With this record, The Como Mamas join forces with the boys of Menahan Street Band (billed pseudonymously here as The Radiant Rhythm Band) to lay bare the funkier side of gospel music. 

“The rhythms we all play were already right there in their vocals,” explains drummer Homer Steinweiss, “so it felt natural to lay down the grooves behind them.” Thomas “T-N-T” Brenneck, the up-and-coming producer who brought us both Menahan Street Band and Charles Bradley, presided over the collaboration, which took place in the old Dunham Studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Perception Productions, a New York based label that ran from the late 60s through until 1974, was a strangely eclectic affair. Its roster stretched from a radical Afro-American poet through to the pop band King Harvest whose hit ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’ became a massive hit for the UK band Toploader a couple of decades later. The inbetween points covered jazz, funk, vocal harmony soul and proto-disco. In fact distilled down into this compilation the label provides us a view of Manhattan’s black music scene of the period, from the established greats to the fresh young things who would make their mark in the coming years. The two men who ran the label, President Terry Phillips and Boo Frazier burned brightly for that half a decade before almost entirely disappearing from the music scene.

Dark, triumphant and mysterious; the new Menahan Street band 45 single "Light's Out" conjures images of hard-fighting pugilists battling it out under a bare bulb, of a matador's graceful execution of a lumbering bull, of sweat, romance and victory.  Brought in by a rollicking, almost tipsy, Hammond melody and backed by a smoky smooth guitar line, “Keep Coming Back” eventually erupts into a swanky nightlife anthem, complete with red velvet curtains and a garnished highball.
