SOUNDING ALDBOROUGH 2021 Episode 1

In this episode we return to the excavation half way through the dig. We discuss the main phases of the site and what the finds are telling us about them. We delve into the world of the blacksmith's workshop, talking to metalworking specialists Marcos and Elizabeth about ancient smithing and how they study it. Rose catches up with volunteers Jean and Hazel about what exciting discoveries they've made washing finds.

In this episode we look across the site at the end of the excavation and discuss the newly discovered late Roman buildings, ideas of re-use and re-building within the town. We join Gigi and Brian as they record the fantastic section through the street. And as we backfill the trench we chat to four Cambridge Classics students as they chat about their experience of digging, how we understand people in the past and the joy of sharing our discoveries.

Soundmarks is an art/archaeology collaboration between Rose Ferraby and Rob St. John at Aldborough Roman Town in North Yorkshire.

Their shared exploration of the site will take place throughout Summer and Autumn 2019, and result in an exhibition, sound installation, book publication, interactive sound map, short film, and public workshops.
