For what will conclude our year and usher in a new one of astrological forecasts and convincing new year resolutions, we have our January guest and Acido Records boss man, Dynamo Dreesen doing what he does both in equal measure, naturally and supremely.

Now in operation for over a decade, Acido has become somewhat of an unmonitored breeding ground for unconstrained, left of centre rhythms, often laced abruptly in psychedelia though always heavily drenched in peculiarities. Whether it’s meditative soundscapes, experiments in hip-hop or high-paced playful oddities, Dynamo and his equally talented group of friends have occupied Acido’s space almost exclusively over the last ten years, with the latter five being presided over by the safe and guiding hands of Dre(e)svn, the alias given to that of the dynamic partnership between Dynamo and Sued don, SVN.

These Acido reverberations are most alluring particularly in their reticent nature, allowing the listener to discover much upon recurrent listens. Having released a staggering (by Acido standards) four EPs in 2014, the timing appears perfect for this venerated figure to get festive and make his way all the way south to display his skills in both the party, and, the party. Expect an evening of no holds barred swinging antics. Check this insight in advance.

With their self-titled debut last year on Total Stasis, CS + Kreme’s leftfield, ambient pop took us by surprise and turned out to become one of our favorite, rinsed home-records from 2016. With a handful of gigs so far exclusively in the open air of Melbourne, the duo, consisting of Conrad Standish and Samuel Karmel (also part of F Ingers), team up again for this release to jam together a bubbly, hypnotizing lullaby before venturing off into a warped dreamscape around the 10 minute mark. On the B-side Vancouver-via-Kaifeng resident Yu Su cleanses the body, mind, and soul with Little Forest. As we welcome in the serene green of summer we are reminded how crucial it is to diversify our experiences, perspective, and sound. Therefore we have prepared a proper tribute with four hours of UK Street Soul, laid down by the masterful hands of Finn Johannsen. Inspired by an early thirst for the underground pirate radio culture that permeated throughout disused locations in the UK, this mix is a head first dive into a particular era of music that continues to resonate deeply today. Keeping busy as co-owner of Macro Recordings and working at Hard Wax, Johannsen has developed a particular knack for pulling out life affirming gems at just the right time, massaging the mind into the kind of fluid state that we like to propagate. Part the clouds and play it loud!

"This mix goes back to what I liked to listen to about thirty years ago, when not in the mood for rushing music. I always loved a sweet Soul vocal, the bass weight of Dub and a dope Hip Hop beat, and thankfully there were a lot of great tunes around at that time that combined those elements, particularly in the UK. Most notably The Wild Bunch and Smith & Mighty in Bristol as well as Soul II Soul in London merged UK sound system culture with Jamaican Lovers Rock and American Hip Hop and R&B sounds in the late 80s, and their success led to a vibrant underground scene that was tagged UK Street Soul, or UK Club Soul. As with other UK Breakbeat styles, UK Street Soul was mainly a fiercely independent white label culture, the music produced with very basic equipment and mostly amateur vocalists, and spread across country via hundreds of illegal pirate radio stations in towerblock squats and similarly disused locations. I used to tune in to the pirates on trips to the UK as much as I could, envious of the determination and underground spirit with which the network broadcasted their sweet and raw sounds against a grim reality and looming prosecution by the authorities. The sound is still resonating with current club music, but as the stations originally airing it, the producers originally creating it and the labels originally releasing it a lot of it has just vanished. This mix is intended as a tribute to a pirate radio UK Street Soul show. It contains some obscure gems and some better known gems from the UK and US, and is probably best listened to through booming car speakers or headphones, or at home while getting ready for the club, or in the setting described in the last song: and look at the view from your balcony, London through your eyes. No one but you to keep me company, twenty floors up a high-rise. After all, it is still Soul, and so it is mainly about love. But make sure to play it LOUD."

Eighty years ago, the "alt-right" proudly called themselves by a different name: fascists. The first war they launched was in July 1936, when right-wing Spanish military generals attempted to overthrow the democratically elected, left-leaning government of the Spanish Republic. The coup initially failed, but the generals, aided by Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini, transformed their effort into the bloody three-year long Spanish Civil War, a dress rehearsal for World War II. Though the Republic ultimately lost the war, its defenders organized a response that will endure forever as a testament to solidarity: the creation of the International Brigades, tens of thousands of volunteers, from more than fifty countries, who journeyed to Spain to fight fascism. These included 2,800 Americans who came to be called the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. 
On October 6th, sui generis Brooklyn-based band Barbez, in collaboration with singer Velina Brown, release a remarkable tribute to those volunteers called For Those Who Came After: Songs of Resistance from the Spanish Civil War. These inventive and moving new renderings of the indelible protest songs of the International Brigades will be released on the pioneering Boston-based label Important Records. The album was recorded live at the Japan Society, in 2016, at the annual reunion of veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, an event that has been held in New York since the 1940s. The highlight of the reunion has always been the singing of these songs, which were led on several occasions by Pete Seeger, a lifelong friend of the Lincoln veterans, who recorded many of them for his iconic 1944 album, Songs of the Lincoln Battalion.
Barbez draws on avant-rock, contemporary classical and folk music styles such as cumbia and flamenco to reinvent iconic songs like “L’Internationale” (The International) and “Viva la Quince Brigada” (Long Live the Fifteenth Brigade) for a new generation of listeners. The album features the group’s stellar musicians: clarinetist Peter Hess (Philip Glass Ensemble), theremin virtuoso Pamelia Stickney (David Byrne), marimba and vibraphone player Danny Tunick (the Clean), guitarist Dan Kaufman (Rebecca Moore), violinist Catherine McRae (the Quavers), bassist Peter Lettre (Shearwater), and drummer John Bollinger (Sway Machinery); with vocalist Velina Brown (San Francisco Mime Troupe) and special guests Dafna Naphtali on background vocals and Sebastiaan Faber on trumpet. It’s the first Barbez record since 2013’s acclaimed Bella Ciao (Tzadik), which was inspired by ancient Roman Jewish melodies and the Italian Resistance during World War II. Like each of the group’s previous five albums, For Those Who Came After was mixed by the incomparable Martin Bisi (Swans, Sonic Youth, John Zorn) at his legendary B.C. Studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Live engineering was performed by Damon Whittemore (Paul McCartney, Andrew Bird). Released on vinyl and CD, the album also features extensive liner notes by award-winning author Adam Hochschild, who recently published a groundbreaking history of the Spanish Civil War.

In Hour 2 we hand over to Sami Baha, the beatmaker inspired by Dirty South hip-hop producers like DJ Screw. He crafts slow, moody tracks with miles-deep bass and explosive samples. Baha was born in Istanbul, and his music is heavily informed by the popular Turkish music (or Arabesk) that he grew up with, even if it more closely resembles a spaced-out instrumental take on Southern rap. He contributed tracks to online Turkish hip-hop compilations during the early 2010s, and after receiving attention , he moved to London in 2015. His debut EP Mavericks was issued by Planet Mu in April of 2016.

When we spoke last, it was – and how could it not be? - of rioting and the necessity of bottom heavy dance music, of taking and being taken by times you do not choose. Of Lust for what has nothing to do with sex, or perhaps only remotely, and carrying yourself by getting carried away in what could be a cathartic fury and the restraints of a dance floor, a dance floor imposed by the sound of thought.

Motivated by an unsatisfied desire to dance to a complimentary and considered progression of DJs, coupled with a view to romanticize and mythicise the power of speakers and poorly lit spaces, sound of thought vehemently vowed never to complain again, but to only get even, and to get even with a certain sound as-well.

A sound of the political kind, an aesthetic but much more; those rare instances of walking tall and grinding and not cowering or self-pleasuring in feelings of being betrayed and lifted simultaneously.

Our sound implies that we don’t discriminate, do not even regulate, we don’t preach or tell you where it’s at, just where the music is coming from. Take what you will, just listen.

So please, do not vote for us as we will not deliver you even more (bass) nor highly choreographed hands in the air moments, but an acute desire to furnish the nights proceedings with bottom heavy bounce and a contextually appropriate combination of flirtation and freedom of expression.
