'Sleep Spindles' [SLP013] is the debut full-length of Dublin-born, London-based composer Paul McGuire.

McGuire's fastidious pieces wrench the fizzes, crackles, and hums of acoustic instruments into towering swarms of sound. 'Sleep Spindles' collects three of his most focussed, guttural works to date. On 'Tampered', the minute squeaks of Céline Papion’s cello are gathered in solid hunks; the microtonal guitar drones of 'Marshes' are part seduction, part dread; and 'Sleep Spindles' gleans an earthy poise from the skins of a simple percussion set-up. 'Sleep Spindles' [SLP013] makes the nanoscopic speak with exquisite force, and carves out a defiant zone between the luxurious washes of ambient maestros like Tim Hecker, and the more rarified noise compositions of Helmut Lachenmann.

Aside from numerous individual shows, McGuire’s work has been performed by the London Sinfonietta, Loré Lixenberg and Sarah Nicolls, and at festivals internationally including Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, SPOR in Aarhus, and at Bang On A Can in Massachussets. He is nearing the completion of his doctorate studies with Christopher Fox and Jennifer Walshe at Brunel University.

Despite having known each other for many years, and having a long-held affinity for each other's work, this recording documents the first time Rie Nakajima and Phill Niblock had collaborated together. Recorded in September 2014, the work includes Niblock’s sound collage piece “Crick” and Nakajima performing in response to Niblock’s early seventies film "T H I R”.

Also included in Niblock’s piece ‘Bag’ which was presented on the same night and features David Watson performing on bagpipes.  This recording is from Niblock’s original files.

I discovered the magical nostalgia factory that is vaporwave about two years ago. This piece, a transcription and reinterpretation of "リサフランク420 / 現代のコンピュー" (shouts out to Diana Ross), is inspired by that discovery.

I'd like to give a huge thanks to the UNT Symphony Orchestra and to its director David Itkin for taking the time to read the piece. Also, thanks a ton to the conductor, Daniel Wiley, who did a fantastic job interpreting the work!

During the second wave of the pandemic in Poland, in autumn, vocalists Agata Harz and Katarzyna Smoluk recorded improvised tracks based on an ancient Slavic spell, or ‘enchantment’, as they called it, the purpose of which is to call forth spring after a dark, terrifying wintertime. The vocal tracks lie at the heart of Tim Hecker’s composition, commissioned or Unsound's 'Intermission' album, to be released on March 5th, 2021.

We see only what we are shown. The song shows off a hidden perspective of Ukrainian society. And I believe the mission of the song is to help the World see the true state of living in Ukraine these days. The usage of three languages has a motivation to convey the lyrics with as many people as it is possible. An acapella singing is not chosen accidentally as well. The silence embodies the wasteland, that Ukraine possibly can become one day, if no one demonstrates the voice.

Ми бачимо лише те, що нам показують. Пісня демонструє приховану перспективу українського суспільства. І я вірю, що її місія - допомогти світові побачити справжній стан життя в Україні в наші дні.  Використання трьох мов має мотивацію донести текст якомога більшій кількості людей.  Акапельний спів також вибраний не випадково.  Тиша втілює пустир, яким, можливо, колись стане Україна, якщо ніхто не продемонструє голос.

Das Lied gibt eine verborgene Perspektive auf die ukrainische Gesellschaft.  Die Leute sehen nur das, was ihnen gezeigt wird. Die Mission des Liedes liegt darin, einen Blick auf den wahren Zustand des Lebens in der heutigen Ukraine zu werfen. Die Verwendung der drei Sprachen hat die Motivation, die Texte an möglichst viele Menschen zu vermitteln. Ein A-cappella-Gesang wird nicht zufällig gewählt: Die Stille verkörpert das Ödland, zu dem die Ukraine eines Tages werden kann, wenn niemand die Stimme erhebt.
