A first-generation Chicana from Orange County, Calif., Avalon blends her mother’s love of Madonna and Courtney Love with goth and indie sleaze to create her indie pop sound. In this exclusive commentary, Avalon discusses the making of her debut EP, ‘permanent californian,’ and the journey that led her to it, following years of dropping tracks on SoundCloud and touring with acts like the Dare, Future and Migos. The track “harder to reach than god” has gone through many variations, she tells SoundCloud, noting it was the product of “an extreme case of demo-itis.” Elsewhere, “so good” is about “the incestuous nature of nightlife,” while “scream” explores the duality of processing darkness in LA’s ubiquitous sunshine.
