From Colombia, comes episode number 39 of the series sent by Vandel. Deep soulful grooves with clear jazz, soul and funk influences can be listened to in the mix, representing the sound of the house music record label Discos Nutabe, based in Medellin, where Camilo is the curator and an active dj of the house music scene playing on a regular basis on clubs like Bar Calle 9+1.

With previous appearances on some various artists compilations, Vandel made his debut 12" called 'Inundación' in 2016, released on Discos Nutabe, which today celebrates 4 years of existence.

Here it is – “Muttertag” (Mother’s Day)! It’s the result of our collaboration with electronic musician Sitreus Ramirez. I’ve written lyrics and recorded vocals for his dubstep track.

“I am really happy to finally get this out on proper release. It is maybe a bit different from what most people are expecting but I reckon it is good because of that. 

This EP is designed to be listened to through from beginning to end and you will get the most out of it that way. Try listening to it like that. 

I pulled out all the stops with this one. Every instrument you hear is a real instrument. A lot of time spent recording cellos and glockenspiels and all that. I had an earlier version of this EP but I wanted to do it properly so it stands the test of time so I did a lot of re-recording of tracks replacing all the synth or sampled 'real instruments' with legit real instruments. 

When people asked me what genre the stuff I was working on was, I always groaned a bit sighed a bit, then tripped over my tongue a lot trying to explain it and not doing a great job of it. It is deliberately a sort of blur of genres and styles as an effect. I ditched any tracks that sounded too much like established genres or too similar in feel to other tracks on the EP. 

I will have a go... 

Here is me describing the tracks in order; happy dread bass minimalism, breakcore UK garage with lush synths and distortion and chopped up drum fragments, something like the Beatles meets Dub Phizix, Phillip Glass style minimalism but with savage jagged sub-bass, I dunno, baroque acid half speed techstep dancehall techno with a lot of distortion (this is why I don't like describing what genre it is :-) 

It took me quite a long time to feel ready to release this, because a lot of the emotions from the music were still pretty raw. The songs are not really directly about things as much as distillation of feelings of certain times into music. At least the parts I wrote. I cannot speak for the contributions of the vocalists. 

A lot of it is about loss and trauma and exorcising things from an earlier part of my life. It isn’t as much as a downer as you would think from that description. Their is hope and humor in there. There is tenderness and beauty as well as brutality. Their is quite a few banging tunes. It is more about moving on from the negative things and leaving them behind. 

Again, this EP is designed to be listened to through from beginning to end and you will get the most out of it that way.
