Birds and cicadas singing in a mature forest on Palawan island

Recorded in October 1995 within the Gamba Reserve Complex, near the village of Sounga in Gabon, Central Africa. Recorded onto DAT with two Crown PZM mics placed ~35' apart (for playback in the western lowland gorilla exhibit at the Cincinnati Zoo &amp; Botanical Garden). As my footsteps disappear into the forest, listen to the symphony of sound build, from just a few soloists to the entire orchestra. Also listen for the "whoosh- whoosh-whoosh-WHOOOOOOOOSH" of a pair of hornbills flying in.


Near Sounga Village- Gamba Reserve, Gabon, Central Africa- 1995 (long)

Life abounds in the exotic and beautiful rainforests of Sulawesi - one of the largest islands in the Indonesian archipeligo. Here time has stood still, revealing the evolution of nature through a unique diversity of birds and animals.

In humid lowlands we hear fruit pigeons, orioles, monarch flycatchers and a magnificent pair of hornills. Further inland, hill forests reach deep into the remote heart of the island. The booming calls of imperial pigeons carry across the valleys, squirrels call from high in the canopy and the eerie voices of piping crows echo through the forests.

We climb high into the mountains, the realm of the cloud forests. Flocks of birds move through the forest calling in the morning sunshine. Finally, night falls on a land where mystery and the unusual are everywhere - Sulawesi.

Kubah's forests are pulsing with life, and the soundscapes that can be heard in this national Park are among the most incredible I have ever experienced. This recording features the incredibly powerful sounds of Empress cicadas, along with the melodic song of the White-rumped Shama, and the rhythmic ' te-hoop 'calls of Golden-whiskered Barbets.

There in the project I am just listener and commentateur.

My name is Stan Rullman and I serve as the Director of Research for Earthwatch Institute. I have been involved in recording the sounds of the natural world for over 30 years, and more recently became interested in the analysis of soundscapes and using audio as a tool for assessing species presence on the landscape. In 2019, I participated in the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Sound Analysis Workshop, and highly recommend that program for those interested in a more scientific approach to sound analysis.
