There are more but they were made for specific people for special occasions, you'll find a couple of those in here too, but mostly I've left it up to those I made those mixes for to be to decide on if they want to share them. Here you'll find a bunch of different genres, House, Deep House, Techno, Prog, Tribal, Tech, Psytrance, Hip Hop, Rock, Soul etc. Just a good cross section of me really. 

Pretty much my input into the culture and my only legacy. Hope it helps you get to know me a bit deeper.

Not Jen - CHI WOW WAH CITY 2021

On Tuesday 17 August I was round at one of my friend's places for a catch up. It just so happened that on that particular evening it was announced NZ was going into another level 4 lockdown. I was feeling stressed and anxious as all get out, so I put myself in his studio to play some tunes to calm myself down. All I knew is that I wanted to play what I would play to a 2am floor. And this mix is the result, it's what a basement club would wear. 

On that very same day a beloved member of Wellington's dance scene and someone I had been dancing with and have loved since 1996 left us. I didn't know it at the time I was playing, but I feel like I channelled our beautiful Nick  as I danced during that jam session, ciggie in hand and all. 

Yesterday I wrote a piece about what it was like for me as a woman starting to DJ in the NZ scene 15 years ago. It wasn't easy but I had amazing support from very special humans and I am glad I spoke up so that maybe what I went through doesn't have to happen again.

So with all this in mind, with my thoughts harking back to 90s and early 2000s dancefloors, memories surfacing of humans who have come and gone (and some are still by my side to this day) and the knowledge of my musical dreams being an actual reality that I am so blessed to live, I decided to call this mix Foundations.

Thank you to Cooper for letting me unleash in his studio, James Jackson for yet another epic master, Vicki Watson for the photo, all my humans for being amazing, endlessly inspiring me and caring for me, and Nick Ryan, you wonderful and beautiful soul. Rest in peace and I know we will be on a dancefloor together again.

Be kind to one another and never stop dancing.

It's easy to assume that Out Of Sorts came Out Of Nowhere when their spirited first remix made its way into the hands of Kompakt Records gaining attention from some of electronica's most seasoned captains. However, something about their productions tells you they didn't – a bold entity lurks within those modern grooves and nostalgic moods telling us we're not dealing with lucky amateurs.

Because we're not. In fact, Out Of Sorts was always there – the nickname in fact for their imaginary friends from childhood who've acted as both muse and totem spirit for all of their creative projects since. And now, after huge international success under a different moniker, they have embraced these characters in the shadows to embody a sound that's difficult to pigeonhole, leaving the past almost irrelevant – except that this is a duo who know how to bring it.

Which they are. From the grimiest clubs to the most revered festivals on the global circuit, somewhere in the abyss you may just hear something out of sorts – channelled by guardians that only they can see.

Strawberry Radio #028 - Out Of Sorts [Live @ SF18]

TANIWHA'S DEN 2020! Wow, what weekend of stellar music and raving with some of the best artists, crew and humans in the game. 
After some unfortunate issues with the recording process leaving my set with missing sections I decided to go back and reconstruct it in the same track order as on the night.

Really stoked to be able to put this one up. First and foremost I'd like to thank everyone involved behind the scenes from Grant the land owner, the visual crew and Mike A and Peter May on the sound, to all the food and drink vendors and crew that make Taniwha's Den possible for artists like me to be able to do what we love with those we love. But most of all I'd like to send heartfelt aroha to all those punters, munters and my mighty rave tribe, thank you all for the love shown on the dance floor not just to me but to everyone involved.

I was lucky enough to play from 9pm through till 10:30pm on the main stage, the sun had just set and darkness fell across the Taniwha. This allowed me the opportunity to change the dynamic of the main floor from a more laid back daytime vibe, pick up the tempo as the lighting came into its own and set up for the acts that directly followed me, my brother Mr. Oz and my sister the motherfucken Heylady, and they SLAYED the dance floor. 

Thanks you to everyone that sent through footage and/or pics from my set too, super appreciated. 

My advice is to turn this fucker up loud and play it outside where it belongs ;)

In the mid to late 90’s, the dance scene in Wellington was a fully fledged adolescent with an ever-growing foothold on the local nightlife. Dance itself was about to go through a global cultural shift which would see it’s popularity explode and it become completely integrated into the musical landscape, but for the most part it was still an underground movement. It was an exciting time to go out and discover a new evolving sound, something the bars that plied the likes of R’n’B, Top 40 and Rock music were unable to provide or keep up with.  It was in this new melting pot of sound that HAPE first heard the pulsating rhythms and melodies that would go on to change his life. Being a punter first and foremost for a few years allowed him to refine the sound he liked to listen to and discover the venues that best catered to it. Golden era bars and clubs such as Tatou, Phoenix, The Nine Complex, Vurtigo, Paradiso, and a multitude more all touted the way forward for Wellington dance.   Looking back it’s now obvious that HAPE was going to naturally progress from being a punter on the dance floor to being behind the decks, such was his appetite and voracity for the music. With an ever growing collection of records it wasn’t long before he got some 1210’s, delved into learning the craft, honing his skills and playing alongside friends. Some of whom were, and still are, heavyweights in the scene today. He cut his teeth at the likes of Paradiso and Mercury Lounge alongside Dannyboy and Mr. Oz before holding his first residency at Terrace Bar for 4 years. It was here that he would come into his own and develop the sound he’s known for today. This is also where several club nights were born, his own High Calibre, and with the rise of Heylady, Back On Track. Both going from strength to strength. HAPE was soon a regular on club nights and outdoor party line ups all around the capital and further afield.   In recent times, HAPE continued to make a name for himself during a 4 year stint in Auckland where he ran monthly club night Pitch n’ Faders at Red Bar with old Terrace Bar cohort Matt Empyre. Together they also found a new space to continue the High Calibre club night, at Auckland’s ancestral home of house music, the infamous Ink Bar. HAPE continued to play across the city for some of the Auckland scene’s most loved and well respected club brands and venues before returning to the capital in 2018 where he has been a regular face behind the decks, most notably at Dirty Laundry alongside long time friend Mr. Oz.   From those early hedonistic nights in the plush surrounds of Wellington clubland to the gritty freedom that only a large outdoor rig can provide, HAPE is a through and through beat merchant with an absolute passion for storming any dance floor you give him. Constantly striving to both push himself and take the audience on a journey through dark vocal prog with lush servings of deep tribal tech and everything in between, it’ll always be infused with his own twist of high energy funk.
