We are excited to kick off our new mix series with a local LA legend and one of the first to every grace the decks at Discotheke in LA, it's none other than FSQ!

FSQ celebrates their tenth anniversary in 2023, with the music project being born out of the epic collaboration between Parliament-Funkadelic and Soul Clap in 2013. This six person team covers soul, funk, disco and house music in their original and remix productions. 

FSQ DJ sets are helmed by the group's leader, Chuck Da Fonk, and extend into some of the funkiest corners of dance music, where you'll hear deep Balearic grooves, rare P-Funk sides, 80s boogie funk, uncommon new wave 12"s, and modern underground house cuts. For this exclusive mix for the Discotheke party, Chuck captures some of the vibe he brought to his last appearance in early 2022. Laced with two hours of funk leaning jams, this mix explores some of the deeper FSQ productions including the group's remix work for Nona Hendryx and Nick Monaco, and FSQ collaborations with European based nu-disco producers Alan Dixon, Colleen Cosmo Murphy, Yam Who?, and Birdee. Classic funk from George Clinton sits alongside New York City disco-not-disco cuts by Kid Creole & The Coconuts and Yello. 80's dance jams by Thomas Dolby and Duran Duran are foisted up against fresh new releases by modern nu-disco artists Midnight Magic, Tigerbalm, and Rheinzand. With so much music in the FSQ record bag, it's always hard to choose what to put into a DJ mix, but the Discotheke party is about dancing, disco vibes, and a persistent groove, which this Chuck Da Fonk selected set certainly delivers over the course of two hours.

FSQ, an acronym for Funk, Style, Quality, is comprised of Chuck "Da Fonk" Fishman, Sa´D "The Hourchild" Ali, Matt “One Era” Coogan, and Chas Bronz. Each member of this quintet derives from a deep musical background.

Chuck Da Fonk toured and recorded with George Clinton & Parliament - Funkadelic in the mid nineties. The Hourchild is equal parts hype-man as he is discographer, having cut his teeth in the nineties servicing Tommy Boy’s record pool. The Hourchild is also George Clinton’s nephew who looked after a young Chuck back in the day.  Philly-based Matt Coogan “One Era” is a talented multi-instrumentalist and producer. Rounding out this diverse crew, Chas Bronz, is most known for his talents behind the decks and on the guitar, as well as a slew of other instruments.

Winter 2014 brought about FSQ’s first release on Soul Clap records, the "Zulu Congo Call” EP. In addition to working on new productions, FSQ continues to remix other artists’ works in their signature style of Northern Soul and Caribbean Disco. 

Description of the Mix:

This is a journey through funk classics, Caribbean dubs, and rare remixes of new wave gems. Some of today's best new sounds creep in. "Sometimes you hear a new track that you know borrows from a classic and they didn't do a sample specifically, but you know it's calling out another funk jam," says FSQ's Sa'd "The Hourchild" Ali, "and FSQ is one of the few DJ teams that is going to be able to hear that and put the pieces together". That's why in this mix you'll find Dirtybird's Justin Jay right along side Philly funkers The Fatback Band, or Nick Monaco nudged up against The Art of Noise. 

We've dropped some exclusives here - like Michael The Lion - who has an EP coming out on Soul Clap Records - and some of our own FSQ remix work for the label. 

Also there's a heavy component that delves into the Caribbean sound, including a rare nugget from the legendary Barbados house band, The Coach House Rhythm Section. 

New wave is a style constant for FSQ. "There are certain new wave songs from my youth I'll always throw in an FSQ set," says Chuck Da Fonk, “...but the great thing is that these songs came out in the 80's with 10 different remixes, so you'll never hear the same version twice. For instance, Yello's "Call It Love" had four different 12" maxi singles, plus a CD maxi single, and cassette single at the time of release and like Pokemon, we had to catch em all."

With the addition of 8-time Grammy-nominated producer G Koop the trio became FSQ, a production team committed to creating original funk of supreme quality.

In the years to follow, Boston-based guitarist Chas Bronz, Philadelphia drummer One Era, and New York audio engineer Morgan Wiley joined FSQ. You’ll find the majority of their original songs and remixes on Soul Clap Records along with FSQ’s 2020 Reprise Tonight - the group’s debut LP. Presented as a tale of having one last party in the span of 24 hours,  features guest appearances from funk royalty, including George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, Nona Hendryx, Fonda Rae, Denise King, and Dolette McDonald. In 2022, FSQ released a funked-up remix album for their debut record, aptly titled Reprise Reprise Tonight. This jam-packed album features 16 remix turns on the OG cuts by Tom Moulton, Ray Mang, Birdee, DJ Rocca, Lee Curtiss + more.
