A reworking of the CHico classic from his Nomad album.  Totally redone with Chico's beautiful drums, which he was gracious enough to go into the studio and reacord for us.  Real strings by the amazing Christian Howe.   Stephanie McKay, Wendy Starland and Ansel Matthews provide the lush vocals. Check the lap steel guitar of Matt Smith, the smooth sinuous bass of Serge Brandao and the wonderful percussion spread of Jose Claussell.   Bennett Paster's rhodes takes this into Ramsey Lewis' Sun Goddess territory.  This special unreleased mix with Joe running it down old school with his magical mutes 'straight from the board in a live mixdown' has never been released .  Enjoy!

The music of Huddie Ledbetter, better known to the world as Lead Belly, is some of the initial sounds that introduced African American music to the world at large. The presentation of this singular artist changed the way the public heard music and shifted the dynamics in what was soon to come in the music industry, namely the adoption and promotion of Black music as a valuable commodity.

There are reasons aplenty for the music listening population’s attention being swayed by Lead Belly. The songs that he sang were appealingly forthright and uncomplicated. His voice and powerful 12-string guitar were strong and enticing. Because of his magnetism, Lead Belly’s music remains a touchstone in blues’s evolution into rock, soul and jazz music. 

Two years ago, Sunnyside released drummer Adam Nussbaum’s first true recording as a leader, and fantastic tribute to one of his idols, The Lead Belly Project. Nussbaum’s band of saxophonist Ohad Talmor and dual guitarists, Steve Cardenas and Nate Radley, ably channeled a program of Lead Belly tunes chosen by the leader, mainly culled from the Folkway Recordings 10-inch records Nussbaum grew up listening to. The project allowed Nussbaum to show another side of his musical character that he hadn’t previously been able to showcase regularly during his remarkable forty-year career. 

The ensuing years allowed Nussbaum and company to tour both in the United States and Europe. The group’s incredible chemistry was only heightened by their extended time together. Their program was also expanded as Nussbaum encouraged the others to investigate Lead Belly’s catalog and bring in pieces that they felt would fit within their balance of lyricism and adventurousness. 

Nussbaum’s trust in these incredible musicians and their efforts made it easy for them to fully express the meaning in these pieces without any complicated intentions. The roles between the members of the ensemble were fluid and balanced, the only requirement of the guitarists remained to spread out from one another and avoid doing the same thing. 

In July of 2019, Nussbam and the ensemble returned to Talmor’s home studio, Seeds, in Brooklyn. They recorded with no separation between the musicians and entirely live. The musicians’ comfort with the material and each other can be heard in the results, as the pieces have an emotional intimacy that goes beyond their prior efforts. The result of these recordings can be heard on their new album, Lead Belly Reimagined.

SoulFeast Music is a joint Production and label venture initiated by producers Brian Michel Bacchus &  Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell.  SoulFeast is also a Soulful and Cathartic production entity for Dance Music production and presentation that incorporates the skills of these two Iconoclasts with other like minds in the Undergound Dance Music community.       In 1997, Blue Note Records was looking for an A&R man and was able to coax Brian Michel Bacchus into accepting a position that lasted four fruitful years. More importantly as to the formative chemistry behind SoulFeast, he enlisted friend and cohort Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell to remix several classic tracks by Blue Note artists Cassandra Wilson (Run The Vodou Down & You Don't Know What Love Is), Ronny Jordan (London Lowdown), The Wild Magnolias (Battlefield) and Salif Keita (Tolon Willie).  Claussell also enlisted Bacchus to co-produce 2 Tracks with him of Japanese artist Monday Michiru (Chasing After The Sun & Mysteries Of Life) for her 4 Seasons project on Polydor KK. Bacchus' parting gift to Blue Note was the signing and A&Ring of Norah Jones' Come Away With Me, which went on to garner 8 Grammy Awards. On the heels of this runaway success & the crumbling of the Twin Towers, Bacchus finally escaped the major label Ball & Chain and left Blue Note to pursue independent production again. The first person who called was Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell, who suggested they form a separate production co-venture.  And so SoulFeast was born! Mixes by SoulFeast include the Afro-Brazilian jam "Manhattan" by Eliane Elias, "For Fun" & "Universe" by Rh Factor [Nominated For A Grammy] and "One Day (My Love)" by N’Dea Davenport, "African Lady" By Somi, "Life Is Real" and "Down On My Knees" by Ayo and an ongoing series of collaborations with legendary drummer Chico Hamilton ("I’m Still Thirsty", "Magical Maiden") called Alternative Dimensions.  
        
      Besides working as SoulFeast, both Brian Michel Bacchus and Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell each produce music under their own names and entities.  Bacchus  as Brian Bacchus still works as an independent producer for various artists (Gregory Porter, Lizz Wright, Allan Harris, Sarah McKenzie, Richie Havens, Janis Siegel, Sullivan Fortner, Brian Owens, Quiana Lynell, Matthew Whitaker,  to name a few) and Claussell has several imprints (Sacred Rhythm, Spiritual Life Music, and Mental Remedy) that he releases music under.  He is also in constant demand as a producer and remixer as well as a cosmic DJ in the US and overseas(Body & Soul, Sacred Rhythm, Cosmic Arts)and has opened a new venture in Brooklyn, Cosmic Arts.
