“Hazy (Remaster)” comes on the heels of Kearns’ 2020 EP, Jazzy AF, which hit #1 on JAZZIZ Magazine’s “Top 5 Inside Tracks”, and was celebrated on Divide & Conquer Music for its “blend of sounds that creates a soundscape that listeners can easily get lost in… Jazzy AF sees the artist mixing genres and creating a new sound” - a signature sound that has also been lauded by the 
likes of Dawn Robinson (En Vogue), Eric Benet, James Torme, and Maxwell.   Jamal Ahmed host of the WCLK Atlanta's "The S.O.U.L. of Jazz" tweeted Jef to be "Probably the dopest flautist in the game right now."

The remastering of Hazy by Grammy-winning engineer Randy Merrill (Silk Sonic, Taylor Swift, Mark Ronson) brings a new pulse and charm to the energetic upbeat love song from his album The Flute (which maintained a month-long Top 20 position on the UK Soul Charts.)

Growing up near the Canada-US border, Kearns honed his skill by training with traditional jazz and classical teachers by day and playing along with R&B and hip-hop stations broadcasting out of Detroit by night. A unique style emerged, reminiscent of the expressive tones of an R&B singer. 

Hazy combines Kearns' instrumental virtuosity with the addictively cheerful vocal delivery by Karen Jewels over lush chords and layers of swirling melodic hooks.

Flautist Jef Kearns follows up his recent single Hazy (#77 on Norway's iTunes Top 100 Soul and RnB Chart and Top 10 on the UK Soul Chart) with a modernized take on Leon Haywood's 1974 release, “I Want'a Do Something Freaky to You.”

“Like many, I knew this song growing up as Dr. Dre's sample on 'Nothing But a G Thang' but I recently dug deeper on the source material,” Kearns says.

Jef's flute performance sears with sexiness and serves as lightning to vocalist Alana Bridgewater's (Toronto's production of We Will Rock You) thunderous amount of soul.

Jef enlisted the production genius of long-time collaborator Douglas Romanow who threw a nod at the original with vintage keyboards from the 70s era but also drew from every era since with elements such as real vinyl scratching, live bass and a 90s inspired groove with modern production sounds.

Mastering by Grammy Award winner Randy Merrill (Silk Sonic's Leave the Door Open) further elevates the track.

Jef Kearns is not who would typically come to mind when you think of a best seller in Soul-Jazz and Contemporary R&B (a historical mark he made for his instrument on Amazon.com with his sophomore album, Soulfisticated.)

He is a flautist who, as Detroit Jazz Magazine put it, “makes the flute speak the urban language of soul” with a sound “you normally don’t hear from flautists.” And who, as Smooth Jazz Therapy, a go-to site for smooth jazz reviews said is “dispelling the myth that flute players can’t do urban jazz.”

Jef Kearns’ album, Soulfisticated, sat between the #4 best seller Janelle Monáe‘s “The Electric Lady” and Whitney Houston‘s “Love, Whitney” on Amazon Japan’s R&B charts.

Jef learned to speak the language in the best way possible: immersion. Growing up listening to hip hop and R&B on Detroit radio in the 1990s when the music was what many consider to be in its hey-day, he was the quiet 10 year old riding the line of “loud enough to hear but not loud enough for his parents to catch him up so late” when basking in Kiss FMs late night quiet storm program “Kisses After Dark” and pressing record and rewind on his hip hop radio mixes.

“I’d spend hours in my room playing along with whatever was playing on Hip Hop and R&B radio,” Jef reveals, “and when I wasn’t playing I was listening intensely to what exactly was happening, musically.”

Of his music, Jef says, “It is my mission to show people that flute that can be just as soulful and down-and-dirty as sax.

My music sheds a whole new light on urban music and the flute’s place in it. It’s the flute album for people who think they don’t like flute. You’ve never heard it like this before.”
