Space and time both play a role in pølaroit’s music. A felt connection to Jonas and Marius’ hometowns  in Northern Germany, their geography, as well as a  sense of pertaining to a specific instant in time, a  generation, are both expressed in the duo’s strain  of melodic deep house, “We see our music as a  snapshot of time and music,” they say. The chosen  name for the duo, pølaroit, is a reference to this  idea of capturing a moment and it tributes both  their northern roots (Polar) as well as the birthplace  of techno (Detroit).  

Jonas and Marius, both in their mid-twenties, grew  up near Hanover - yet it was only in 2018 that they  crossed paths for the first time. Prior to that, Jonas  had been developing his own work as a pianist,  influenced by neo-classical artists such as Nils  Frahm and Olafur Arnalds as well as scoring pieces  for film and advertisement. Marius on the other hand, who had been playing the drums since a  young boy, started his musical path at sixteen  deeply influenced by his interest in percussion and  the urban electronic music scene of the time. When  both met at a Christmas market in Hanover, after  one too many cups of glühwein, they set a studio  date just for fun. From that first day it became  immediately clear to both that Jonas’ melancholic piano melodies weaved themselves seamlessly to finish into otherwise hard-electro, “We love the imperfect, human touch and want to transport this feeling into electronic music,” says Jonas, “We recognised that everything gets faster and faster in our society, and that there is a certain perfectionism floating in our generation. That is not the way we see our music, we want to be more and more in the moment when creating,” adds Marius.  The EP’s track Underwater encompasses the desire for honesty by the use of a detuned piano, while the sound of waves that is heard throughout Cala calls forth a natural and earthly force. The title track, Pure features field recordings of a brick smashing against a wall – with it the veneer of perfection is also shattered. Their interest in “keeping things real" also informs the gear the duo chooses to work with - mainly analog synths and  tape machines - as well as, of course, their collaboration with singers Luna Morgenstern on Perfect Strangers and Margret on Underwater who add warmth and intimacy to tracks through their voices. Their quest for an authentic, unreproducible sound is also the reason why playing live is an important part of pølaroit’s act.  Through five incredibly catchy tracks, Pure is an EP which evokes nostalgia. The longing expressed through whimsical melodies and a full-bodied bass calls forth a time when things weren’t always polished or airbrushed. Such an approach has uncovered the magic at the heart of pølaroit’s music and what makes this enigmatic, astute duo so very special; their ability to create a mature and contemporary sound that retains purity.

We're back with some strong stuff this week: Hicky & Kalo like their Whiskey neat and present this week's exclusive episode on Schirmchendrink. We love their powerful music and are extremely happy they included some brand new and unreleased tracks in the mix!

Hicky & Kalo are a DJ and Producer duo born and raised in Montreal, Canada. Both classical musically trained and both having a diploma in electronic music at the University Of Montreal, they have gone on to craft a stellar reputation for their inimitable edge, commitment to the scene and penchant for deep melodic grooves. 

The young pair, resident of the famous Stereo Montreal club and founders of budding imprint records label Plaisirs Sonores Records, (@PlaisirsSonoresRecords) are now firmly placed among the vanguard in dictating the new sound of the worldwide underground melodic scene.

Whiskey Neat | Hicky & Kalo

Manchester (UK) based Mazayr has always felt a deep connection to music. Experimenting
with electronic music for well over a decade, his passion for creativity stems from much
earlier as a keen drummer in his youth. This love for rhythm naturally translated to dance
music and birthed a tireless focus on finding his own sound as a music producer.
Mazayr’s sound has arrived at a blend of emotional, uplifting and melancholic melodies,
intertwined with punchy, solid grooves. Influences come from an eclectic mix of genres and
as an artist his tracks are built to stand the test of time. His style has earned him debuts on
labels such as The Purr, Cigarette Music and Canopy Sounds, with more exciting projects
already in the pipeline.
As a DJ, Mazayr has frequented various venues across Manchester, including Pangaea
Festival and the infamous Sankeys nightclub. In 2019, he began hosting events and a mix
series under the Right Frequency banner to showcase melodic house music.

For this podcast, I decided to explore my different facets as an artist. Through sound, I explore all the Paradoxes we face in our lives: throughout the whole 3 hours, 33 minutes and 33 seconds journey, I contrast darkness with lightness, emotions with energy. The podcast starts with softer dance music that I truly enjoy but don’t have the opportunity to play most of the time. The energy levels then gradually increase, reaching the sound I play in peak time, until we finally reach an emotional ending. There are many unreleased (and some unfinished) tracks of mine in this podcast--some for
the dancefloor, some to enjoy on a sunset drive. Some of these songs will come out this year and others in 2023. Can you spot them?

Burning Man was nothing like I wanted it to be. All facts pointing it wasn’t my time to be there. No luck with tickets, close friends who would usually push me giving up, expensive and long flights.. etc. 
Facts aside, came to me an inner-voice so powerful I couldn’t help but to listen to it, and by August I finally started to plan. Less than a month to go, no tickets, no camp or tent or RV.. By that time it was also way too late to join most of the line-ups. I started to act as everything was set and done anyways: got my flights, spread the word, and slowly the stars started to align.

When at the “Burning Man that I wanted”, I didn’t see the friends I planned to see, I didn’t play the places I thought I could, I didn’t catch most of the events I wanted to. I just had the Burning Man that I needed, and it was a wild and freaking dusty one!!! Played only a few and special sets, had more time to explore amazing art, meet new beings, tighten up old friendships or get lost in the dust!

We were all there for a reason. In the immediate sense to see the “burning of the man”: a symbol of structure and government and judgment. And when the fire show started, all I could hear was exclamations of anger and pure wonder. In a grander sense, however, we were all there to expand our views, bodies, minds, and spirits, exploding like the flames in front of us into a rebirth!

What I gained from this experience was a greater understanding of the power of the collective, and that things happen exactly how they are supposed to. To trust the process and work together. Everyone in that desert did their part to build the city, to provide an experience for each soul that passed by. In this moment of fire and destruction, we used our power as one to build an energy field filled with creativity, love, and compassion.

Amr Hachicho - known under his recording alias A.M.R - is an electronic music producer & audio engineer from Qatar. His drink of choice is an Espresso!

Amr began his journey into the world of electronic music during his early teens, experimenting with different styles of dance music in his bedroom studio. Coming from a musically inclined family, music has always played a big part in his life.

Even at a young age, Amr was constantly drawn to electronic music for its captivating and emotive melodies. As A.M.R he made his debut in 2008, publishing his first major single with Enhanced Recordings, gaining him popularity and support from some of the leading Trance DJs and producers from around the world, including Armin van Buuren, Above & Beyond, and Tiësto.

In 2018, A.M.R took on a new challenge and made his first appearance into the Deep & Progressive scene with the EP Orchids, followed by Silver Lining & Pale Blue, released on Monstercat Silk. A unique blend of tones and instruments received exceptional responses, sparking a new path for this artist. Several of A.M.R’s singles are in regular rotation on SiriusXM Chill, including "Fell Out Of Love" with Brandon Mignacca. In 2020 he debuted his first artist album A Place For Everything. A compilation of familiar and fresh sounds full of color, each track taking the listener on a musical experience. Later that year, he produced a guest mix for Above & Beyond's acclaimed "Group Therapy" radio show.

A.M.R continues his pursuit in the realm of electronic music, finding new and innovative ways of reaching his audience, but keeping his signature sound at the core of each track.

Korean-Canadian producer Hyunji-A recently debuted on TOR with a prolific pairing, showcasing her knack for enticing & emotive grooves.
