Back to listen again now that I have heard some of your other tracks... I was drawn by your commentary I remembered from here and your photo in your improvised piece.... how very strange is this life in that way....and the water rose over her head and she was seen no more... this is true as people pass out of living memory. My Aunt has asked me to send her family photographs for archives she hopes to pass down through the generations. Doing it this weeekend. None of us are Shakespeare. :)

Tired of cold short days? Me too. Let's party!!  I haven't posted anything new in a while so here's a 10 year old tune that will be new to some of my peers, and those who've heard it have already gotten over the shock. This is an exercise in licentious sexual innuendo and lewd, funky sounds. It's what happens when an otherwise innocent childhood is spent listening to Jimmy Castor Bunch, New Birth, Slave, James Brown, Funkadelic, etc, and there are some biblical metaphors thrown in for good measure. It can be downloaded in case I decide to run for Governor and need to quickly hide all scandal.

I'll Be On My Way

This is an original composition in tribute to heroically good classic rock pianist Nicky Hopkins (a.k.a. “Edward” as he was sometimes called in the studio by members of the Rolling Stones).  He would have turned 80 years old today (02/24/2024).

This was not an attempt at impersonation, but rather an effort toward one specific aspect of his versatile playing style, namely, that elusive balance of flow and syncopation.  Simply put, listening to Nicky Hopkins makes my brain dance, and trying to capture that effect is what inspired this piece.  

Note: Many are unfamiliar with the name Nicky Hopkins, but everyone is familiar with his piano playing which has appeared on records of the Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck, the Who, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker, the Kinks, Steve Miller Band, Art Garfunkel, Jerry Garcia, the Beatles (as well as solo work of all four individual Beatles), and many others.  He played on over forty top 40 albums, and dozens of singles.  He was practically a member of the Rolling Stones (and came up with many of the Stones’ most iconic piano parts including for the songs Angie, She’s a Rainbow, Loving Cup, Sympathy for the Devil), but his battle with Crohn’s disease prevented him from being able to commit to regular touring.  As a result, he spent most of his career working as a session musician. He was, however, an official member (from 1969-1971) of Quicksilver Messenger Service where his piano work generally sits up front in the mix and where you can hear his creativity fully unleashed (e.g., check out their songs Shady Grove, Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder, and Fresh Air).  In spite of his limited number of live performances, he was also a talented improviser as showcased in the Rolling Stones studio jam album “Jamming with Edward”, and another great example of this is the high-quality recording of his live performance with the Jerry Garcia Band on “Let it Rock: The Jerry Garcia Collection Volume 2" https://soundcloud.com/jerrygarcia/sets/let-it-rock-the-jerry-garcia.

Road To Happiness W/PJ Project

This photograph is my great-grandmother, born in 1890. she lived in our home my entire childhood up to age 14 in 1968 when she died of a bad heart. I have spent so many hours staring at her baby pictures while imagining her life. She became a stunning woman and gradually became the Nana I knew. We go through so many physical changes in our lives but we feel like we are the same person inside. She lost three babies, each at age six months to SIDS - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.  Such heartache she went through. She loved each of them for six months and woke up one morning to their unexplained death. I never knew until I was grown. Eventually, most people became only a name on the back of a photograph. Since everything now is digital we are losing even that to pass on. I have my great grandmother's original baby pictures. My family today is unaware of these photographs. At one time I tried to create interest in family but I failed.  So it is up to me to remember. She was such a beautiful baby. My love to you Edith May Brown Ferden. I dedicate this music to you.

Lost Photographs

My music pieces are all piano improvisations expressing emotions. It is music telling stories without the words. In my earIy years I sang and played piano in piano bars or fronted bands  I've been composing, teaching and performing most of my life.  I'm getting old(er) now 😔 but the great thing about creating music is it gets better the longer you play, and you have more to write about! 

This is what I leave of me to my generations to come who wonder where their desire to make music comes from. My mother also played. I learned recently that my grandmother and great grandmother were both accomplished pianists when they were young. My great grandmother sang and danced in minstrel shows in the early 1900's. I know have great-grandchildren. They will know who I am through my music. When I am gone my music will still be here. What a wonderful thought!
