A compilation of some of my favourite Dilla beats which I have compiled in remembrance of the grand master of beats. SOULfisticated will be doing an event in tribute of the great James Dilla Yancey aka J Dilla on Fri 4th Feb @ Kumo Bar in Knightsbridge London.

This Mix features some of Dilla's finest work from instrumentals, to unreleased projects and collaborations with the likes of Brand New Heavies, Q Tip, Natives Of The Underground, Madlib, &amp; Keith Murray just to name a few.

J Dilla has been a heavy influence in my life so its an honour mixing some of my favourite pieces that he built into this mix.

Welcome to the 4th edition of our radio series - "The Roots of Neo Soul" 

For a long time we wanted to pay homage to those guys that influenced the sound we now call Neo Soul/Nu Soul. So we have decided to start a guest mix series from some of our favourite DJs/Friends from near and far, First up is someone who we most certainly admire, hailing from London UK this DJ has the most amount of respect amongst the heads within the scene. DJ BEMI part of the alternative soul collective known as Amplified. Kicking off the 2014 with SOULfisticated Radio, for those who didnt get our end of year guest mix from DJ Bemi please be sure to check that out on our page.

So we found some more stuff from Dilla :) I know we say it every year but seriously its like the music is never ending, We had to create another playlist for next year as we couldnt fit everything on to this mix. 

Anyway there was a touching interview with this guy that found all his old collection with some unreleased beat tapes that J Dilla's mum plans on releasing as times goes on. I managed to cop the 12 inch of instrumentals that was released on Moodymans Mahogony music last year.. and yes there was stuff on there I never heard. 

J Dillas legacy lives on and we are still very much big fans and in love with his music. 

On this day in history we lost a musical genius, but he continues to live through his work.. you may have been dancing or nodding your head to his music without realising who he is. His name is James Yancey aka J Dilla 7/02/1974 - 10/02/2006 R.I.P

Hope all is well guys, we have a special treat for you.. A while ago (a real long while ago) we asked a friend of ours to compile and do a mix for us. Its only taken him almost a year but as they say better late than never. 

We introduce you to James Spinx. Now the guys we ask for mixes have been vetted throughly and we been hanging with Spinx for a while on the circuit and believe me he's a real music nut and all round nice guy. 

Anyway we asked him some questions to support his guest mix check them out and look him up... I am sure you will enjoy this mix as much as we did :)

How did you get into DJing?

It all started with Drum & Bass! Got my first pair of decks when I was 13 because my friend had some and I wanted to be like him. I've always played music and it seemed like the coolest way of doing it when I reached my teens.

What's your preferred style/genre?

I tend to go across the board when I play out as I normally do longer sets, but if I had to pin down one specific genre it would probably be disco!

Influences? 

DJ-wise I get a lot of influence from people like Maurice Fulton & DJ Harvey, although I worked with Mr. Scruff last year and he was really good.. Effortless cross-genre selection and you can tell he loves what he does.

What are you listening to at current?

It depends what mood I'm in and there's so much music out there! But I'm really digging Electric Wire Hustle's stuff at the moment. Fatima & the Eglo bunch are putting out some great music too. I also don't seem to be able to go through a gig without playing something by Eric Lau.

Vinyl or Digital?

I'm pretty much all vinyl. I love having a physical copy of the music with artwork etc.. The possibilities of digital are far greater and some people get really creative, but to me vinyl is special as it requires more effort than playing digitally, naturally making you choose your tunes more carefully. I'm not a purist and at the end of the day it's all about the music! But I don't think I'll ever stop buying records.

What's the concept behind the mix?

There's not really a 'concept' per se, just to string together some of the tunes I love to play. I never really plan mixes or sets when I play and find it easier to go with the flow

2 x Technics 1210 Mk5's, an Ecler Nuo 4.0 Mixer, a big bag of records and a cup of Yorkshire Tea

Aside from music what are your other interests?

I love snowboarding although I haven't been in ages and I'm not that good at it..! I also love cooking, good films and bad jokes.

2015 has been an amazing year for music across the board. We're pretty much into a lot of music and the taste bud satisfaction has been well and truly met. Really excited for 2016 as this has been the strongest year for music for a long time... Have you guy's heard Kendricks 'to pimp a butterfly' album?....!!! If not WOW... thats defo up there in top LPs for the year, and of course we included one of those joints in the mix :)

Whats good peeps, 

I know these podcasts come only once in a while but its been a fun year, with loads of music from some real talented music heads from around the globe both underground & established artists.
For SOULfisticated this year has been an interesting 2011.  We had the opportunity of flying out to Hamburg & DJing with the guys from Nu Soul city, which was an amazing experience. Germany rocked & for once the rumours were true, these guys really do know their music.

Its also has been a very challenging year in terms of securing a venue for our Neo Soul night, but the nights we've had so far have been real nice. We hope 2012 will be more promising & we hope to do a lot more in the capital as well as collaborating with other music heads.

Struggling to find a name for this podcast I’ve decided to entitle this episode simply SOULfisticated2011.

So its been a while since our last upload... well you know how it can be sometimes good music can take time to compile :)  So really enjoyed putting this one together included a bunch of unreleased heat and some forgotten gems. 

Music from the likes of TE1 Productions, Kendrick Lamar, Shafiq Husayn, Sa Ra, Tone Trezure, Dilla, Munshine, Da Bush Babies, Jahi, Dwele, Steve Spacek, Teresa Jenee, Hanna, Deborah Jordan, Kaidi Tatham, Dego, Velben, Zaniska, Seiji, Amy Winehouse, Jay Simon, & Loads more 

We also caught up with good friend TE1 Productions who was kind enough to give us some special unreleased joints which has been featured in this mix... Please watch out for new material from this guy he's worked with the likes of Restless Soul, Kyza, Miles Bonny and countless others, We've featured his music before and we think hes one of UK's finest. 

Also we was asked by Moovmnt to do a guest mix a couple months back so we will upload that in a few weeks so that will make up for the waiting time :)

For those that were fortunate to go to the legendary Co op nights down at Plastic People in London & the Zinc nights on a Sunday in Birmingham will know the energy this music brings
