This year the Tour De France Grand Départ is in Copenhagen. The route is very close to Music For Dreams HQ, therefore we decided to put out a little EP to celebrate this event.

We asked a few MFD artists to do cover versions of electronic pioneers Kraftwerk from their incredible Tour De France Soundtracks album which was released in 2003.
Charlotte & Reinhard (from Rheinzand) have done a version of Vitamin.
Danish Duo Subnesia have done a modern funky take on the 1983 classic title track with Truck D on vocals.

The Swan & The Lake featuring Rosebud chose Aéro Dynamik for their version.
We think its a nice homage to the original and also a fantastic cover artwork by MSB Creations to finish off the release.

From the man who once compared EFUNK The Mixtape to a "triple-breasted female terminator from the future" comes Love My Life, retro-future pop gold served with cheese on top. Stephan Armleder aka The Genevan Heathen, who has appeared on Soul Clap Records before with his cover of Egyptian Lover's The Alzeby Inn, is a frenzy of word play, cult status and dapper dress. Here he invites background vocalist Amy Douglas and takes us out for a day in the Heathen life:

In The Heathens words:

"It's all in the title. It's about loving your life, loving yourself, loving the people who matter to you. It's like a little postcard from heaven. I wrote this song under the influence of the most amazing woman I have ever met - a woman who taught me how to enjoy the good times and learn from the bad times.

If you listen to the lyrics, you'll hear mentions of multiple women - it's fun to live vicariously through songs, it's like looking back at your life like it was a movie, adding that extra Hollywood spice to it. But at the end of the day, all the ladies in the song are just various incarnations of the same woman, real love.

I originally wrote it to a loop by my friend Goon Kid back in Geneva, and later on Tim Wagner of Dither Down fame made a whole new instrumental for it and gave it that 80s movie end credits vibe I love so much.  It's just feel-good music to enjoy life to!"

On remix duty, Soul Clap transforms the tempo and vibe into a dance groove guaranteed to get the juices flowing like a glass of funky cold medina.

Reinhard Vanbergen reveals first taste ‘Helectrix’ of forthcoming album.

The project is a playground of cross-era experiments revolving around the guitar. Combining 60s-jangle and psychedelia with modern beats, the multi-instrumentalist cooks up a sort of retro-futuristic surf rock. Timelines united in lucid melodies, weaving in and out in a masquerade of guitars.

The album is a tribute to Reinhard’s long-time guitar-manufacturer Guttlin Guitars, with all instruments on the record except beats and synths made by him, and all tracks taking their name after his guitar models.

When we started throwing our Dancing On The Charles parties next to Boston’s most famous river back in 2008 we had no idea it would become the inspiration for a now annual music compilation showcasing the immense talent of Boston's electronic music producers. In fact we had no idea we’d ever even have our own record label! Yet, here we are in 2014 proudly presenting the second edition of DOTC. A collection of music embodying the spirit and persistence that once fueled those epic riverside summertime parties and continues to guide the Boston dance music scene.

Dancing On The Charles Volume 2 picks up where Volume 1 left off and features an even more diverse range of music. An overall deep feeling is this years’ theme as we dive into a 13 track selection from repeat contributors and new Soul Clap Records recruits. Returning to the comp is quickly rising deep house talent Caserta, our favorite afro-funk producer of 2013, Bosq (who has teamed up with us, Soul Clap), Bon Jonson (this time appearing as Nightriders AND Peyote Purple), Tate Masimore aka Chas Bronz (who presents his new project The Sheffield Boys with young guns Smeed & Suspence), and of course the smoothest of the smooth Roldy Cezaire. New artists include: Boston tech-house staple Tamer Malki, former Phoenix Landing resident D-Lu (this will be her very first release!), disco-connector Serge Gamesbourg and all around disco dude Brenden Wesley, Tuck Diggz (working alongside Mystery Roar) and new Boston transplant James Cook who we've been following since his college days and are finally getting out on our label!

Time flies when you’re having fun. Six more years can blink by and who knows where we’ll be. One thing’s for sure, we’ll never forget where we came from and Dancing On The Charles Volume 2 is our latest tribute to our hometown.

Just over a decade on from the launch of Leng Records, the Simon Purnell/Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy-helmed label is set to release its’ 50th 12” single. Fittingly, it’s the first of a series of sampler EPs that form part of the imprint’s belated 10th anniversary celebrations.

In 2020, label fans will be treated to a celebratory compilation featuring a mixture of Leng classics, overlooked favourites and previously unheard material. Some of this music will also be released on a series of vinyl EPs, with this first volume focusing on unreleased material from long-time friends of the family Q&A and Lex.

Q&A is a collaboration between Phenomenal Handclap Band mainstay Quinn Luke, and long-time friend and musical associate Alexis Georgopoulos, formerly of San Francisco dub disco/punk funk heroes Tussle. The pair worked together extensively at the tail end of the 2000s, but only ever released one single: 2009’s “Tumbling Cubes/Trap Door” on celebrated NYC label DFA.

The two tracks showcased on this Leng Records sampler were recorded during the same period as that celebrated single but are only now seeing the light of day. “RM” is a typically low-slung and percussive affair that sees Luke and Georgopoulos wrap bubbly electronic melodies and glassy-eyed aural textures around a suitably weighty dub disco groove. In contrast, “Pulse” is a deliciously hypnotic, mind-altering affair: a bona-fide late night throb-job in which trippy electronic motifs, chiming melodies and crunchy Clavinet riffs vibrate attractively atop another killer punk-funk bassline and locked-in drums.

Over on side B, Athens scene staple Lex takes over. The Greek DJ/producer – real name Alex Andrikopoulos – first rose to prominence locally when he ran the Radical Soundz record shop in the first decade of the century but has since become better-known worldwide for offering up music and DJ sets that frequently join the dots between disco, house and techno.

The two tracks he’s delivered for the Leng 10th birthday sampler series are typically warm, loose and groovy, drawing more inspiration from ‘70s disco and ‘80s electrofunk than contemporary club culture. For proof, first check the mid-tempo sparkle of “GP Score”, an organic disco-boogie number rich in low-slung bass, razor-sharp flanged guitars, colourful synthesizer lead lines, early house style piano solos and the kind of squelchy electronic bass more often featured on kaleidoscopic P-funk records. 

This attractively rubbery synth-bass sound can also be heard on “Max Pen”, a slightly deeper and more laidback affair crafted from an attractive mix of loose-limbed drums, mazy synth solos, jangling piano motifs and sweet, spaced-out chords. Retro-futurist in nature, the track offers further evidence of Lex’s increasingly expressive, funky and musically rich trademark sound.
