(…) Also before on Extreme has been a release by Claudio Parodi, who back then (Vital Weekly 553) paid homage to Alvin Lucier. Here the bowing goes to Pauline Oliveros and her deep listening music. Parodi plays turkish clarinet for that in a three part (the third includes a coda) work. On this instrument he plays a few lines, which are continuously repeated and layered, but he brings in small variations to the scheme every now and then, like a variety of loops being played. Below this he adds a most curious blend of hard to define sounds - field recordings perhaps, scratching the surface or highly reverbed spaces - its pretty far away in the mix of the Turkish clarinet, so virtually not possible to scan this out. It sounds quite nice as a background, and the solemnly played instrument makes this almost like a requiem piece. Like the Lucier homage this is also a consistent work. Very nice again. Musicien génois impliqué dans les musiques improvisées depuis près de 25 ans, Claudio PARODI est principalement pianiste, mais joue occasionnellement de la clarinette turque, et travaille aussi à partir de bandes magnétiques et d'instruments électroniques. Si ses productions personnelles sont essentiellement parues sur le label Extrême (parmi lesquelles des œuvres en hommage à Alvin Lucier ou Pauline Oliveros), il a eu l'occasion de se produire avec nombre de partenaires, parmi lesquels Lê Quan Ninh, Adrian Northover, Michel Doneda, la Fanfare de la Touffe. Heavy Nichel, qu'il présente comme étant le premier volet d'une série intitulée Sound is my shelter (le son est mon refuge) dans laquelle il souhaite à chaque fois proposer son travail avec un instrument spécifique, est dédié à la clarinette turque. Surtout utilisée dans le contexte des musiques traditionnelles, cette clarinette est accordée en sol, et offres des quarts de ton. Dans le quatre plages, entre une douzaine et dix-huit minutes chacune, que comporte cet enregistrement réalisé en février 2012 à Gênes, Claudio PARODI explore le différentes approches d'un instrument certes peu usité dans les réseaux habituels de la musique improvisée, mais dont les sonorités ne surprennent pas vraiment, dans la mesure où l'on peut parfois les entendre dans l'improvisation libre avec une clarinette classique. Le voyage sonore qu'il propose, qui côtoie aussi quelques références ethniques, est toutefois intéressant par sa variété.

Sound is my shelter is an ongoing series of recordings of solo improvisations, in which I will employ one by one all the instruments I can play. Who knows me personally knows that I’m continuously buying instruments, in order to find new tools to express my own music. To give you an example, on the same day of the editing and mastering of this CD, I bought a soprano saxophone. Likely, this series will never see an end. The only rule I will follow is to record when the kairos (ancient Greek for “the right moment”) has come, in terms of practising and reflecting.

Heavy Nichel is the complete recording of a performance in studio. Tracks were put in order to have a more comfortable listening; anyway, as there is no pause in between the tracks, continuous listening is possible.

A special thanks to Thomas Buckner, who suggested the title of this CD long time before it was even thought about.

One of my favourite walk is in the harbour of my hometown, because of the sound brought by the wind. For long time I have day-dreamt about including that sound in my own music. I got to the point reading the poem Prologo al buio by Erri De Luca (from Opera sull'Acqua e altre poesie, Einaudi 2002). In the poem there is a Hebraic quote from Genesis, before the third verse (hence the title of my composition, the Italian for "before the third"): "vrúah Elohím merahèfet al penè hammàim", that means, translating from the Italian translation by De Luca, "and the wind of God breaths on the faces of the waters". The music was already there, it was just a matter of recording it.
Nothing against pure field recording. But, as the inspiration came from the very root of Hebrew culture, I felt to go deeper. My dear friend Prof. Maria Rosa Montiani taught me everything of the very little I know about Hebrew culture.
I planned five field recordings, one for each Hebrew word (in Hebrew, "al penè" is written as a single word). Referring to the map of the harbor, the recorder was placed five times from top right to bottom left, imitating the direction of Hebraic writing. The date and the length of the field recordings were chosen following the value given by qabbaláh to each word. As an example, vrúah is 4, so the first field recording (four minutes plus two seconds fade in and two seconds fade out) happened on the fourth hour of the fourth day of Cheshvàn, the second month of Hebrew calendar, that is, on October the 20th, 2012, 23.16, and so on for five months.
The field recordings were later re-shaped in studio imitating the Ashkenaze ductus of the letters of the words: panning for left to right and reverb to no reverb for top to bottom.

CLAUDIO PARODI -  A TREE, AT NIGHT (CD by LUSCINIA DISOCS)

Claudio Parodi is an Italian composer, sound artist, improviser and multi-instrumentalist. He made 
very different statements up till now. I remember a solo album, ‘Heavy Nichel’  for solo clarinet  
for Creative Sources. Another one,  ‘Prima del Torzo’ (2015), had a prominent role for field 
recordings. This time Parodi  made a very vocal- and text-oriented work.  Knowledge of the Italian 
language is essential for this work, built around spoken word as it is mainly spoken in Italian, 
besides a bit in English. Text and music are by Parodi. In all nine tracks Parodi plays thumb piano 
and shakers, evoking African atmospheres. The vocals come from Luigi Marangoni and Bobby Soul – 
artist name for Alberto de Benedetti, plus a few guest appearances. The voice of Marangoni is 
most of the time in the forefront, reading a story. In the background we hear Bobby Soul, singing 
in a gospel and soul inspired way, repeating short English phrases. It is a minimalistic work that 
Parodi offers here, that moves somewhere between music and radio play or ‘Hörspiel’. Although I 
didn’t understand a bit, there is some hypnotic magic in this work that affected me and made me 
forget what it is all about. Especially where Parodi makes layers of spoken and sung vocals, he 
celebrates the beauty and expressiveness of the human voice. A plain narrative work. “The 
relocation in a new house is the excuse to make a portrait of the new neighbourhood which is a 
mirror of a part of the country and a social reflection as our cities became empty as book shops 
and cinemas close”. A work of clear vision and inspired execution. (Dolf Mulder)

CLAUDIO PARODI – RIGHT ERROR (USB/CD by Migro)

This new release by Parodi comes as a limited USB ‘Circuit Board CD’ release of 100 copies, released 
by Migro, a label specialized in releasing works by composers and improvisers who are into exploring 
new concepts. The USB-stick encloses the sound work in three different audio formats: stereo, 
binaural and quadraphonic with various accompanying texts, visuals and pcb files added. Well, what 
is form and what is content concerning this work? What is this release about? Parodi, a classical 
trained pianist, develops and shapes his ideas and talents in many different directions. One of them 
is his love for self-built electronics. For example, for Extreme he recorded ‘The Mother of all 
Feedback’, that had him playing feedback modulators, etc. His release ‘Right Error’ belongs also in 
this category. Parodi took inspiration from Thelonious Monk, the great jazz pianist, famous for his 
so-called ‘wrong notes’. There is a story of Monk being dissatisfied after a concert because he 
played the wrong errors. Not the errors he intended and hoped to play. So one can also speak of 
right errors. A clear example of how musicians play with conventions and expectations, in order to 
create new music. In this project Parodi constructs a sonic work starting from a ‘right error’. “The 
right error was produced by a Schoeps CMC6 MK4 microphone during a recording session. Listening 
to the recording, at the very beginning a noise appeared, though no sound was yet played”, Parodi 
states. A noise appeared out of nothing. This original error was stretched out in time following a 
binary transcription of the text of Monk’s ‘Round Midnight’, his most famous composition. With 
text, Parodi means the lyrics - I suppose - that were written later and not by Monk himself. This 
shows Parodi works on a conceptual level, following a minimalistic approach. Not sure, what 
element Parodi abstracted from the text. Probably length as, as the sound sequences differ in 
length, as does the silence in between. The result sounds as some exceptional sequence of sounds 
from outer space, suggesting there is some logic or intelligence behind it. Not just random noise, 
but somehow organized. Parodi organized this sound work into five parts, called ‘Right Error Part 
1’, up to ‘Right Error 5’ and composed it for an eight loudspeakers sound system. In each part 
sound and silences are grouped differently. There are changes in dynamic, modulation and length. 
There is no linear, narrative progression. The work abstracts from almost all ingredients that 
normally expect from music and even sound works. If ‘organized sound’ is your preferred definition 
of music, this creation by Parodi will sound ‘as’ music into your ears. But whatever your definition 
and understanding – emotional, cognitive, etc. – of music and sound may be, a meeting with an 
avant garde work like this for sure is in interesting one. Provoking questions about our listening

Mother of Feedback (self-modified electronics) solo

Mother of Feedback name is due to her being the first feedback modulator which entered in my Cheap Electronics instrumentation. Having an open microphone, every sound event deeply influenced her sound, so I was in a way obliged to play her always at maximum volume, as a sound exclamation. Now Cheap Electronics seem to be gone, so I gave her the opportunity to express all the nuances she is able to put out. I recorded a studio performance of about one our, from which I carefully distilled the tracks of A Room.

Recorded live in a club in Genova, Italia by Paolo Valenti on January 25th, 2006. Cardioid microphone BPMCR73 on Feedback, two panoramic microphone OKTAVA MK 012 for ambient, direct to hard disk. Mastering by Claudio Parodi and Paolo Valenti at Loud Music Studio, Genova, Italia on March 17th, 2006.
During mastering, the level was put at +2db and Waves L2 threshold -6.0 output -0.2 was used. Tracks (by Claudio Parodi and Paolo Valenti at Loud Music Studio, on November 28th, 2007) were put in order to have a more comfortable listening; anyway, as there is no pause in between the tracks, continuous listening is possible.

L’Assedio

17 – L’Assedio   20’39”

L’Assedio is a study about building the space and the feeling of a medieval siege. I overdubbed four improvisations on Feedback recorded by five microphones. One was on my amplifier; the other four were close to the walls of the room. In front of me a microphone with a very very very long reverb – it was the future, when you are under a siege the future seems unreachable. At my right a microphone with flanger – it was the water, a shelter. At my left a microphone close to a metal resonator – the external attack. For takes three and four these two latter microphones ware put in a specular way, in order to preserve the symmetry. The microphone behind my back was the memory, it was used to take samples which the sound engineer was free to insert in the recordings. During the recordings the sound engineer was free to choose or mix the microphones. I had no knowledge about what was going on at the mixing desk.
