Leaving

I wrote Warming Playing in November 2011. At that time, we used to talk every day on the phone, about the flood in Genova, about our future, about your cancer.
In these busy days of new projects, works and ideas, you are stocking in my head more than usual.
I understood then it was time to write it again.

Piano Works is the second installment of Lucy Claire’s ‘Works’ series. It is an eclectic take on what piano music can be. Featuring cellist Ren Ford (Keaton Henson’s Romantic Works) and violinist Marie Schreer (The Royal Northern Sinfonia) and surrounded in atmospheric binaural soundscapes, the piano is far from lonely. The work features a collection of pianos from grands and uprights, to electric keyboards, toy and thumb pianos. It is grounded in the real world but hints strongly at the magical and supernatural, it absorbs, transports, then delivers you back to reality with new perspective.

the music of contemporary composer sophia jani is characterized by its great independence from structures and conventions as well as by its musical poetry within a minimalist approach. highlights so far have been the orchestral piece "what do flowers do at night?" performed by the munich symphonic orchestra as well as the invitation to the "bang on a can summer festival" in 2019. 

her work stands out through vast versatility, which has been proven by numerous collaborations and commissions, such as the release of the ep "relive" with pianist/composer carlos cipa through the experimental music label denovali records in 2014, or commissions by the new york-based sirius quartet, the jazzrausch bigband, the munich symphonic orchestra as well as the bang on a can festival fellows among others. furthermore, she has been contributing music to successful theater, dance and film productions, which have been awarded national and international prizes. the comedy "die goldfische" ("the goldfish") by director alireza golafshan was short-listed for the german film award 2019 and the dance piece "close-up" by choreographer katja wachter won the grand prix of "the festival international des ecoles supérieures d'art dramatique rabat".

her music has been released through denovali records, 1631 recordings and moderna records. 

sophia holds a degree in composition from the university of music and performing arts munich and is currently continuing her studies at the yale school of music with david lang with the generous support of the fulbright organization.
