Big thanks to Mrs. Sandra Stein aka Frinda Di Lanco for this exquisite contribution to our mix series, highly appropriate for the higher temperatures instilled by this Summer's realities. A beautiful display of Frinda's brand of historical dancefloor heavy weight, an aesthetic that has been brewing and elaborating by virtue of her years of research throughout countless worldwide record bin assaults, co-running the "Avec Plaisir" label and throwing the "Ciao Amore Baci" parties. Her path in navigating the contemporary dancefloor scene has been truly refreshing and inspiring to follow.

Hailing from Paris, Gautier Honorez, aka Monodominical is another top brass veteran digging deep in the trenches of European disco, sifting tightly through the endless catalogues of late 70s and early 80s dancefloor oriented releases. Heavy on the French and Italian fronts, this mix should serve as a good offramp to send you out into the weekend with a pleasant pep to your step. A protegé of Lexx and Alex Dallas from Club Zukunft and Drumpoet Community, Kejeblos belongs to that invincible circle of friends, whose members CCO, Wavetest and Late Invitation are doing the wickedest Chicago House in Liechtenstein, sorry, Switzerland.

Some little treats await you as you press play, with two newbie tunes… one from Palace Pasador’s forthcoming release on Phantom Island and the other from Lexx’s new LP about to drop on the label.

Shuya Okino is a globally recognized DJ, producer, and cultural icon, best known as one half of Kyoto Jazz Massive, Japan’s pioneering jazz and electronic music duo. A passionate advocate for Japanese club culture, he skillfully blends the influences of jazz and electronic music, connecting audiences around the globe and across different musical landscapes. In addition to his work with Kyoto Jazz Massive, Okino is the founder of the renowned music venue The Room in Tokyo and is also an accomplished author and music curator.
On his second visit to our Livingroom, we sat down with Shuya to talk about his experience at Kasheme and his aspiration to create soundscapes for all kinds of public spaces.

Listening Session w/ Shuya Okino

Sebastian Grätz, based in Hamburg, Germany, and known professionally as Basso, is the man behind Growing Bin Records.
Growing Bin was set up in 2007 as a music blog before evolving into an online record store in 2012, with the offshoot micro-label Growing Bin Records launching the following year. The blog initially existed to catalogue Basso's broad musical tastes, today Growing Bin is very much in the business of selling records; From the ultra-rare and special interests to generally curious finds.

A core appeal of Growing Bin is that the material is handpicked according to, and solely for one man's esoteric tastes. There is no chasing of trends; If Basso likes it, he'll sell it. Another of the shop's unique traits is its copywriting; Growing Bin's website is a marvel with musical categories including Cocktails By The Pool, Cheap Magic and Dancing For Mental Health, breaking down into subcategories such as Embarrassing Mindblowingness, Never Leave The Bag and many more.

Anyway, over to the mix. As expected, Basso has delivered a wonderfully eclectic selection of records. 
We'd like to mention a few of his inclusions; 'La Bimini' by Spunk, a breezy P-funk monster if ever there was one, off their 1981 LP Tighten It Up, tight as f**k indeed! Remaining in Jazz-funk territory, Underground Canopy & Paloma Paloma's deep and soulful 'Même Heure Même Endroit', B-side of a 7" single from 2023, is just sublime. The HaHa Sounds Collective version of Marker Starling's 'Silk Rock', as championed by Gilles Peterson on his Worldwide FM radio show, is an absolutely stellar piece of music and arguably one of the strongest releases of 2020. Taken from her 1976 LP Più, Ornella Vanoni's moody 'Tu Chi Sei?' (underscored by a beat suspiciously reminiscent of a certain Paul Simon record) is another timeless inclusion here.

Basso (Growing Bin Records)

Hailing via Ontario (CA), Brandon co-founded the famous "inivisible City" Record Shop in Toronto which has since then released some important re-issues on the self-owned label and generally become a haven for the local record-digging scene. 

Around 2016/ 2017, however, Brandon has parted with Invisible City and it certainly did not take him long to establish his own fantastic label "Séance Centre" which does not solely focus on the music  but instead situates its releases in their individual cultural and physical environments via visual modalities like photos and documentary but also word-based comunication such as interviews, essays or storytelling.

It was immediately clear to us that his approach fits perfectly with 5918mins. and so we are glad that Brandon has contributed this summer special full of goodness, seamlessly meandering between more experimental and pleasing sounds. Perfect for the current heat wave.
