BON AIME and Nikko had known each other for years from sharing the decks at a hippie-infested yoga studio in LA, but in pure coincidence crossed paths in Tulum during the start of the pandemic. Nikko’s van had stranded in Tulum after a long drive through the U.S - he was stuck on the beach with all of his music gear. So they did the thing any duo of believers would do, and started to organise beach parties for all to attend. 

In the pursuit of freedom, self-expression and most importantly, vibes, their local reputation as premier dealers of funky grooves grew, and they began to play at an assortment of weird and wonderful events, bringing their disco charm everywhere they went. This track was born out of an experiment to produce an edit in one night before a gig. 

While many of their edits haven’t seen the light of day, Evil Ways has been played across Mexico, the USA and even BON AIME's homeland of the Netherlands - finally finding a home in SCR two years later. The young adventurers have many a memory playing this edit, and we hope you can make some more.

The 8 months since the December 2009 release of the first FreE.P. has been a whirlwind of touring that has take the humbled Soul Clappers around the world and back! From sweaty warehouses in London, to game changing daytime parties in Miami, to massive festivals in Portugal, to pure after hours magic at Berlin's Bar 25, they've spread their house music gospel, while meeting some of the coolest and most talented musicians and DJs in the game. Many of these unique individuals have been touched by Soul Clap’s music and in turn created their own edits/bootlegs, which have become the secret weapons of Soul Clap’s DJ sets. Now, countless dancefloors later, Soul Clap selected a few of our favorite party rocking jams of the summer to share with the world and they're proud to present The Clap & Friends FreE.P.

First in line are Wolf + Lamb/Double Standard label mates and Brooklyn unsung heroes Nick Debruyn & Greg Paulus aka No Regular Play with "Strange Cameo". Their rework of an 80's funk gem is inspired by many Marcy Hotel dance floor moments and has an oh so classic house groove and fresh bass line begging to be danced to. Next up is a Washington DC based industry newcomer, but after hours veteran, Navid Zahraie aka NavBox. His breakout contribution "He Likes You Too" is a stunning and emotional rework of an American singer-songwriter. This tune was one of the most magical moments of Soul Clap’s 2010 Sunday School For Degenerates DJ set that had DJ T of Get Physical fames's jaw dropping and feet moving. Then from over the pond in the UK are the Leeds institution of Mark Caramelli and Paul Hargreaves, better known as Death On The Balcony. A few months back Soul Clap remixed them for their Magic Bag Records imprint and after a few gigs together in Leeds everyone has become close friends. They bring a dancefloor bomb with a sense of humor to the release with "Cruel Banana". This 80's pop hit gets a monster drum pump and rolling bassline guaranteed to please and cheese. Finally, to complete the release the Soul Clap vaults have been opened to reveal "Falling From The Sky". This piece was written around the same time as The RnB FreE.P., but never saw the light of day. With 90's NYC at it's filter heavy core, the Clap have built a drum and synth framework that sets an afterhours mood perfect for falling from the sky and of course puffing tough.

Wolf + Lambs' San Fran trio Pillowtalk join the W+L Black edits crew, serving up tastefully housed-up reworks of soul gems. First up they get the scissors out on Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's late 60s soul anthem "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing", turning it into an extended, chugging disco-soul bomb. Next up is Bobby Hebb's version of the classic "Sunny", this time with the simplest of house beats added, making this an essential for Marcy Hotel nights. Lastly the Festivals' super-slow soul smoocher "You've Got The Makings Of A Lover" gets seriously pepped-up, with BPMs pushed towards peak-time dancefloor action.

Earlier this year The Emanations announced their arrival with a Technicolor debut single ‘Love’, signalling a new direction for Super Weird Substance, bringing in a more youthful energy. Working as The Emanations, Greg Wilson and Ché Wilson explore a new cut and paste approach to production, having collaborated on a number of remixes these past couple of years.

Returning the favour for the GW/CW remix of New York’s Underground System, acclaimed Boston-based DJ and production duo Soul Clap have worked their magic on the Emanation’s debut, which now sees three new versions titled ‘Spread A Little Love’ - a Soul Clap extended mix and dub version plus a special Greg Wilson edit. The remix, and its variants, with a nod to D.C. LaRue and Firefly, evoke the jazz-funk vibes of the late-‘70s/early-‘80s.

Featuring SWS favourites The Reynolds and flautist Manon McCoy, who adds a deeply emotive and delicate layer of ethereal magic, Greg and Ché had already created a blissed-out slice of a Balearic summer with the original, although, to date, it’s unfortunately received sparse dance floor action given the shutdown of the clubbing industry due to COVID-19. Soul Clap’s workout runs at a mammoth 10 minutes plus, giving the track a whole new spaced-out dimension and allowing the listener to get further lost in the depths of its sonic realms, whilst their dub version boils the track down to a more visceral concentrate that’s sure to ignite dancefloors.   

Soul Clap have been incredibly prolific the past few years, with a continuous stream of quality originals, remixes and compilations being released via Soul Clap Records, alongside various collaborative works like this release with Super Weird Substance.

Greg and Ché have hit a similarly productive work-rate together, with remixes for Confidence Man, Jarvis Cocker, Simply Red, DSK, Sleight Of Hands, The Cuban Brothers, Hipnotic, Bella Technika and Jungle Giants under their belts, they’re still attracting more remix requests and have further original music in the works with The Emanations, utilising stems provided by Tyrell, the Canadian-based multi-instrumentalist for further SWS releases.
