You would think that after going to a Sub Focus show like I did Friday, I'd be pumped to play some "dancefloor" DNB, but in reality kinda the opposite happened. I played way more minimal tech rollers and dubby rollers in this sesh than I usually do. I started with some deep and liquid soul vibes and moved into some minimal things about 45 minutes in and cycled through some different energy tech and sci-fi-liquid choons with a touch of austere ragga rollers. Fun sesh with an active chat today, some of my besties were dropping bits and buying Gift Sub Packs to my channel. I was definitely feeling the love — 2 hours seriously just flew buy. Her latest release After All with Gid Sedgwick, her first ever vocal collaboration dropped earlier this month on UKF and gives off real melodic, heavy dancefloor vibes; a fusion that’s become a dominant characteristic in MEL’s signature.

In our exclusive interview we get a taster of how MEL progressively got into D&B through her love of other artists, we talk about the importance of track knowledge as a DJ, her take on the drum & bass sound at the moment and the difference between a radio set and a club or festival mix, just like this mix right here!

Valentines Day Liquid Mix

Having spent the better part of the past decade chasing basslines in dank warehouses all across the United States, the Southern-bred drum & bass artist known as Soothslayer has finally come into her own with her own addictive take on the genre. Known to her friends as Caroline Miller, this die hard junglista originally found her way to the 174 bpm mark via downtempo and trip hop, with well received compositions and productions that fuelled a love for epic atmospheres and wall-trembling basslines.

Having relocated in 2008 from North Carolina to Los Angeles, Soothslayer quickly became a name to be reckoned with as the West Coast scene welcomed her with open arms and she fell in with a like-minded crew of bass lovers. Having represented for some of SoCal's finest, Soothslayer has flexed her skills on the decks for Timeless Drum and Bass, Splat Media's Big Booty Bass, Camp Trip, Outerbass, and Insomniac's own Bassrush crew. Dropping jaws and working the crowd into a frenzy at her first festival debut in 2016 at Nocturnal Wonderland, there's no doubting that Soothslayer has found her calling and is here to slay!
