This is the first of a new series of short 3D audio podcasts from Sound Matters. We call them ‘sound bites’. 

In this episode, Chief Listening Officer Dr. Mike Edwards, shares some thoughts on how stories shape the world and, importantly, thoughts on how listening to the world can help us create new stories that can help us address some of the crises we face.

Listen to the soundscape from the Chelsea Flower Show 2022 'Garden of Show' which was recorded and produced by Sound Matters. 

Designers Lulu Urquhart & Adam Hunt commissioned Sound Matters to design a sound installation for their Rewilding Britain Landscape garden to reflect how the biodiversity of a landscape can flourish when introducing important ecosystem engineers like beavers.

Sound Matters travelled to Devon to record a number of different beaver habitats including those at Derek Gow's consultancy and those at other locations including along the River Otter. They then designed a surround sound system that was installed into the Chelsea Flower show garden to create an immersive sonic experience.

Species/sounds that can be heard in the soundscape are:

Bees/bumblebees
Dragonflies
Calling water rails
Beaver tails crashing 
Bill clacking storks 
Reed warbler & sedge warbler
Reed buntings
Piping kingfisher
Frogs including pool frog 
Calling corn crakes 
Great spotted woodpecker drumming
Longtailed tits 
Cuckoo calling 
Muntjac deer calling
Vixen fox screaming 
Beavers playing, flighting and chewing

Rewilding Britain Landscape - A Soundscape by Sound Matters (Chelsea Flower Show)

TIME SQUARE (NYC) SOUNDWALK

Join us on an immersive 3D-audio virtual soundwalk through the streets of central Paris.  The listener is taken on a journey starting within the insulated walls of the Louve Museum, then over the Pont Des Arts bridge, then meanders along the Seine River, where you can hear distant buskers and the iconic French Police Sirens, Listen out for the many bicycles and cars driving over the cobbled streets. The journey carries on through the hip Latin Quarter and eventually ends in front of the famous Notre Dame Cathedral.

RIVER SEINE(PARIS) SOUNDWALK

Join us on an immersive 3D-audio virtual soundwalk along the beautiful river Castril. The listener is taken on a journey which meanders along the Castril River, along wooden and metal bridges. The most interesting part of the walk is when we enter the tunnel running parallel along the river, the soundscpae get filtered by the surrounding dense walls, the listener is then taken back towards another tunnel which joins the river by the waterfall. The contrasting timbre of the cave and the waterfall soundscape is quite intense!
