This selection is what I personally consider the pinnacle of DnB music. If your track is not listed here it doesn't necessarily mean it is not good. The problem is, there's too much awesome DnB music out there and I had to make choices. In the back of my mind, I also wanted lesser known artists and labels to be recognized. Also check out my other DnB (Reference/Master Class)playlists. Chances are high that your track is listed in one of those ;) Side note: I wouldn't be exaggerating if I would say I have scanned through aprox. 10.000 DnB tracks just to come up with these 8 Reference Class playlists ! DnB Reference Class Pt 5 aka Mindfunk

Brighton-based producer Silloh, real name Hugo Hollis, returns to Soulvent with a bass heavy 2-track single in the form of ‘The Conqueror’. Initially releasing on the first edition of our ‘Tonics’ series back in May, Hugo’s productions are beginning to garner support from some well-respected tastemakers including the much loved Break, who released Silloh’s second release on his own Symmetry Recordings with ‘Fields of Green’.  

Opener ‘The Conqueror’ stakes its claim with playful pops of tuned percussion and big drums setting the tone. Robotic, processed vocals take centre stage leading in a sense of dread while the drop ushers in menacing sonics for a truly deep, dark and gully experience on this heavy- duty creeper.

Sharing its name with both a Hollywood classic and an unfortunate neck injury, ‘Whiplash’ promises to induce strong and sudden head-nodding upon first listen. An unsettling atmosphere begins to develop with eerie, spacey pads atop a tight drum break - which quickly descend into a deep, driving bassline. This powerful momentum is complemented by a growing resonance in the synth, which is met with satisfying splashes of amen and warped vocals.  

With boths cuts landing Friday 11th November, we keenly await Silloh’s domination of the dance as ‘The Conqueror / Whiplash’ is ready to be whipped out and lashed on speakers worldwide, across all major digital platforms and streaming services.

Motiv - Crave (Vektah Remix)

Japanese DJ & producer Mountain, real name Shigeta Kamiyama, is an exciting prospect in the world of dance music who is preparing to release his self-titled debut album on Soulvent Records. Residing in the port city of Osaka, some 5000+ miles from London, Shigeta’s music has always encapsulated and reflected the frenetic energy of busy cities, with a playful exuberance that is all his own. Mountain explores his love for drum & bass, with a firm focus on the high-energy dancefloor sound that he has become known for, although the album explores dark, liquid, pop, funk and jazz influences throughout. Expect a myriad of sounds, including collaborations with Makoto, Ruth Royall and label mates In:Most amongst others!

The first glimpse of his high-octane brand of d&b came in 2018 with his debut release ‘Overheat’ on Soulvent Records, which saw early support from Rene La Vice on BBC Radio 1. He has since garnered releases on an extensive list of well respected musical outlets, including Hospital, RAM, Liquicity and Viper to name just a few. After hearing the consistency and energy that permeate every piece of music Mountain turns his hand to, Soulvent simply had to give him a debut album! And so it brings us immense joy to present the playfully-edged aural assault course that is Mountain’s self-titled, 14-track masterpiece. 

‘I’m Free’ first saw release in 2021 with Mountain teaming up with the burgeoning talent that is Kojo, who also featured on Pola & Bryson’s ‘Beneath The Surface’ in the same year. The intro sees Kojo rally the congregation before the church organ will have you closing your eyes and raising your palms to the sky. Meanwhile ‘Passenger’ sees Mountain collaborate with fellow label mates In:Most for the first time, resulting in a powerful, driving bassline that would ease the mundanity of any commute imaginable. Other notable collaborations include ‘Delorean Dreams' which sees Mountain team up with the most notable Japanese drum & bass producer of the last 3 decades, Makoto, and ‘I’ll Be Waiting’ - a good old fashioned love song featuring none other than Bristol’s first lady Ruth Royall. 

Forthcoming single ‘Sahara’ is an oxymoron, as the rich array of sonic elements on display couldn’t be further from the barren nature of the desert. With a chance to hear something new every time you listen, the intricate percussion leaves room for the lush synth and string play to please the ear. ‘Overload’ sees Mountain reprise the hallmark electric guitar for a high-octane journey through his rock music influences, resulting in a genre-spanning track that exhibits Mountain’s range as a producer. ‘Electric Girl’ strums itself to life with bright harmonics and uplifting pads which drop straight into a rising synth pattern and thrumming bassline. Electro sensibilities are pit against Shigeta’s signature playful guitars and a spacey counter-melody providing big dancefloor energy. 

Mountain’s self-titled debut album offers a brief glimpse into the young producer’s varied and unique sound, and the start of a fruitful career as an album artist. Blending a mix of varied influences with a unique, scrupulous approach and a deep respect for the culture, we can’t wait to hear what is round the corner for this Japanese powerhouse producer. Sample the dizzying heights of this mountainous debut, landing in all stores on the 4th of March!

This EP is the result of a long-standing creative exchange between ArpXP and Was A Be – a process that unfolded over the years in a spontaneous, unstructured way, capturing the spirit of the moment rather than following a rigid plan.

These tracks are not the pair’s first collaborations; the two artists have been close friends for many years. Each piece was born in different circumstances and under different inspirations, but they evolved gradually, reshaped and fine-tuned through countless tests on the dancefloor.

ArpXP is among the first Italian DJs and producers to break into the international drum & bass circuit. Since the early 2000s, first with his project S.M.O.K.E. and later as a solo artist, he has released on iconic imprints such as Metalheadz and many more. He is also one of the driving forces behind the renowned SUNANDBASS Festival, where he curates the label SUNANDBASS Recordings.

Was A Be, meanwhile, has established himself as one of the most influential figures in the Italian scene. Known for his eclectic and boundary-pushing style, he has released music on some of the most respected labels in the game, including Subtitles, Critical, Shogun, Gutterfunk and Neosignal.

Aaron Payne & Frank H Carter III - Requisition

Next up on Intrigue comes Conrad Subs, a name that needs little introduction in today’s Drum & Bass scene. With releases on cornerstone imprints like Metalheadz, Hospital, Ram, Symmetry, 31 Records, Liquid V, and Dread, his catalogue already reads like a who’s who of the genre. This release marks his first appearance on Intrigue, and it’s one that’s been doing serious damage in Ben Soundscape’s sets for months.

‘Overrated’ sees Conrad team up with Collette Warren for a vocal gem that blends rich soul with heavyweight low-end pressure. Collette’s smooth, expressive delivery glides over the rolling groove, creating a track that feels both timeless and instantly infectious.

Flipping the vibe, ‘Heart Rate Rising’ dives into a deeper, old skool inspired sound. Crisp breaks, moody pads, and classic energy combine to capture that raw essence that first drew so many of us into Drum & Bass.

I am breathing electronic music since late 70s and that's over 45 years now. From Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre, Mike Oldfield, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Yazoo, Alphaville, Men without Hats, Nitzer Ebb, Die Krupps, Front 242, Anne Clark, Camouflage, Gary Numan, OMD, Apopytygma Berzerk and even the Commodore 64 demo & break dance scene to more contemporary Electronic music artists, I witnessed the evolution of Electronic music, which basically means I am an old fart and consider myself an authority in this music genre 😵 Currently I listen DnB almost exclusively. But I do not like to restrict myself at all, enjoying flavors like Electronica, Trance, Psytrance, Tech House, Dubstep, Deep House, Future Pop, Trap, Techno, UK Bass and of course EBM/Industrial as well.

What you will find in my likes and playlists is the top of the crop in Electronic Music, I will  absolutely not list any bullshit. A track I have not listed might be just that: Bullshit, just mediocre or an artistic gem which I haven't discovered yet.
