The Eclectic Collective -- composition
 
This song started with JJ during one of his late Saturday night composition sessions, where he came up with the idea on his synth. He laid down some great organ and electric piano for the rest of us to play with. Ken was first up with his lively, raucous drums. He and I did our back and forth with the rhythm section until it was solid, though. Then Stephen laid in his dirty, rawkin' rhythm guitar to give it an extra foundation. Finally, Tez put the icing on the cake with his monster soloing throughout. 
  Of course, every great song needs a great producer. In this case, Tez did the honors in a very expert manner. We wanted Stephen (Texmex Shaman) on this, too, of course, but he is just now getting settled into his new abode, and was in flux while we were making this one. He'll be back with The Eclectic Collective next week, though. 
  This is an example of Eclectic Collective teamwork. It came together relatively quickly, which means we were all having fun doing it. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Hello everyone,

Anyone who listens to my music knows that I explore different musical genres. This time is no different.

I was fortunate enough to work with the wonderful and incredible Tam Jennifer. Tam wrote the lyrics for the song and sang both vocal parts (Yes, both!). 
I arranged and produced the song.

I have never worked on such a moving and emotional song before.

Bloody Tayo Majo Day

One month ago my first great-grandchild was born - Evangeline. She lives too far away and I won't be able to spend much time with her. I wanted to give her a gift that will always connect her to me even long after I am gone - something the test of time can not erase. Until the time of digital photos, that took the place of pictures we had to get developed, people in our lives eventually became only the names written on the back. Who they are to us becomes lost except for maybe a story if we are lucky.  

From the moment a child is born they learn who they are through the environment around them.  What they hear, what they taste and what they see are permanently part of their knowledge. We know things simply because we experienced them. As I recorded this improvisation of three tracks - 2 piano and one strings - having no mixer, I close my eyes, feel the sounds and try to blend the sounds in my head as I play. I imagined the music soothing away the reason why Evangeline cries, hoping the sounds will soothe her restlessness and let her drift to sleep.  

Long ago I began calling my music "dream music," best listened to in the dark with your eyes closed. Feel the tones of melody as they linger and blend, fading in and out. When Evangeline grows up, one day she will find the music again and she will remember it. Hopefully it will sooth her life then, too. The legacy we leave behind that matters is not money or "things." It is the affect we had on people's lives. It is the only thing of value that matters. Music connects people. It is why, when we hear "oldies" that we are transformed to that time in our life and we remember.

Time For Sleep Evangeline

Day after day my life revolves around two constants - my music and buying and selling vintage jewelry.  There is so much hate and disrespect in America being shoved down our throats that it is depressing. The only way to survive it is to crawl inside one's own mind and create a space you want to be in and for me - create the music to listen to. I enjoy the music I record, with all the little mistakes I make because I'm not an engineer. At night, if I  have trouble sleeping I  stream my music.  If you don't enjoy listening your own music why would anyone else? I often go to sleep with my music playing so it is indeed the music of my dreams

I'd Rather Be Dreaming Today

Some days have been harder than others to go through. I lose track of what day it is because of the isolation. There is sadness knowing there are millions of people who are grieving the loss of their family and friends this year that should not have happened this way.  There are many more that don't know they are on the list. I've worked hard to make it to this point. There is so much more music to play and give away hoping to leave a piece of me with them. As I play I have another great grandbaby on the way. will my music be the only way they get to know me. I guess that depends.

This piece has other instruments, 4 tracks, which often changes the story. I have also uploaded just the piano where all the music begins. The music is layered one improv over the others. There is no mixing, only what I hear in my head as I play. It can't be changed. It is what it is, what I'm feeling at that moment.  The music is completed usually in 20-30 minutes. It either works or it doesn't.

The Beginning and the End

Staring out my window today, a gloomy day and it's getting dark earlier and earlier. No sun to pick up the spirit to let me pretend that everything is going to be okay. Tomorrow I will wake up and everything will go back to normal as if that normal was okay - because it wasn't. If I didn't have my music to make me feel whole I couldn't stand it. Standing is getting harder before I have to lay down. It's going to be a very long winter.

Will We Heal From This

It has been a stressful year and everything I thought would happen, did. It has been ugly. Many people have lost the ability to seek the truth and thousands of everyday people joined the cult Qanon. The president has shown more racism the closer we got to this day, and those who aren't loyal to him got axed or destroyed. People are dying yet he insists they aren't. What is happening? But we have reached the next step. Tomorrow we vote. It is just the beginning of the next fight for the life of our country. I never thought, I never believed such a day would come. we have a long way to go to undo the damage  he has done, but at least we will soon know, after the ballots are counted if we will be able to begin to put the pieces back together again.

The Waiting is Almost Over Now - Maybe

It has been a long hard year for everyone and emotions have been high. From despair over loss, to fear of not being able to repair our lives and anger because not enough was done to lessen the possibility of paying this price because too many haven't wanted to believe it was happening.  This will be a year that will never be forgotten and the repercussions have only begun to be felt. We will never be the same again no matter how much we pretend we won't have to create a new normal. The year 2019 was the last year of 'Good old Days' which is my next piece of music.

A Year of Sadness

A Heavy Price to Pay

My music pieces are all piano improvisations expressing emotions. It is music telling stories without the words. In my earIy years I sang and played piano in piano bars or fronted bands of different styles, from country to heavy metal and to 40. I've been composing, teaching and performing most of my life.  I'm getting old(er) now 😔 but the great thing about creating music is it gets better the longer you play, and you have more to write about! 

This is what I leave of me to my generations to come who wonder where their desire to make music comes from. My mother, grandmother and great grandmother were both accomplished pianists when they were young. My son is also exceptional.  My great grandmother and gr grandfather sang and danced in minstrel shows (vaudeville) in the early 1900's. Kids today have no idea what life was like before moving pictures.  I now have great-grandchildren. They will know who I am through my music. When I am gone my music will still be here. What a wonderful thought!
