Journey 001 : Eudaemonia

In Japanese aesthetics, there is a concept called “Yūgen” that refers to an awareness of the profound grace and subtlety of the universe — an awareness which evokes feelings that are inexplicably deep and too mysterious for words. 
Alan Watts once wrote of Yūgen, noting that, “There is no English word for a type of feeling which the Japanese call yūgen, and we can only understand by opening our minds to situations in which Japanese people use the word […] ‘To watch the sun sink behind a flower-clad hill, to wander on and on in a huge forest without thought of return, to stand upon the shore and gaze after a boat that disappears behind distant islands, to contemplate the flight of wild geese seen and lost among the clouds.’ (Seami) All these are Yūgen, but what have they in common?”

I find these to be beautiful examples of situations which might provoke this feeling of Yūgen, and upon reading them, I feel that I know exactly what Yūgen is, despite there being no English translation. 
Yūgen is an expansive feeling, a mystical awareness, an almost soaring reverence for existence that is summoned forth by a poignant confrontation with the ineffable details of reality.

Spanish is such a beautiful language. 
This word in particular — querencia — rolls off the tongue so beautifully. Not to mention it has an equally beautiful meaning. 
Querencia : the place where you are your most authentic self. You draw your strength from this place, where you truly feel at home. In bullfighting, a bull may stake out his querencia — a certain location in the ring where he feels strong and safe. Throughout the fight, he will frequently return to this preferred locale, gearing up for another go at the matador. 

When I think of my querencia, I think of the mountains. There’s something safe, yet empowering, about being surrounded by tall mountains. It’s like being wrapped in nature’s blanket — receiving a hug from the land. The mountains can move me to tears and bring me to my knees. At the same time, though, I feel empowered by their magnificence … like I can accomplish anything in the world. The constant steadfastness of a mountain somehow grounds me in my own strength. It’s the coolest thing in the world.

While feeling strong is great, and a sense of home even more so, there is something particularly poignant about being your most authentic self. I don’t have to hide from the mountains. I can be real. There’s no society to press expectations on me, or to steer my behavior. I’m on an even playing field with nature, where it’s unable to judge me, and I’m unable to judge it back. There’s an indescribable freedom of expression in this place for me.

Now, maybe your querencia isn’t in the mountains. Maybe it’s in your home. Or perhaps a favorite haunt of yours, like a cafe, or a local park. But I think everyone has this place. Certainly everyone needs a place like this. I would go crazy if I didn’t have a location I could always return to … one that would fill me up and reinvigorate me so completely. If you don’t have a place in mind, maybe you just haven’t found your querencia yet.

That’s why we explore. That’s why I’m always encouraging you to wander. There are so many places we’ve never seen — never experienced. We won’t ever know what’s out there or what will touch us unless we go out and explore.
