"Months of lockdown boredom and a lack of nightclubs, house parties and festivals, chemically reinforced togetherness and gurns, has resulted in a new 12” by Paul & Shark.

The first single from the record titled ‘Roxanna_Break_Stuff’ incorporates memories of acid bright neons, the ubiquitous smileys, baggy trousers and bucket hats. Pumping drums, funky synth work and a standout vocal edit makes this one a unique and catchy piece of rave music culture.

The track comes accompanied with a remix by Japan’s rising UK garage producer Stones Taro, who's been featured lately in several places with his on target vinyl releases and precise DJ mixes.

We can only hope, but maybe we are on course to experience a “summer of rave” not unlike that of 30 years ago."

Alicia Keys is one of the undisputed queens of contemporary R&B. Powerful vocals, earnest lyrics and a deep self-awareness are the main pillars that have held up her career. But what happens when you fuse ballads with basslines? For this vinyl-only co-release on Bristol imprints Eminent and Slippery Sounds, Knoxville’s Nikki Nair stands at the intersection between new and old and redefines exactly how to nail the bootleg edit.

‘If I Ain't Got You’ is a precise flurry of two-step garage and nostalgic vocals, Alicia’s lilting voice still recognisable despite the dancefloor environment. A glossy rhythm breathes life into the old classic so that it becomes a new entity, which somehow welds together the murky rave realm with the weightlessness of Summer. It’s rare for tracks to suit any given setting, but this one might just be a strong contender.
 
‘Show Me Love’ takes a more starry-eyed course, weaving dewy textures into a fresh whimsical appeal. There’s still a subtle nod to the past despite the more recent Alicia/Miguel sample, which comes in the form of the 2010’s grime era melodies and nostalgic soundscapes. The breakdown around the halfway mark is a particular treat; it hoists up the vocals in reverence before the first of two ice-cold, dubby drops.

They say that if you’re paying homage to one of the greats, you’ve got to do it right. But Nikki Nair goes above and beyond that into a captivating alternate reality where the rush the second time round is just as good. These bootlegs are instant classics in themselves.

Earlier this year we welcomed two tastemakers of the original Bassline sound to the label for the first time on 1FBSS007. Two generations collided as OG Midlands Bassline producer Lil Milly collided with the young Manchester protege who's one of a handful of young producers helping carrying the torch for the sound in the last couple of years to keep the flame burning.

In February they served up 'The Steppa' which received huge support from Keep Hush poster girl Saint Ludo who made it a staple of her sets this year on platforms such as Höer Berlin and of course Keep Hush with clips going whipping up on a storm on social.

With arguably one of the biggest 4x4 releases in the scene in the past 12 months it would of been rude not to welcome a VIP to celebrate our 5 year milestone.

Last time we heard from Bristol producer Conducta was around the release of "City Breeze"—a floaty R&B-meets-garage jam from August last year. This time, on new single "Felt This Way", he's teamed up with fellow Bristolian Notion for another bass-heavy affair. "Felt This Way" still features some silky R&B vocals, but the star of the show is that molten lava bassline! It's no wonder both producers have been getting so much attention lately. With basslines like this and a learned appreciation for R&B vocals, these two will definitely be making some big moves this year. Watch this space.
