We are very proud to present our take on Orchestral Strings to you.
We have spent the best part of five years working on this project and have left no stone unturned to create a product that, as a multisampled String Orchestra alone, will satisfy even the most demanding users. But this collection is so much more than that. Orchestral Strings is the culmination of all of our efforts and experience to this point. It melds together everything that we've learned about multisampling over the years, combined with our knowledge of orchestral phrases.
At its core, Orchestral Strings is a hugely capable full-divisi full-size Strings section, recorded with the fantastic Capellen Orchestra in Zlin, Czech Republic. It is edited with the utmost care to preserve all the details and character of the performances.
We covered all of the most-used articulations in up to four velocities, and we devised a 'shared tail' system for the shorts that provides you with a greater variety of round robins without unnecessarily increasing the memory load.
Poly-Legato and Auto Divisi ensure the most realistic sound imaginable. No corners were cut in making this product, and it will evolve for many years to come. In fact, we still have some surprises up our sleeves that will enhance your user experience and provide tools that are useful and fun in equal measure.
Included within the instrument are some powerful midi engines with midi import, real-time midi manipulation, a piano roll editor and midi export. The possibilities are near endless once you scratch the surface, yet very easily accessible if you just want to compose quickly.
The Runs engine will trigger and play silky smooth runs whilst you hold chord notes. Just play a start and end key and these runs will adhere to your chosen chords and transition between all the applicable notes automatically.
The Phrases engine at its core works as a sketchpad for Patterns, with the core 12 patterns auto-saved with your instrument or DAW session. Going further, a potential 12 x 12 x 12 phrases can be saved away to be shared between your instruments and projects.
These phrases are then playable in a fashion very similar to the way our Phrase-Based instruments work. You can even drag in phrases from the Phrase-Based products you already own, edit them and tweak them to your liking, vastly boosting the flexibility of this Strings instrument. You can even drag out the midi for entire played passages including any chord changes, added Harmony etc. for use in third-party instruments or for instance to add a synth layer for a hybrid sound!

Sordino strings add three essential articulations to the Sonokinetic Orchestral Strings collection, captured with a Sordino, or Mute, on the strings. This has a very specific sound that is bound to enchant and delight!
The Sordino strings have been recorded as part of the Orchestral Strings family, in the same hall and also with full divisi and the same attention to detail. They perfectly complement the Sonokinetic Orchestral Strings and fill that need for a little warmer and smoother sound.
All functionalities in Sonokinetic Orchestral Strings have been ported to Sordino Strings, except MIDI export.
If you're familiar with the playing engine of the former, you will feel right at home. We've always loved the sound of jazz-influenced film scores. The orchestral approach to jazz harmony has a romantic flair that is irresistible and has easily stood the test of time. We just can't get enough of sweeping string passages, the sound of a trumpet's harmon mute, a big band sax section, flugelhorn and trombones with french horns. For many years we've felt the urge to create a product encompassing this style of music and now we have:
Noir is our first foray into what hopefully will turn out to be a new line in the Sonokinetic range. As always we have added some twists to our existing engine, but in this case it was more of a rewrite. For those familiar with our other orchestral libraries, Noir is different! Because of the nature of the musical content we decided to deviate from our usual four high-mid-low presets and go more in the vein of the atonal Espressivo, with 12 preset keys that each hold a single performance. This makes it even easier to combine different presets and experiment with intertwining melodies and harmonies, which achieves a more horizontal composing process. A lot of thought when into how to translate this concept into a useable interface and we hope you like what we've come up with and encourage this new direction.
In Noir we put all three recorded orchestral sections in a single Section instrument, which makes combining different instrument groups super easy, and of course we have our trusted randomize button that will serve up twelve fresh phrases with every press.
There are two instruments in Noir, the solos come separately. Solos are a collection of improvisations on Tenor Saxophone, Trumpet (with harmon mute), Flugelhorn, Clarinet and Piano that are recorded in the same hall as the main instrument. The performances blend perfectly with the phrase material in the Sections instrument, or can stand perfectly well on their own with a gorgeous sound and intuitive no-fuss interfacing.
Producing Noir was a massive effort, and we consider it a new milestone. We hope you feel the same way!

Capriccio is our biggest Orchestral collection yet, both in terms of physical size and in terms of sound, which is just...BIG!
We had conductor Petr Pololanik approach the limits of his Capellen orchestra for these recording sessions, and the resulting energy, drive and power really comes across in each and every sample. Each phrase has been carefully treated from conception through production to implementation in the final instrument, to make sure it would work as a whole, and be as widely usable as possible.
We say it is big, and the sound is big, but as you can hear from the demos the sound has a diverse range of uses and is only limited by your own imagination. You can use Capriccio as a base for your composition, or to complement your existing piece, using only bits and pieces. It can be really loud and awe-inspiring, or gently set the mood.
If you are familiar with our previous orchestral instrument 'Grosso', Capriccio's user interface should look quite familiar. The basic structure of the instrument is the same, using 4 presets each divided in 3 layers, but there are many innovations within Capriccio that will make working with this library even more intuitive and flexible. Highlights include the 'phrase offset' slider, separate volume setting for release tails and MIDI drag/drop from the score view in the interface, straight into your DAW.
With Capriccio we’ve brought phrase-based sampling bang up to date. Throw away your preconceptions of stiff one-shot samples and use the power of the Capriccio interface to harmonise, syncopate, offset and blend every one of the 38,000 samples. We’ve wrung every bit of creativity and flexibility out of these phrases and built a bespoke interface that will allow you to do the same.
Despite advancements in sampling technology, you simply can't beat the realism of live played phrases and orchestral patterns so our goal is to make these as playable as possible, like a real instrument, with the minimum of end-user programming. These instruments are meant to stimulate your creativity, and based on the feedback we are getting, that is exactly what they do.
Please watch our range of videos if you want to know more about Capriccio’s inner workings. There are many 'hidden' features that will enhance your user experience a great deal if you know how to use them. For example, with Grosso we added 'bar sync' but for Capriccio we also added 'phrase offset’. These things are very complicated in terms of under-the-hood programming but we’re sure that the intuitive interface makes it easy to realize the potential of features like this.
All phrases for Capriccio are composed in 4/4, with straight 8th and 16th notes.

Exquisite Intimacy; Many people assume that Sonokinetic’s signature sound is grand and statuesque, as we fill our recording space with many talented players and layer phrases together in our bespoke Kontakt engines. However, sometimes it’s great to dial things down for a more personal feel, and that’s just what we’ve done with Indie. The style of these intimate ensemble phrases take their lead from modern TV drama, boutique film and independent video games with a naked and personal sound.
Recording smaller versions of our string, woodwind and brass ensembles just wasn’t enough this time around, so we’ve also supplemented them with a huge selection of melodic percussion phrases. For the first time ever, string quartet phrases have been included, perfect for layering with the other ensembles to bring the focus back to your compositions. The overall emphasis here is on the lightest of touches, from delicate violin duos and solo clarinet to harp glissandi and gently played mallets. 
In fact, the melodic percussion deserves a special mention as we made sure to catch all the subtly and wonder of these instruments, including the seldom-sampled concert cimbalom, a dulcimer-like instrument with a unique sound. The dreamy melodic textures we composed for Indie were delicately played by our performers in the same space as the other ensembles. Marimba, xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone, crotales, upright piano, celesta and concert harp bring an intense personal feel to the whole collection.
We felt that the Indie recordings were well suited to the playback engine which we originally debuted with ‘Noir’, our jazz-drenched section library. That means that the 12 preset keys each hold a single performance. Mapping phrases like this makes it easy to combine melodies and harmonies and hear real-time performances intertwine with one another. 
The randomize feature also makes a welcome return, which conjures twelve complimentary phrases with every press. There’s also the option to randomize per orchestral section, either string quartet, string ensemble, woodwinds, brass quintet or melodic percussion

Minimal would suggest a particular music style, and many of the patterns available in this instrument are very well suited for that style. However, we’d like to stress that this is indeed a very flexible instrument, capable of enhancing a broad range of musical arrangements and compositions in a wide variety of styles. Where Minimal differs from libraries like Tutti and Vivace is in its section-based approach. All phrases are recorded per orchestral section and can be used separately or together and in any combination, allowing for a great deal of variations at your fingertips.

Apart from this being a respectful nod to our Dutch art heritage on the outside, it also very much references the “form follows function” approach that Dutch design is famous for. There are no superfluous elements and we’ve arranged everything in an intuitive way. You have every control in one screen within an uncrowded workspace. You might not suspect it from just looking at it, but there are a lot of complex functionalities at your disposal from this one screen. One of the functions that might need a bit more introduction is the harmonic shift function. More visibly, and in lieu of popular request, we have found a way to greatly improve the score view. Way back when, when Sonokinetic was in its infant stage, we recorded two carillons and turned them into a simple kontakt instrument. Ever since, we have felt the urge to revisit that, and do it with the knowledge and experience we have gained over the past years. That time has come, and this time it is not just a carillon, but a large collection of different sized bells, from various periods and places of origin.
Each hit on these bells will spark a very unique and authentic sound that can only be generated by pure weight and age. Sonokinetic sampled historical valuable bronze cast bells as old as a 1000 years, proceeded through the ages of innovation in bell casting and tuning and ended in our time of hi-tech computer calibrated pitch perfect bells, and sampled all of those with great attention to detail, preserving their original tails of up to 30 seconds.
The swiss pocketknife of the collection is the Carillon, sounding just amazing!  This is the best pitched and sound callibrated Carillon you will find. Originally cast by the foundries that made the new bell in the Notre Dame in Paris, the Olympic Games 2012 bell and several renowned carillons all over Europe. Where Sonokinetic Mallets is there for your subtle orchestral needs, this product will literally blow you away, and make everything sound epic and Majestic, and add a weight to your compositions, pun intended, in a way that not many instruments are able to.
It’s just amazing when you think of it, that you can now have things like this in your composing arsenal, complete church organs, orchestras and clocks weighing thousands of kilos, on a laptop or desktop computer, literally at your fingertips.
All samples for this product are recorded and sampled in 24bit 96Khz, and all processing is done in that resolution, after which we converted them to 24 bit 48Khz, making a convenient package of just over 3 GB.
Over a timespan of more than a 1000 years of production, assembly, usage and preservation this very unique collection of bells are sampled here for the fist time and offered to you in an original Sonokinetic library.
Sonokinetic climbed a cathedral, risking permanent hearing loss, to capture the original sound of 6000kg heavy cast bells that sound from the Dutch Saint Johns Cathedral and traveled back in time to ancient Dutch Glory of the Golden age in the 16th and 17th century where the production of tower bells was perfected. Toll covers bells from European countries like Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands, and an in depth study and recording of South-East-Asian ceremonial bells covering ground from Vietnam to China.

The Runs engine allows you to play chords and trigger runs that adhere to these chords just by playing a start and an end key.

The Phrases engine at its core works as a sketchpad for Patterns, with 12 patterns autosaved with your instrument or DAW session and a potential 12 x 12 x 12 phrases saved away to be shared between your instruments and projects.

The most intuitive runs instrument out there

Realistic runs are hard to produce with a conventional multisampled instrument, and fast runs are hard to play if you're not an accomplished pianist.

We produced this instrument to make fast runs extremely easy to play. They adapt to your composition's tempo and key, making completely realistic runs attainable for everybody.

Whether it be just a single run up to a transition, or an intense flurry of up and down runs that are the centerpiece of a composition, these runs will deliver. Play them with just a chord in the left hand and a beginning and end note in the right hand. They are great fun to play around with, and the intuitive 'emphasis' slider dials in a mix between the recorded strings and woodwinds sections in one fluid motion.

Note the 'Modal' part of the name - these runs don't just play from major scales root notes - they can start and end on any note of the scale, making all modalities within the diatonic scale available. Additionally, when in Relative Keyboard mode, any note you press on the right hand side will be conformed to the nearest scale tone, making it really easy to play runs that adapt to changing chords in real time!

With this new inventive and holistic approach to editing and scripting, we kept the sample count and RAM footprint extremely low for this instrument without compromising on the realism of the end result.

Returning to the superb recording space we employed for other Sonokinetic orchestral libraries, we gathered a selection of some of the greatest (and most precise) players to perform for us. With a full woodwind and string section at our disposal, we captured the full range of the instruments. Modal Runs is designed from the ground up, borrowing design aspects from our other instruments such as Ostinato. This script is an exciting new development that we are very proud of and stretches the limits of what you can achieve with traditional sampling.

Ever since we recorded and produced ‘Carousel’ several years ago, we’ve been hearing so many positive reactions about it, and about the need for ‘couleur locale’ like this. Loving Carousel as much as we do, we decided to do an encore, a sequel if you wish. We infused this new instrument with a lot of the things we’ve learned and perfected over the years, and our scripting mastermind Ken Black added an ingenious script to glue it all together and make it feel and play as it should in proper Sonokinetic fashion.

For recording we went back to Hilversum, the Netherlands, and booked the same studio we used for Celesta. We teamed up with A.W. de Vogel, who comes from a long lineage of prolific organ-men in the lowlands. 
He brought along two of his most cherished barrel organs, a small hand operated one, and a larger one powered by an electric motor, that we barely got through the studio entrance. 

The organs made some waves in the ‘Muziekgebouw van de Omroep’. These instruments have a tremendous ability to move people, maybe it’s a Dutch thing, I don’t know, but it was very interesting to me how such a ‘mechanical’ instrument turned out to invoke so many emotions in so many different people. There is a certain kind of magic that radiates from the wooden dolls, the creaky mechanics, the lacquered cardboard pianorolls and the skilfully painted front. These instruments are meant to bring joy, and that they did!

In order to help convert this joy to a kontakt instrument we tried to adapt some of the functionality of the original instrument to the digital equivalent. 
We thought of the mechanical runs that permeate proper barrel organ music, and found a way to do that with the pitch wheel, and trills with the mod wheel, which all felt very natural to us. The ‘melody double’ function makes it very easy to play your melodies in octaves, and for the large organ we recorded the original tremolo effect.

All in all we feel we delivered a very inspirational instrument with ‘The Carnival’ that not only sounds the part, but also makes it very easy to play ‘authentic’ material, and all while being great fun in the process…

Grosso is the best instrument we have produced to date. Period.

With Grosso, Sonokinetic BV is changing the paradigm for orchestral phrase-based instruments… again! Before our Minimal library, the level of control, whilst retaining the authentic sound that live recordings bring to the party, was unheard of. We have gotten so much positive feedback on Minimal that a ‘sequel’ was unavoidable. Mere sequels is not what we do though at Sonokinetic, so if you look at what Grosso brings to the table, you will see an evolved entity that is a homo-sapiens to Minimal’s homo-erectus. 
We have conceived this instrument from the ground up, using parts of the Minimal engine and reimagining many other things to accommodate for the added flexibility Grosso brings to the table. The main difference, apart from the obviously upbeat nature of the recorded material and the addition of a choir part and a taiko and non-melodic percussion section, is that we split out the orchestral sections into more parts. Strings and choir are split in low - mid - high, woodwinds and brass into low and high, percussion into taiko and more traditional orchestral percussion. All of these elements have been carefully composed to work well with all of the others, resulting in millions of possible combinations of sounds.
The nature and sheer amount of this raw material, and the added flexibility we needed to offer to you in an intuitive way, led us to a completely new interface style, and it made us split up the instrument into different Kontakt .nki’s. Don’t worry though, we have laid out the keyswitches in a way that still makes it possible to play this instrument ‘Minimal-style’ with the whole orchestra on one midi channel.
Grosso is a 12/8 feel library, and we have configured the engine to work in both 4/4 and 12/8 time signatures within your DAW. Though the instrument was conceived with trailer and action styles in mind, the finished product is capable of so much more, limited only by your imagination.
Check out our demo section to hear some of the compositions made by the incredibly talented composers in our beta team, inspired by Grosso. In fact, much of the early feedback we got from these guys included the word ‘inspirational’ as much as the word ‘exceptional’. If there’s ever an instrument that can help you get out of a funk when you need it most, it’s this one. To top off the collection we have added a ‘transition builder’ instrument that is aimed at gluing parts together, and building up towards climaxes. It includes brass and woodwind crescendo chords, and recognises different chord types, like diminished, augmented and dominant 7th. Chords are constructed on the spot from a collection of recorded intervals. This builder instrument also contains percussion and taiko fills, and a fully playable multisampled taiko ensemble patch, both as an ensemble and individual drums. The automated violin sound, with its constant drone and pivoting melody string lines, is an essential tool for the composer that needs access to a large pallet of instruments and music styles. Hurdy Gurdy is the Cinnamon of the musical instruments family. It doesn’t fit as a generic ingredient but apply it well and in the correct ‘dish’ it’ll create something you’ll never forget. 

We’ve been working on a concept for this instrument for a while and we’ve been told over and over again that it couldn’t be converted to the keyboard in a sensible way, because of the unique way the Hurdy Gurdy creates drones, rhythms and legato melody all at once. But we persisted and feel like we prevailed.

Capriccio is our biggest Orchestral collection yet, both in terms of physical size and in terms of sound, which is just...BIG!
We had conductor Petr Pololanik approach the limits of his Capellen orchestra for these recording sessions, and the resulting energy, drive and power really comes across in each and every sample. Each phrase has been carefully treated from conception through production to implementation in the final instrument, to make sure it would work as a whole, and be as widely usable as possible.
We say it is big, and the sound is big, but as you can hear from the demos the sound has a diverse range of uses and is only limited by your own imagination. You can use Capriccio as a base for your composition, or to complement your existing piece, using only bits and pieces. It can be really loud and awe-inspiring, or gently set the mood.
If you are familiar with our previous orchestral instrument 'Grosso', Capriccio's user interface should look quite familiar. The basic structure of the instrument is the same, using 4 presets each divided in 3 layers, but there are many innovations within Capriccio that will make working with this library even more intuitive and flexible. Highlights include the 'phrase offset' slider, separate volume setting for release tails and MIDI drag/drop from the score view in the interface, straight into your DAW.
With Capriccio we’ve brought phrase-based sampling bang up to date. Throw away your preconceptions of stiff one-shot samples and use the power of the Capriccio interface to harmonise, syncopate, offset and blend every one of the 38,000 samples. We’ve wrung every bit of creativity and flexibility out of these phrases and built a bespoke interface that will allow you to do the same.
Despite advancements in sampling technology, you simply can't beat the realism of live played phrases and orchestral patterns so our goal is to make these as playable as possible, like a real instrument, with the minimum of end-user programming. These instruments are meant to stimulate your creativity, and based on the feedback we are getting, that is exactly what they do.

There are many 'hidden' features that will enhance your user experience a great deal if you know how to use them. We have covered a lot of ground in our orchestral series already; there’s the scary Tutti, the uplifting Vivace, the understated Minimal, the driving Grosso and the majestic Capriccio. We’ve always had a yearning to capture something more delicate, and now we’ve done it… presenting “Sotto”.
As a composer there are certain musical rules that you have to obey, and one of them is that there always has to be contrast. A loud passage will not sound really loud unless it’s contrasted by a softer counterpart, and a climax cannot arrive without a journey to get you there. 
We have always been fascinated by the sound of a majestic orchestra hitting the brake pedal and laying down soft beds and patterns, and that is what we’ve achieved with this library.
Anyone who has ever attempted to capture a live orchestra will be able to tell you that very quiet playing is a tricky thing to record. The softer you try to go, the closer you get to the breakpoint between sound and no sound. The starts of phrases in brass and woodwinds become increasingly hard to align for the players, resulting in beautiful imperfection. The balance of sound to mechanical noise tips slightly in favour of the mechanical noise, but to us it all sounds very much alive.
There are a lot of beautiful beds with different playing techniques, like sul tasto, sul ponticello and harmonics for strings, frullato for woods and different mutes for brass. For Sotto we further expanded our voice leading concept to get even smoother transitions between chords. The combinations of different phrases and sections sound absolutely stunning, with a very warm and rich timbre. We’re so excited to add this product to our range as it stands proud alone and also complements other Sonokinetic orchestral products. 
To add intimacy we have included a breath slider for woodwinds and brass that will add ‘air’ to the phrases, further blurring the line between sound and no sound, and musical sound versus human sound. We really wanted this to be a living breathing instrument that can add life to your compositions and feel we have succeeded in doing just that. We hope you agree.

Maximo fills a space in our phrase-based orchestral line-up that many composers working in media have been waiting for. Like the old adage, we didn't go home, we went BIG! Our enlarged and expanded orchestra worked overtime to play the biggest, baddest orchestral phrases possible. Not only is the sound huge, but the writing has been tailored to this specific set of instruments. Some phrases were composed specifically using unusual harmonic content like the odd flat 6th and flat 2nd intervals. We created a product that will fit in perfectly with any contemporary writing style. 
Of course all of the stuff you would expect in a Sonokinetic phrase-based instrument is there, so if you've used any of our instruments before you will be able to put Maximo to work right away without any trouble. Within minutes you'll be adding this big amazing sound to your palette. 
Using our midi drag and drop functionality doubling the orchestral phrases with a synth for that hybrid sound has never been easier. The full score is also available within the interface so you can peek under the hood and see what's going on compositionally with the phrases you are using and how the sound coming out of your speakers has been achieved.
Expanding the brass section and having them play their lungs out was a very visceral experience and we think it translates really well to the finished product. The sound has a 'kinetic' strength and brings about a joyous feeling that is hard to ignore. We've been smiling all the way through production with this one!
For the strings and woodwinds the emphasis is on the lower side of things too, with 8 double basses, 16 celli, 6 bassoons and a contrabassoon. We've made sure that the low content has enough pressure and presence to carry a mix all the way through, whatever you decide to add on top.

Ostinato Strings: The phrase library for complex chords
Ever since we started developing phrase libraries (and we've done quite a few now), we've been wanting to expand the harmonic material these libraries could output. We've never really been able to go beyond standard major and minor chords with our recorded phrases. There are many reasons for this; because our phrases are recorded live as a whole rather than constructed from smaller pieces, because there are hardware limitations to user's computers and because there are limits to the recording time we can allocate to a specific product while still keeping it affordable. Some of our products do contain different material, and with the harmonic shift function there are ways to approach things like 7th chords and sus chords, but until now we didn't have a way to play all the chords we wanted and also offer different inversions of these chords.
At the heart of the Ostinato series there is an entirely new process that we've been developing for quite some time now. From the recording stage, the entire approach is different from our regular phrase instruments in that we recorded separate intervals for various rhythm building blocks. After careful editing we combine these intervals through an intelligent script that builds them into chords in 5 different voicings and up to 4 inversions (the fourth only for 7th chords).
Not only does the engine build the chords based on the inversion you play in the chord area, but when you play in the harmonic shift area it will judge which inversion it plays based on the chord that came before it, the chord quality on the key you're in and the position of the chord you're triggering in that key. This ensures that transitions are smooth and harmonically correct. 
Ostinato recognises and plays 12 different chord types, it is our first instrument that can handle diminished, half-diminished, augmented chords and many more. For a full list check the user manual.
This is the first product in this new line of instruments that will coexist alongside both our Orchestral Series and our Phrase-Based libraries, bridging the gap by doing on specific thing exceptionally well... ostinato chords.

We’ve got time...
The sounds of ticking clocks and watches have always been associated with suspense, drama and edge-of-the-seat movie moments. In typical Sonokinetic fashion we couldn’t let this cinematic trend pass us by without jumping in with both feet and sampling an exhaustive collection of pocket watches, wristwatches and small clocks. The extremely quiet sounds that these mechanisms produce had us using all the tricks in our recording book to capture clean and precise samples without extraneous noise. After much experimentation we think that we’ve managed to capture intimately nuanced watch sounds without sacrificing any of the character of these unique timepieces.
Of course, we couldn’t resist presenting these samples in a fun and functional interface. It has a special steampunk twist with multiple cogs and gears that can be clicked to access deeper parameters of the performance. Within the GUI it’s easy to combine sounds, add effects and trigger exactly the rhythmic patterns that you want to play.

Majestic Orchestral Sampling

Ever since we started our phrase-based sampling odyssey there’s been something we’ve longed to capture: The slow and stately sound of strings melodies, woodwind chord ensembles and smooth brass lines have been on our wish-list for years. Now, we present “Largo”, where we have finally created a set of performances that typify the kind of scoring of classic film scores and historical features. The emphasis here is on strong thematic writing with smooth, yet dramatic transitions between the notes.

In musical terminology, “Largo” literally means slow and we took this at face value, asking our orchestra to perform at a stately 75 BPM. That doesn’t mean that you can only use these phrases for sombre pieces as the engine adapts the phrase playback to any speed of project. With Largo we always kept versatility in mind. This means legato, portamento, staccato and staccatissimo styles have been captured, as well as harmonics, glissandi and many other techniques which are impossible to reproduce realistically with traditional multi-sampled orchestral libraries. Largo covers many bases with pristinely captured performances available in all root keys.
More than ever, the “Harmonic Shift” functionality of the interface comes into its own. As Largo contains so much strong thematic material, it’s really inspiring to utilize the Harmonic Shift capabilities to create unexpected melodies and harmonies.
Of course all of the stuff you would expect in a Sonokinetic phrase-based instrument is there, so if you've used any of our instruments before you will be able to put Largo to work right away without any trouble. Within minutes you'll be adding themes and melodies to your palette.

BOWLS
Known as the meditative musical sound of tranquility, the bowls we recorded for this instrument have a magical quality and emit pure frequencies. These quartz crystal glass bowls give off such a lush and dreamy tone that we had a hard time tearing ourselves away from the recording. We sampled 4 bowls of varying sizes from 20cm to 25cm diameter, struck with a glass mallet with a rubber finish. We also rubbed the mallet around the edge of the bowls to make them “sing” a light and airy musical note. The samples here have such a gorgeous and complex tone that the AMS microphone system we used for recording gives a completely different character for each of the different mic positions. Give them a try and see what you think of these spiritual sounds. 

CARILLON
Recording these Carillon bells was a challenge, but one which we relished. These are real clock tower bells weighing up to half a ton on the biggest set, so it's a very powerful sound which we captured in great detail. Once we had managed to get these large bells into the studio (with the help of some heavy lifting equipment) we set about recording them with two different mallet types. We also captured a rubbed articulation, with a sustained rub around the outside of the bell, either the sound bow or the waist, depending on the size of the bell. Although the strong and stoic timbres here are perfect for dramatic hits, we also recorded plenty of softer strikes which can sound extremely melodic when you play at lower velocities. With the onboard options for sound shaping and reversed articulations, our Carillon ended up being far more versatile than we had ever imagined. 

CHIME
Finding the right bells for Chime sent us on a magical mystery tour to source authentic antiques. We didn’t want to record factory machined bells but rather remastered hand-cast copies of original clock bells from 17th and 18th century clocks. This collection features designs from the chime bells of Dutch Amsterdam Standing clocks, French Pendules, Comtoises, Dutch Grand Father clocks, Bracket clocks, Carriage clocks and large watch bells. We just love the sound of these bell chimes and each one of them is unique. They are made from a alloy of silver and bronze and hand-tuned to retain the vintage character. The clarity of these bells surpasses those that are usually used for orchestral bell trees and we’re proud to have remade and recorded them.

SLEIGH BELLS 2
There’s no instrument that evokes the magic of the holiday season like sleigh bells. Ever since Santa kitted out Rudolph and his reindeer chums with these tinkling tiny chimes, the season has never been the same. This instrument brings us right back to our childhood, waiting patiently in bed to hear the sounds of sleigh bells overhead - or maybe that’s just our imagination? We’ve sampled sleigh bells once before, but this new collection is hugely expanded, updated and completely re-recorded with new groupings of bells in all sorts of different sizes. You can play everything from 6 bells, up to 100 on a single bell tree, which is a giant sound. Within the instrument there are multiple options for playing long and short shakes, clusters and even sequencing sleigh bell patterns.

The instrument can provide you with a very nice 'couleur locale' whenever you need to give a song that French twist. The accordion brings a breath of fresh air and evokes feelings of romance, passion and nostalgia.

As with other Sonokinetic instruments, we focused on getting a 'real' sound instead of a 'perfect' sound, as you can hear from the demo tracks skilfully created by our demo composers. We are very proud of the finished product and believe that it will empower lots of people to make MIDI recorded accordion tracks that sound like they were played under a bridge along the river Seine.
