SOS Colombia Diego Sanchez x STAV.

A series of ongoing protests began in Colombia in April 2021 against the proposition of increased taxes, corruption and healthcare reform.

This artistic demonstration is to support the right to live and protest. It is a tribute to the people who have lost their lives and to the ones who are still fighting in this national strike which has become a symbol of solidarity for the victims.

The Future Is Now demo

This one is a cover of a beautiful Israeli pop song about identity and belonging by Ethiopian-Israeli singer @cabracasay and @idanraichel that I’ve rearranged in my own way 🎶✨🌊 over the last couple of days.

It captures the experience I relate to of navigating multiple identities and belonging to place, and the tone is grounded and embodies a sense of clarity that takes into account all the parts  (@cabracasay sings it so beautifully too).

The message is that even though we are different, we are all connected to this land and it has made us who we are ✨

At the start I’ve added text of the main line both Hebrew and Arabic, in the context of a classic conversation that I’m sure many people all over the world are familiar with:

Soulful, groovy and honest, Melbourne-based singer-songwriter STAV. combines seamless arrangements of intricate nylon-string guitar with an expressive voice. Heartfelt songs inspired by jazz/folk/acoustic/soul, her performance is raw, intimate and playful. 
Performing both solo and with her band, the project has now released their debut album 'The Horizon Line.'
Weaving lyrical stories with guitar and voice (Stav Shaul), violin and voice (Esther Henderson), double bass (Isaac Gunnoo), drums (Hannes Lackmann) and guest saxophonist Jared Becker, the music is rich in rhythm, serene strings and uplifting melodies. 
A year of many achievements for the band, 2016 has included their residency in March at the Grace Darling celebrating the release of their single, 'Shouldn't Be Afraid,' and their East Coast Tour peaking with their performance at the Bello Winter Music festival. The band look forward to sharing more music.

I came across this song a few years ago and was drawn to the story, so here's a stripped-back solo version. The photo is of a figurative sculpture I wove in 2011 as part of an artwork, aka reclining string person. I chose this photo for the song because of the combination of fragility, intricacy and resilience I associate with both string and the persona in the song.

Weakening Awakening

Recorded this at home today, thought I'd share it here to document the process (and so that I'm not hoarding too many songs). The sound/mix isn't great but today the focus was more on singing than recording (I know I'm probably going to look back at that phrase and say "how can you separate the two?").

Singing with an intimate tone (close up, not projecting very much). Wanted to capture the sound of me singing absent-mindedly to myself, so left it quite raw but added some harmonies and more guitar.

Temptation Since The Dawn Of Time improv

Continuing with some home recording... an improvised soundtrack to a short 'behind-the-scenes' video of my most recent concert (real life audience). The image is part of something I painted a few days before the concert.

Just updated my computer so the DAW is almost unrecognisable because you can do so much more on it now. Until I figure out how, I'm back at square one but happy to create and learn again. 

Also, I quite like this improvised, multitrack approach to songwriting. And can you hear the kookaburra?
