Next up on SCR Exclusives is a classy retouch to a classy classic

BON AIME and Nikko had known each other for years from sharing the decks at a hippie-infested yoga studio in LA, but in pure coincidence crossed paths in Tulum during the start of the pandemic. Nikko’s van had stranded in Tulum after a long drive through the U.S - he was stuck on the beach with all of his music gear. So they did the thing any duo of believers would do, and started to organise beach parties for all to attend. 

In the pursuit of freedom, self-expression and most importantly, vibes, their local reputation as premier dealers of funky grooves grew, and they began to play at an assortment of weird and wonderful events, bringing their disco charm everywhere they went. This track was born out of an experiment to produce an edit in one night before a gig. 

While many of their edits haven’t seen the light of day, Evil Ways has been played across Mexico, the USA and even BON AIME's homeland of the Netherlands - finally finding a home in SCR two years later. The young adventurers have many a memory playing this edit, and we hope you can make some more.

Nick Monaco - She Got That Fire (Jeremy Sole Remix)

Alejandro, known artistically as Casablanca 303, is a Bogotá - born electronic music producer and DJ currently based in Oslo, Norway. Since launching the Casablanca 303 project in 2014, he has cultivated a distinctive sound that blends house and deep house with influences from jazz, acid house, krautrock, disco, and other electronic subgenres. His creative approach has earned him a reputation as a forward-thinking artist.

Casablanca 303 has released music on his own imprint, Cocuy Records (Colombia), as well as on renowned Norwegian labels such as Badabing Diskos, Mhost Likely, and Lab Cleaning Jams. These releases reflect his artistic vision and dedication to pushing the boundaries of electronic music production.

Regarding his Extravaganza remix - when he first heard the song, he instantly loved it, and a spark of creativity took shape. Naturally inspired by the Soul Clap Records sound and Norwegian space disco, he started jamming and ended up with a funky, arpeggiated track. Without any expectations, and before reaching out to the Soul Clap team, he finished the remix and shared it with friends and colleagues, receiving great feedback and a strong response.

Bay Area born and raised DJ and producer Papa Lu is family to Soul Clap, and he recently made his move to Los Angeles where he is making his mark on the house music scene. Lu is steadily building his collection of acid tinged, funky house burners, while also exploring Latin house.

For his debut on Soul Clap Records, he teams up with our friend, producer and the multihypenate The Whooligan on this thick track titled “Starting To Rise”, which continues the disco house vibe he brought with ASTU on "Red Hot". Once the beat drops, a strong Latin rhythm takes over with layers of syncopated percussion, adding a strong Cumbia house flavor to the diverse mix.

Lu's recent run of parties includes performances with Sven Väth, Walker & Royce, and Todd Terry

Starting to Rise

Tate Masimore ( afka Chas Bronz, and of FSQ, Pillowtalk ) and his brother in music Spencer Flückiger (aka Suspence) team up again as The Sheffield Boys on "Pretty Faces". You've heard the boys on Soul Clap's "Dancing on The Charles" compilations. Here they rework an 80s midwest boogie deep cut adding a modern house veneer to this slab of funk, replete with intricate rhythm guitar led driven build ups, booming drum break downs, and a wide as the horizon bass synth line.

The Sheffield Boys - Pretty Faces

The Stairway to Nowhere (FSQ Remix) is part of a large collection of previously unreleased FSQ remixes, available exclusively to Soul Clap Records Bandcamp monthly subscribers. Titled "FSQ - The Remix Special 2" this collection covers unexpected remix work that the Soul Clap Records stalwart group FSQ has undertaken in the past decade.

The original track "Stairway To Nowhere" was released in 2021 by dynamic producer / songwriter Le Chev (Michael Cheever) and Mexico's finest, Pato Watson and singer songwriter Drew Citron.

For their remix, FSQ turns down the tempos on the original, and adds heaps of slinky Spanish styled guitars, booming funk slap bass, turning this stairway into a path to the Balearic isles. FSQ's One Era (aka Matt Coogan) provides most of the additional instrumentation here, including his trademark pocketed disco drumming and Caribbean percussion stylings.

Le Chev (Michael Cheever) is a musician, producer, and DJ. He is known for his songwriting, recording and production work with LP Giobbi, Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters), Crush Club, Purple Disco Machine, SSION, Matthew Barney (artist), Lauren Hill, Johnny Stimson, SOFI TUKKER, Fischerspooner, and many more.

If you have danced in Mexico you’ve heard about Pato Watson for sure. Close to being legendary educating Mexican clubbers for over 20 years, the Mexico City native, is part of the successful duo NSM PSM (No somos machos Pero somos muchos). He was part of the Mexican Institute of Sound, has performed in some of the most important festivals worldwide, including Coachella, Vive Latino, La Fete de la Musique (Paris), Rock al Parque (Bogota, Colombia), also in countries like Sweden, Norway, Spain and USA. He has shared the stage with artists such as Soulwax, 2 many djs, MSTRKFT, Digitalism, Fisherspooner, Felix Da Housecat, Z-Trip, Mix Master Mike, 2 Bears to name a few …

Brooklyn indie-rock stalwart Drew Citron formed Beverly in 2013, after having got her start as a touring member with Frankie Rose and The Pains of Being Pure of Heart. With Free Now, Citron, one of the most beautiful voices in Indie Rock, comes to the table with a whole lot of pain to sing about and the full musical knowledge to put herself, and her talents, front and center.

This series of dynamic sounding, fully mastered and thoughtful edits comes from Detroit’s Gino (@ginoisland) who has a long history with Soul Clap, having first met Charlie and Eli at the Electric Forest in 2013, and becoming their first intern. Gino selected songs across all genres to rework for Soul Clap Records and YOU including recognizable early 00s indie pop hits, 70s AM radio classics, R&B / hip hop anthems, with some soul and funk. Each "Gino Edit" in the series chugs, shakes, and moves with beefy drum programming, precise musical rearrangements, and the powerful but sparing use of additional instrumentation. These edits are more than just DJ tools, they are reflections of Gino’s deep appreciation for bringing all kinds of music together for dancefloor enjoyment. We start today with the dreamy “It’s Automatic” which seems as ethereal as the original until you start to swing to the shuffle of Gino’s knocking drums. 

You can find Gino in Detroit since 2017 where he first made an impression at the storied venue TV Lounge at the time he became one of the club’s youngest residents, taken under the wing of former head honcho Mister Joshooa. "Trying to capture the feeling of summer in the Northeast is tough, the most concise summation I could muster is, "finally here, it's almost over" because honestly thats how it feels up here. (not to mention that by the time I finally ever do a summer mix, it tends to be almost over). That feeling of fleeting warmth and beauty coupled with my city emptying out every summer (byyyye students!) is what I tried to capture in this mix, and for me this is what it sounds like inside my head when I step out of the house and start walking on those first warm days. It's also my attempt to extend the summer feeling a little longer than the weather usually allows us to. It's a funky little 55 minute trip through some disco, cumbia, funk, afrobeat y mas. Owing their foundations to traditional afrobeat (and named after a Fela Kuti song), the Brooklyn-based, female-fronted band, Underground System, has built an international reputation around a seamlessly executed stage show, astonishing wherever they go, and compelling crowds to move with unbridled verve. 

Robbing American “afrobeat” of its derivative formalism, Underground System continues to reinvent their brand of global dance music, remaining a force determined to recreate, redefine, and reconstruct. 

In September 2018 the band released their debut LP What Are You on Soul Clap Records, the much-loved New York City imprint known for their coupling of party-ready DJ culture and shapeshifting live acts. Departing from the extended forms formally associated with Underground System’s live performances and stylistic roots. Hints of afrobeat, no wave, world, electronic, contemporary classical, disco, house, and genre-defying elements combine tightly to reflect a self-aware, edgy, and cohesive statement not currently being made by any other band.

Following up on “What Are You,” Underground System returns to Soul Clap Records with a remix package & music video for their standout single “Just A Place” due out, June 7th. Full of heavy hitters and dancefloor bombs, leading off is Germany’s king of the remix, Gerd Janson, who gives us a powerful 80’s influenced main mix and a stripped back drum tool. Joining Gerd on the package, UK legend Greg Wilson, who joins forces with his son Che, along with Soul Clap, Midnight Magic, Sol Power All-Stars, and Underground System mastermind, Peter Matson.
