Worldwide Award winners First Word Records are pleased to welcome back Souleance; a duo that have been releasing music with us for a decade now, and triumphantly returning to the fold with some brand new music for 2020.

Expanding on the original Normand-Parisian super-duo of Fulgeance and Soulist, the Souleance crew now includes Vincent Choquet on synths and Guillaume Rossel on drums as part of their live outfit. Whilst sonically their style remains unchanged, the formation into a full band sees the Souleance sound become bigger, more realised and more formidable than ever.

The title track 'Les Mouches' sets off the EP in a playful disco manner - a chugging bassline, assorted synthesisers, disco claps and a four-to-the-floor drum track, inspired by the likes of Larry Levan and Candido. Meaning "flies", Les Mouches was a legendary Manhattan club that existed around the era of Studio 54, and was infamously a hangout spot for Imelda Marcos. The club itself was named after a play by Jean-Paul Sartre.

French slang for "tickle", 'GUILI' is an epic disco-funk piece inspired by the likes of Azymuth, Herbie Hancock and Marcos Valle, but incorporated with Souleance's trademark sounds of fuzzy bass-heavy electronica, synths and samples, giving the track a fresh contemporary twist. Meanwhile, the (digital only) Art Of Tones mix ramps up the disco elements heavily, incorporating some vocals, strings and horn stabs to create some sure fire heat for the summertime. 

The flipside 'TORO' is amuch more tweaked-out, synth-heavy bomb, influenced by artists such as Prince, Parliament and French electronic club music. All tracks mark the evolution of the duo into a full live band, whilst remaining true to their sonic mission of producing music crafted especially for the dancefloor.

The band have been performing live at various festivals and venues across Europe, with upcoming appearances scheduled at the Pura Vida Festival, Greece in August and Jazz à Vienne in July.

Heavenly Sweetness in collaboration with First Word Records proudly bring you a ‘Beautiful’ new album from the formidably funky French duo, Souleance.

So the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder (or perhaps in this case, the ear!). How we define beauty varies from person to person. Be it a meal, a landscape, a picture, a record…

Appreciating and admiring beauty could be considered an art in itself, and one that Souleance have made a rule of life. This ethic is transposed into their own craft, used as fuel to turn beautiful moments into music. This 15-track album seeks to convey this through an assortment of sun-saturated grooves of different shapes and sizes.

While remaining true to their style of creating cut & paste sound collages and incorporating dusty samples, this album seeks to expand upon their own sonic path. Fulgeance lays down masterful work on keys, beats and bass, with Soulist the driving force behind song composition and percussive scratching. Combined, their only guideline is to make music that makes them tick, beyond the constraints of genres, trends or the criteria of “beauty” outside of their own tastes. Souleance return with a brand new EP for First Word Records. Following the huge success of 'La Beat Tape' in early 2013, the French duo have been busy in the studio preparing a 6-tracker aimed squarely at the dancefloor. At this time of year we're all looking for those tracks to set alight the parties, festivals and beaches of the summer season. Last year Souleance's 'Jogar' EP filled that gap, this time around they have delivered once again with the addictive, brassy bounce of 'Secoue'. Taking their influence from the Haitian style of meringue known as Compa, Fulgeance and Soulist have crafted an instant dancefloor bomb. 'Secoue' translates to 'Shake' which is about as appropriate a title as you're going to get.

We welcome back long-time First Word family, Souleance, with ‘Bamboule’; fresh from their respective cut-ups for our sister label, Excursions, and their recent ‘Raw Funk’ set, we have a 5-track EP containing something for all the family, crafted with love once again by France’s Fulgeance & DJ Soulist. A truly eclectic collection, comprised of afro grooves, tropical vibes, b-boy rhymes, head-nodding shakers and intensely hype floor-fillers. A seriously fun selection. 

It kicks off with ‘Partay’, a mid-tempo slice of bouncy tropical boogie that does exactly what it says on the tin. An effervescent synth-bassline rides on top of a delectable disco shuffle, complete with classic reggae chants. 

Title track ‘Bamboule’ is a seriously energetic afro-funk beast. A truly infectious percussive rhythm track, laced with an immense bassline, vocal chops and synth rides, this one is 100% guaranteed to entice any dancefloor into a trance-like state of bugged-out body moves. 

’That Guy’ is some uptempo piano-rolling hip hop business, enlisting the help of Brooklyn MC, Von Pea, from the crew Tanya Morgan, who’ve been making noise on the independent hip hop scene for over a decade, as well as recently collaborating with GUTS. 

We dip down to around the 85BPM mark for ‘J’aime Marcher’, a lounging boom bap bumper with sloppy drums, jazzy rhodes and vivacious horns. 

Closing the EP is ‘Brown Bags’; an almost Dilla-esque cut-up, complete with rolling neck-breaking drums, sweet soul samples and stabs of prog rock. An abundance of variety, we think you’ll agree. 

For those that don’t know, the Parisian duo hooked up just over a decade ago, and haven’t stopped to rock & shock parties, clubs and festivals globally since, building a fan-base of solid party people and revered selectors along the way. As always, the wonderful Alice Dufay provides the artwork, making this an essential package for you and yours.

From the church to the library, it's now time for 'A Sweet Excursion', courtesy of our favourite French funkateers, DJ Soulist & Fulgeance aka Souleance, offering up three tasty edits to feed the dancefloor.

'Fantasie' opens the set with an idyllically relentless rhodes-riff riding a slice of sugary boogie, with a super squelchy bassline and a healthy layer of disco percussion spread on top, for those with a sweet tooth.

The righteous horns of 'Lord' blaze into play next accompanied by a 4/4 disco kick, before the sugar rush kicks in and the band let loose an almighty groove. Even a soulful set of angels begin to sing, guaranteeing this one will bring out a lil' bit of that holy ghost within.

We end out with 'Funkin' which does exactly what it says on the tin. A solid five minutes-plus of delectable heads-down funk containing all the right ingredients, and the French duo's own special sauce mixed into the pot for good measure.

With a decades worth of collaboration behind them, and persistent party rocking at festivals and clubs, Souleance continue to create tried & tested moments of sweetness on dancefloors across the globe. This three-tracker is no exception, and makes this another essential one for the record bags.

As well as the recent single "François / Sète" (both included), we have 25 new tracks dedicated to all things Français. This mixtape opus is a true labour of love; A French voyage through time and genres, as Soulist and FULGEANCE like to do. Each track is purposefully named after various French clichés; characteristics, phrases and places. You’ll excuse our French, and check those out for yourselves..
"French Cassette" is comprised of an array of noises from various French composers; from boogie, to jazz, to sound libraries, to chansons. Cinematically sultry sounds, with a lot of funk; where Brigitte Fontaine meets François de Roubaix in a back alley somewhere near the film set of "Calmos", whilst pumping out the soundtrack to La Haine. 
A little moody, a little sexy, a little rough around the edges.
Whilst the film noir-esque interludes accentuate the theme, Souleance’s unmistakable grooves ride throughout, with a symphony of synths and scratches, beats and basslines. This is undeniably, unashamedly a celebration. Boom bap and breaks, all flavoured with a healthy layer of “je ne sais quoi”.
The first single received love from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Tom Ravenscroft, Jazzanova, Huey Morgan, Bill Brewster, Kev Beadle, Hector Plimmer, Red Rack'em (Rinse FM), Thristian (Worldwide FM) and Chris P Cuts (NTS). Following on from the success of their debut LP 'La Belle Vie' from earlier this year, the French duo have been busy in the studio producing La Beat Tape. 20 tracks deep, the release is aimed squarely at the DJs, with a succession of guaranteed party-starters. This is rounded out with some typically quirky interludes, jazzy beat excursions and blissed out trip hop.
Souleance are producer Fulgeance (Musique Large / One Handed Music) and DJ Soulist (What The Funk Paris?). Since releasing their debut EP (Le Monde) back in 2009, they have built a solid reputation for their idiosyncratic take on modern beats. With fans including Gilles Peterson, Danny Breaks, Lefto and Mr Thing, their debut album was the culmination of 3 years of beat-making, touring, partying and drinking too much Pimms. Shuffling around the 110bpm mark, this piano-lead piece has an almost latin jazz feel in places, accompanied by a hefty bassline, assorted synths and subtle scratches riding atop of a disco-tinged 4/4 beat. A groove marinated in nostalgia whilst managing to sound current, this is another dance-floor sure-shot from the French crew.

Worldwide Award winners First Word Records are pleased to welcome back Souleance; a duo that have been releasing music with us for a decade now, and triumphantly returning to the fold with some brand new music for 2020.

Expanding on the original Normand-Parisian super-duo of Fulgeance and Soulist, the Souleance crew now includes Vincent Choquet on synths and Guillaume Rossel on drums as part of their live outfit. Whilst sonically their style remains unchanged, the formation into a full band sees the Souleance sound become bigger, more realised and more formidable than ever.

The title track 'Les Mouches' sets off the EP in a playful disco manner - a chugging bassline, assorted synthesisers, disco claps and a four-to-the-floor drum track, inspired by the likes of Larry Levan and Candido. Meaning "flies", Les Mouches was a legendary Manhattan club that existed around the era of Studio 54, and was infamously a hangout spot for Imelda Marcos. The club itself was named after a play by Jean-Paul Sartre.

Next up is the single 'Aquarelle' (meaning watercolours), which contains more layers than a Bob Ross painting. With its various elements splayed across its aural canvas, sprinkled with...  more

SOULEANCE is the result of the partnership between the talented
producer Fulgeance and DJ Soulist of What The Funk.
Fulgeance is one of the artist belonging to the French label "Musique Large". Leading and managing several projects (Claude or Fulgeance solo...), this talented producer and remixer is well known for his devastating beats and his stunning live performances. Focused on hypnotic and electronic Hip Hop, Fulgeance subtletly mixes his different influences in order to extracte a "Low Club" groove, anthem and hit track of his last EP at Musique Large.
SOULIST our « démagogue » French funky president, is known in paris for electic sets and is the creator and resident Dj of the Paris' night events What the Funk, which sixth anniversary has just been celebrated. Disco, Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, latin music as an obsession, his mixes have met numerous artists and reknown DJs, such as Cut Chemist, Keb Darge, Dj Vadim, Quantic, DJ Numark, Dudley Perkins, Madlib, Pilooski .
Soulist and Fulgeance met in 2006 while performing and have decided from then to work together on a new project called « Souleance ».... This project is the mixture of Soulist's organic influences and Fulgeance producer 's know how and malice.
An uncomplex project mostly inspired by Black Music which sums up several energies, rythms and beats such as hip hop, tropical, breaks or funky 80’s-boogie- disco style.
Playlisted by Gilles Peterson, Laurent Garnier, LeftO with their Eps "Le Monde" & "Soupape" or "Le Plaisir 7inch" signed on UK label First Word Records their music and explosive live shows have travelled around the world these last two years : Zouk in Singapore, GP's Worldwide Festival in Sète, Nuits Sonores in Lyon, Lodz Kaliska in Krakow, Jazz Café in London, Satta Outside-Lithuania...
They also shared stages with Quantic, Gilles Peterson, General Elektrik, Kentaro, Amp Fiddler, Breakestra, Dj Cam, Benga and more...
Souleance's albums « La Belle Vie » & « La Beat Tape » also released on First Word Records were really welcome by french and worldwide press (Nova, XLR8R, Bonafide, Clash, ...)
