And so we come to our 100th episode. We have been lucky enough to have showcased some incredible mixes since we started; it's truly been a pleasure to feature established guests as well as giving a platform to lesser known names. For this milestone mix we always had a particular guest in mind and we're more than honoured they agreed to be a part of the series. Optimo's musical ethos bleeds into the way we approach all our musical endeavours, be it a club night, DJ set, the label or indeed a mix series. We often find ourselves difficult to explain musically, which in this day & age of everything having to sit in its own box can on occasion be a source of frustration. But then when you look at Optimo who constantly and succesfully champion just great music who cares about genres. It's a mantra that's hopefully mirrored across our mix series. This year Keith and Jonnie enter their 20th year with Optimo; more relevant than ever with their exciting, eclectic DJ performances around the globe. Keith's two labels Optimo Music and Optimo Trax are garnered to shining a light on new and unusual music both for the club and beyond. A Love From Outer Space (Andrew Weatherall & Sean Johnston) at Zukunft 200118 Part 1

Movement 1 from Mexico Suite by Nigel Sixsmith released in 1985 as a demonstration of the Hybrid Music 5000 Synthesizer for the BBC Micro home computer which was initially released as the Music 500 in 1984...

The recording was captured via a touch of tube overdrive and into reverb from the stereo output of an original Music 5000 system. Note that the delays and panning effects are programmed into the original sequence.

Now relatively hard to find, Hybrid Technology's Music 5000 synthesiser was designed by Chris Jordan and initially marketed by Acorn Computers in 1984 as the Music 500 and connected to the 1MHz bus. The instrument was programmed in its own language called AMPLE which was quite powerful for its time for a home computer based music production system.

Implemented entirely in discrete logic, the Music 5000 was a surprisingly powerful multi-timbral digital wavetable synthesizer module considering its low cost.

Up to 16 voices could be played simultaneously from a pool of 14 different 128-byte wavetables. Pairs of oscillators could be phase or ring modulated or sync'd. Each voice had its own volume, envelope and stereo pan control which could be automated.

8 bit u-law companded audio (comparable to 12-bit linear digital audio) was produced at a 47kHz sampling rate using a form of Direct Digital Synthesis using the 'phase-accumulator' technique with 24-bit frequency/phase control accuracy.

For the 4th Early Sounds Recordings party we're happy to invite Zurich scene animators Lexx and Kejeblos (Phantom Island) together with DJ SCM, hosted as usual by Pellegrino 🎈

Lexx
 is  respected connoisseur DJ, earning a place among the clubbing greats in Switzerland.  
As an extension of this, he launched the Phantom Island label with his friends Kejeblos, Ron & Tobi in Zürich.
Storrer’s soaring house productions and edits have a distinct yearning for harmony. This is music with a certain quietude, a shimmering quality.
But Storrer’s peak-time sets in clubs are perhaps the most revealing. Cavorting between disco, dub, house and electro, he weaves intricate narratives that are full of surprises.

Kejeblos
 is a man of big taste. A man embracing the wide. Cleverly exhibiting Swiss Afro Boogie gems, Japanese minimal classics, Post-Bossa or subtle Chicago House, this DJ from Zurich could easily write a doctoral thesis about the art of record digging. A resident of Zurich’s club Zukunft and co-founder of Phantom Island Records, Kejeblos belongs to that invincible circle of friends, whose members CCO, Wavetest and Late Invitation are doing the wickedest Chicago House in Liechtenstein, sorry, Switzerland.

DJ SCM
Also known as Tony Pianola, he runs WATAJ Recordings where he releases his particular blend of italo-disco and organic house cuts with an original exotic flavour.
