'Midnight Letters' [Andrew Tasselmyer & Blurstem] [PITP-C027]

I've got a very lovely piano piece for you this morning from the ever-lovely Moderna imprint, which continues to scour the hidden corners of the scene to bring you some of the most heartfelt music. This one comes from the emerging [and pretty young] Augsburg-based (Germany) composer Linus Alberg, offering us his label debut, titled Elements. On this collection of eight tracks, Alberg shares his sentimentality, initially inspired by the changing of the seasons but somehow evoking something else entirely, at least in me, as if uncovering a buried key to a forgotten memory. His incredible compositional musicality is only surpassed by the execution, whereby remarkably gentle melodies effortlessly flutter in the curated space, held together by the solid bass, frequency-rich harmonium, and occasional echoes of the breathy trumpet, played here by Matthias Lindermayr. Oh, but then, there is that Yamaha upright that carries a flavour so lush of its own. Here, Alberg is able to ring out the textural tone shifts with his exceptional, flawless control of the instrument, painting wide pastel landscapes with a gorgeous sonic palette. And yeah, okay, I am jealous. I'm jealous that I'm no longer in my twenties, making music as beautiful as this. But that is okay. I'm delighted. I'm happy to sidestep and listen and offer this space to a lovely new voice.

Sound In Silence is thrilled to welcome back Sweeney, presenting his new album Corporeal.

For over twenty years Jason Sweeney, based on Kaurna Country in South Australia, has been composing and recording either solo under his own name, in various electronic bands (Other People’s Children, Pretty Boy Crossover) and under the composer alias of Panoptique Electrical.

Corporeal, Sweeney’s fifth full-length album under his own name, is an album about personal ghosts. It consists of 18 tracks, carefully mastered by George Mastrokostas (Absent Without Leave), with a total duration of 58 minutes. For this album Sweeney started working with paranormal audio investigation tools such as a Spirit Box, the GhostTube apps, electronic voice phenomena and other immersive techniques in order to generate sound and lyrics. Using all of this raw paranormal material he then set about composing tracks using various electronic instruments such as vinyl and turntables, a bass guitar, old microphones, a VoiceBox pedal, a 10 track mixing desk with in-built effects, drum machines, a Nord synth, then he put it all into a SP404A Roland sampler and pressed record.

In Sweeney's words:
The 18 tracks on this album span songs, soundscapes and spoken word interludes. The lead track introduces the listener to the idea of the fragility and performativity of the corporeal body. One day we will all be dust. Maybe the bones remain? So then, who am I performing for in life? Who is my audience? Was I always haunted, even before I emerged as a sentient being into the world?
Singing as if from the paranormal beyond. Singing back to the shape of a former queer self, aged beyond recognition, another life lived in the shadows of one’s personal ghosts. Now walking through life devoid of corporeal matter. These days it’s just me and my spirit box.

This is a limited edition of 200 handmade and hand-numbered collectible copies. It is packaged in a lovely hand-stamped 127mm x 127mm 260 gsm dark grey recycled cardboard envelope with the front cover image printed on a polaroid style photo paper and two insert sheets containing tracklist, information and lyrics printed on a 120 gsm smoky grey recycled cardboard. It also comes bundled with a download code coupon and a Sound In Silence card.
