This deserves a special disclaimer in 2023, while Russia continues its unjust and cruel invasion of Ukraine. I’ve had a lot of second thoughts about posting a mix of Russian rap music from my childhood at a time like this, but in the end decided that it may serve as a good reminder of the time when artists in Russia didn’t face jail time for rapping about political and social issues. That being said, clearly — support Ukraine by donating, and fuck Putin.

In the early 2000’s a series of bootleg compilations titled “Русский Рэп” (Russian Rap) spread like wildfire among the youth at my grandma’s village. Most households these days had a janky boombox with two decks, which made it pretty easy to set up a little copying operation. I somehow held on to my heavily overwritten copy of Русский Рэп #3 to these days, and was always curious what the other #'s had on them. 

Later on I discovered that some hip hop enthusiasts had created a full web archive of these series and other RU Rap rarities (rapdb.ru) — which finally gave me a chance to learn what I’ve been missing out on all these years. After powering through a few hours worth of some of the most tasteless and poorly produced rap music in the history of the genre, I’ve selected a few favourites that seemed worth showcasing.

First half of the mix is mostly dedicated to hardcore beats and “conscious” rapping. Along with certified classics by heavyweights like Bad B Alliance, you can expect to hear teenagers sharing stories of drug abuse and corruption on their rendition of DJ Vadim’s “The Terrorist”. Certain lyrics arguably didn’t age very well, but some of it hits close to home today, despite its naivety and amateurish delivery.

Second half is all about fun: here you have funky beats, comical punchlines and captivating stories of getting drunk or going to the movies. A personal favourite is “Пиво” with a hook that goes like “Хочу пива / Чтобы тошнило” (I want beer / So I can barf). What else can I say? Genius.

If you are a hip hop DJ, please disregard the abrupt transitions and the occasional shitty scratching. I’m clearly not a hip hop DJ (yet).
