollten wir nicht so schnell aufgeben!“
Das letzte Wort hallt in der Umgebung und wird von allen Seiten wieder zurückgeworfen. Der Hall wandelt sich in sichtbare Schwingungen und diese verdecken die Sicht auf die riesigen Wesen. Ihre verzogenen Grimassen vermischen sich miteinander und Formen die Buchstaben C unc R. 

Aufgeben, aufgeben, aufgeben, aufgeben aufgeben…

Die Szenerie wird von Sonnenstrahlen durchbrochen. Gleißendes Licht durchdringt alles und auf einmal ist es komplett hell. Wunderbare Musik betritt die Bühne des Geschehens und beruhigt mein völlig aufgewühltes Gemüt. Ich sehe das Gesicht von Lighter auf mich zu fliegen. 
„Du willst doch nach der ersten Nacht noch nicht aufgeben?“
„Es ist deine Berufung den Menschen die Freude an der Musik näher zu bringen!“

Sync on or off?
"Sync is mostly on. For me the whole discussion about the realness of DJing with or without sync is nonsense. It is not about a particular button you press. If you move a crowd you win, no matter what." 

How would you describe your approach to Social Media as an artist?
"I don’t follow a specific approach on social media for showcasing myself only as an artist. I try to mix all layers and interests of my life on my channels from Instagram to Linkedin. Especially because I work in digital marketing as my main job I play around a lot with new ideas, formats and contents. For me it is crucial to be as authentic as possible while not taking myself too seriously."

Favorite release at the moment & of all times?
"Last year I played Gumm’s edit of Kim Wilde’s “Keep me hangin’ on” in nearly every set. I love the 80s and this track is a crowd pleaser every single time! Favorite release of all times is a tough one. An album that changed my view on music significantly was “Music for the jilted generation” from the Prodigy. Its style, crunch and rawness blew me away!"

Sonne, Strand und Meer Guest Mix #184 by Blank Pattern

Blank Pattern is a Norwegian-Jamaican Oslo based DJ/producer whose experience with electronic music has extended across more than a decade and a half.
 
 His musical journey initiated at 15, when he started experimenting with only one turntable and spent all his savings on more equipment and vinyl. He quickly advanced to DJ-ing, but found out playing music he did not produce himself did not give him the full experience.
 
 He initially produced Trance, Dubstep and Trap, while playing at radioshows and Clubs all around Norway. His sound progressed, gravitating more towards the melodic sound of techno. He has an ability to unite all of elements and genres throughout his current productions.
