A preview of the generative online music platform Celestial Music Box. The sounds you are hearing are generated by star maps. When you see a star light up as a white sphere, that's a star "playing". The coordinates of the stars overhead are mapped to pitches. The higher the star is in the sky the higher the pitch. The position of the star along the horizon determines the panning and other spatialization effects. The stars play in order of their distance from where you are listening. Imagine if you could slow the speed of light of each star down and you are listening to the sound of each star in order of their distance from Earth.

Even if the sun is out, the stars are above, you just can't see them. CELESTIAL MUSIC BOX uses the star map of the sky above you right now like the prongs of an old metal music box—to trigger sounds in real-time. The note and position of the sounds are based on the star’s proximity to you right now. Each star’s tone is chosen carefully, and tuned to a base pitch of 432 Hz, to promote physical and spiritual healing, stress relief, and deep relaxation.

The Great Auk was a sea bird closely related to what is the modern-day penguin. They lived and flourished along the coasts of the North Atlantic on both the North American and European sides. It had a black back, a white belly, and oily feathered skin. It was a flightless bird and an adept swimmer. The Great Auk was a food source for many northern indigenous tribes of North America. The ancient Maritime Archaic people were buried with Great Auk bones. As European settlers arrived in North America hunting of the bird increased for food, feathers, and oil. Despite some laws protecting the hunting of these birds as their number dwindled in the 1500s, by the mid-1800s they were extinct.

Great Auk

Michael Reiley is a composer and musician. He creates sonic worlds in the traditions of sound therapy, sacred music, and Deep Listening. His work explores the nexus of inner and outer soundscapes as a mode of transpersonal connection and oneness. Through this exploration spectrums of listening consciousness are illuminated including music for sleep, dreaming, meditation, therapy, movement, and focused states of attention/awareness. His music uses techniques and technologies such as drones, binaural beat frequencies, color therapy, data sonification, field recording, tape loops, sacred geometry, esoteric frequency ratios, alternate tuning systems, extended improvisations, sound healing instruments, and more traditional instruments like piano, hand pan, and synthesizer.
