Living Room

There’s always this sort of creative re-evaluation period after you finish a project. After Open, A Home, singing felt like the next logical step towards being more free and genuine with my music. Colour of the Water is one of the first songs that came out of experimenting with my voice. It uses experience I had trekking over Lake Tekapo in New Zealand as a metaphor for seeing a relationship from a distance. The tides of two lakes represent two lovers - 'We’re blue and green in a crescent hold’. I ended up asking my friend Ivy-Jane Browne to sing the second verse, and song became a sort of duet.

The song is about Waking Up - literally and metaphorically. Waking up as the light streams through the shutters. Waking up to the outside. Waking to those around you. The original idea was just me throwing a bunch of sounds together into a little sound collage - a beautiful note sung by my friend Krisha Umali, a voice memo of my partner listening to music in the shower taken from my backyard (hence the dogs barking), rosellas frolicing in the school gutters across the street after the rain. Once I found the initial idea, I thought it would be fun to jam over it with my drummer friend Pete Longhurst and bassist Harry Birch. I had only played them 10 seconds of it and they launched into this amazing groove. It was such a good way to inject new life into the original idea.

This song came out very easily. I did a writing trip at the beginning of the year with my friend Chris Lanzon and it got me thinking about how certain lyrics can frame things in a way that makes the everyday seem extraordinary. It’s an idea that I was already thinking about, but off the back of that trip I found myself noting down lots of lyric ‘seeds’ that were just observations from my day to day life. When I sat down at the piano with those main chords, I scrolled back through all the seeds and just put them side by side - with that the song formed itself! It came to be about observing the world and others around you and the world observing back. It wasn’t until later on that I realised the song was doing something I had been reaching for since I started this new era of music - capturing the wholesomness/ lightness of the second Paddington Bear movie (one of my favourite movies).

My new song, Coloured is out now, and is the second single off my debut EP, ‘Perspective’ coming next Friday. The EP is about my life over the last year and a half after moving from the country to Sydney, and Coloured was the first song I wrote at the beginning of the journey. It represents the spectrum of new feelings I found myself in, disparate instruments and textures at first chaotic, but eventually combining to create what was, in retrospect, a single vibrant image.

UP is about persistence and resolve, that idea of getting up in the morning and moving forwards regardless of what you’re feeling. It’s the cold air jolting you into the day, a blooming and an opening.

Comets is about optimism - seeing the good in people regardless of the bad. It’s about finding resolve at the end of a relationship, but at the same time it’s the realisation that it isn’t just about me, but the personal narrative is actually tied to a broader experience.
