Here's a dark ambient song I'm working on. It's filled with lots of creepy guitar effects, tuvan throat singing, and processed samples of ocean waves. I'm planning on ratcheting up the intensity over several minutes, to create the feel of a chase scene in a horror film, while keeping some of these drones in the background. What does this music make you think of?

This is a song I'm working on for a friend's new film project. My goal here was to create some sort of gloomy post-rock music, using the sound of playing a wineglass with a wet finger as the centerpiece. Then a bunch of other instruments come in to join it!

Underwater Theme (Ambient Version)

Recently, I felt compelled to make some really unsettling, atmospheric music. I drew a lot of inspiration from Robert Rich's 7-hour "Somnium," as well as Martin Stig Andersen's ambient score for Limbo. 

I wanted to explore this idea of... creatures we've never noticed before, and the dawning horror of realizing that they've been here all along. Sort of like the Silence from Doctor Who (super scary monsters btw!). By layering sounds over each other, and bringing certain instruments in gradually, I hope to create a similar feeling in the music -- some of the drones keep the same note for so long, you might even forget they are there. Until they change later on... 

Anyway, it was a fun little experiment. Probably not quite as unsettling or scary as it could be, but maybe someone can make a really awesome short film with it anyway ;)

Falling Through Sunlight - Soren Laulainen and Outset Initiative

Dynamo Ep3 begins in the middle of the action, as Sterling relays to his boss that Axle Rubix is alive and well. Right away, I needed to convey a sense of motion: Sterling is speeding across the desert, and the plot is moving forward. Ian Hubert and I agreed that a driving bassline would work really well for that.

On top of that, I brought back a bunch of the instruments from Sterling's last scene in Ep1 to help tie the two together a bit more, so the whole thing also takes on some dark and ominous undertones.

I started working on this song a few months ago, after watching the trailer for Tron: Legacy. I was really excited to hear that Daft Punk (a French electronic music duo) was going to do the soundtrack, so I decided to see if I could create something similar. Then the song sat on my computer, neglected and unfinished, until just last weekend. I finally went out to see Tron. Then I bought the soundtrack on the same day, came home and re-opened the project file. I was thinking of just including this song as another “preview of the week,” but then inspiration struck and I ended up finishing it! 

As I mentioned, it’s heavily influenced by Daft Punk’s score, which combines electronic music with orchestral music. There are hints of some other late 90s techno in there (like The Crystal Method and Fluke), and I threw in some more really huge drums . You might even jump in your seat! ;-)
