"Sony Music Entertainment sent a cease and desist letter to Amerigo Gazaway concerning its album ''A Bizarre Tribe: A Quest to the Pharcyde," alleging among other things that this album incorporated sound recordings owned by Sony Music, including sound recordings which embody the musical performances of A Tribe Called Quest, without Sony Music's authorization. Amerigo Gazaway has denied any infringement and maintains that the Bizarre Tribe album is protected as fair use. The parties have reached a confidential settlement wherein Amerigo Gazaway has agreed to cease and desist from using, exploiting, distributing and selling the Bizarre Tribe album."

He was doing a lot of what we do now, in terms of looping and pulling samples from other pre-recorded sessions decades before hip-hop made it common practice to do so. This also gave me the room to feature other artist [Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Talib, etc.] and re-present those classic Mos [Def] versus in a new context."

This time around, Amerigo takes on James Brown in The Big Payback Vol lll. In the third and latest offering from "The Big Payback" summer mix series, the producer follows the exceptionally awesome first and second volumes from the legendary DJ Scratch and master craftsman, J. Period.  

Bringing together a fantasy league of all-stars for his "J.B. and The Soul Mates" tribute concept, the producer's latest offers an alternative to the sometimes uninspired, profit-driven, posthumously released albums. 

With guest appearances from Bob Marley, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Fela Kuti, The Notorious B.I.G., Mobb Deep, and more, Amerigo pays tribute to the God Father of Soul with a re-imagined set of co-conspirators.

"I'm not sure any other artist has left their imprint on popular music, especially across so many genres, as much as James Brown has.  With as many of today's hit songs that were built around some sort of James Brown flip, it's almost like he had a say in what the music of future generations would sound like without even knowing it."

We are one week away from the release of Amerigo Gazaway's B.B. King/UGK reimagining, "B.B. & The Underground Kingz: The Trill is Gone," and have a brand new single to share. 

Written by Willie Dixon and originally performed by Muddy Waters, "I Just Wanna Make Love to You" was popularized by the likes of B.B. King, Etta James, and The Rolling Stones. Reinterpreting King's version as a collaborative effort with UGK, Gazaway incorporated B.B.'s samples while making use of Pimp C & Bun B's "Ride [F*ck]My Car" vocals.

B.B. & The Underground Kingz - Make Love To My Car

With our latest Soul Mates Project release, fittingly titled "A Common Wonder," Amerigo Gazaway brings to life an imagined studio session between Chicago's crowned prince of Hip-Hop, Common, and Motown legend, Stevie Wonder.

A return to the Soul meets Hip-Hop formula of his Marvin Gaye + Mos Def pairing “Yasiin Gaye,” Gazaway connects the dots between Hip-Hop and the genre’s predecessor with a musical history lesson told through the intersecting themes of Common and Stevie’s respective catalogues. As Gazaway put it:

“Stevie Wonder’s early use of synthesizers, drum machines, and samplers, in a lot of ways, paved the way for hip-hop and sampling. Part of my motivation for this project was to highlight those contributions”

Picking up where Common and Stevie’s 2016 “Black America Again,” single left off, Amerigo brings his imagined recording session to life with a slew of uncovered resources (including multitrack instrument stems, interview audio, and documentary soundbites.) Re-orchestrating deconstructed samples, the producer interweaves Common’s vivid wordplay and Wonder’s passionate vocals for a project that blurs the line between a “mashup” and a modern day duets album.
