It’s the dry run

The hoarse horse
keeps running, tripping, falling
and the angry jockey forces him
to get up, run and trip and fall
and get up again

Muscular contractions manifest
bones mould into unnatural shapes
hooves hurt, the horse won't run
they say, he’s just stubborn

fantastic figurines showed pretty faces made of porcelain until they fell from the shelf
their hollow heads revealing emptiness beneath the breakable material
and their fluffy bodies now lie amidst a thousand pieces
on the floor

Who’s got the glue
and patience
to fix this puzzle
and put all the pieces back together

Unnatural Shapes

He was asleep in his armchair
when the family arrived
the paper in his lap
the telly on mute
the match in Wimbledon
could’ve been interesting
but his eyelids were heavy still

A slow walk into the obscure
a fog closing in,
a man wondering
a life blown away like dust
a closet that’s empty
his bones feel so heavy

The mixed double hurried across the court
as his grandchildren entered through
the living room door
the table was set
dinner was cooked
grandmother gave him a worried look

The youngest grandson
started pinching his ear
he slowly awoke,
didn’t know where he were
he couldn’t recall any memory

A Miner’s Canary

A warm yellow light
shines into the hall
my eyes try to adjust
to the darkness that surrounds me
it smells of wooden stairs
and the cold tickles my arms
it’s a bright sunny day outside

I just came home from the grocery store
where posh people shop
and the employees are always friendly
despite how stressful their day has been so far

I take out my keys
and open the mailbox
your letter fills the entire space
I close and lock the box
and walk up to my room
opening the envelope
