Sci-Fi UI is a collection of 401 unique, futuristic, alien-technology sounds divided into 7 thematic collections.  This is not just another collection of bleeps and bloops.  The sounds were created by manipulating field recordings, Foley, and sound effects giving them a personality with an organic, emotional and performative feel.  The types of sounds include positive, negative, and neutral alerts, alarm loops, file and program loading, power up and power down sounds, software glitches, and system failures.  Also included is a collection of alien technology ambience loops called “Control Room Tones” to help you design your spaceship interiors.

Sound Creation
These sounds were all created through experimentation with digital manipulation on a wide variety of ambiences, sound effects, Foley, and random field recordings pulled from David Fienup’s personal sound effects library.  While we won’t give details on the process, the software used includes Pro Tools and iZotope Rx.  Essentially, this whole collection started from taking “normal” recordings of everyday objects and ambiences, and messing with them until they were unrecognizable, while maintaining their organic randomness and performance.

Soundopolis Presents: Sci-Fi UI

<strong>The Gore Toolkit HD</strong> has everything you need for your bloody, gory, action/horror/sci-fi adventure.  If you need body damage sounds, you’ve hit the jackpot here.  

"Fresh Gore!" is a collection of 536 sound clips on 93 audio tracks - recorded, edited, and delivered as 96k/24bit stereo WAV files.  The collection includes blood, intestines, bones, flesh, punches, squishes, goops, splats, chops, tinks, chews, stabs, crunches, tears, sawing, some blade sounds, and so much more.  I mean I terrorized so much produce and a large ham that there’s probably a warrant out for me!!!  And I couldn’t help myself after demolishing coconuts to record the classic “coconut horse trotting” sound… Bonus!  Oh, and the "blade sounds" are different than the "Blades Collection".  Fresh blade sounds!

"Fienup’s Classic Gore" COMES FREE!  This is a whole other batch of sounds from earlier in my career, consisting of 262 audio clips on 46 stereo audio tracks, recorded, edited, and delivered as 48k/24bit WAV files.  These sounds are straight out of B or even C-horror films.  Don’t get me wrong - these sounds still serve me well in every action/horror film I work on!  The “Classic” gore consists of more blood, bones, flesh, punches, smacks, chops, crunches, snaps, squish, squirts, splats, oozes, whooshes, and even a rubbery/stretching sound.  Between these two collections you are set for almost any kind of combat sounds you need!

Soundopolis Presents: Gore Toolkit HD!

Glass Smash HD is a massive collection of individual glass sounds including breaking, smashing, debris and footsteps.  Never buy another glass breaking sound effect again!  This library contains 578 individual clips spread across 381 audio files.  All of the sounds in this library were recorded, edited, and mastered as 96k/24bit WAV files.  I started off by smashing everything I could find including panes of glass, mugs, beakers, shot glasses, growlers, light bulbs, beer/wine/champagne/soda/hot sauce bottles, punch bowls and cups, fish bowls, table tops, vases – even an old 30” tube tv and a chandelier!  I had so much glass I started stacking panes of glass on top of each other and smashing several at a time with a 4lb sledgehammer!  And I wasn’t happy yet?  HECK NO!  I picked up piles of glass and dropped them to simulate debris.  Everything from light, powdery debris up to buckets of glass debris.  Then I thought, well, while I’m here… So I walked all over that glass.  I jogged, ran, walked, crept, and most importantly made “small moves” like turning around, grinding, transferring my weight, individual small steps and much more.  Will you or I ever need that much glass?  I don’t know.  Probably not…  But hey – you won’t have to buy another glass library for a long, long time – if ever.  I even threw in a couple of ceramic breaks, and a few instances where the object didn’t break at all… Just kind of bounced a few times…

Soundopolis Presents: Fine Sand Debris

CB Radio is a small collection of static produced by different channels on a 40-channel CB Transducer.  Included in the collection are button sounds and antenna extension and contraction sounds.  I found a pair of “Realistic TRC-222 40-channel Citizens Band Transceivers” at a second hand store, but only one works!  Such is life.  So here are the sounds the surviving “walkie-talkie” produces.

Recording Technique: This collection was a simple one.  I used a Sony PCM-D50 in ORTF setup, recording at 96k/24bit.  I just held the device up to the recorder and hit record, flipped through various channels.  Super simple.  I found that the static sound was very “static”… Duh, you might say.  But when I touched the antenna it would attenuate the sound a bit.  So most channels were recorded for ~30 seconds as is, and then again varying touching the antenna to give it a “breaking up” cadence.  Those tracks are labeled “warble”.

For the button clicks and knob turns I took the batteries out of the CB transducer so that I could get them clean without any static.  This includes a “channel button,” which shows you which channel you’re on; the talk button, like all walkie-talkies; the channel selector dial, which … selects the channel, and produces a clicking sound; and the volume dial, which also acts as an on/off switch.  The “Battery Test” button sounded just like the channel button, so I didn’t bother.  The antenna sounds were the biggest challenge as the antenna extends out 3 or 4 feet, so I tried to give enough variation in speed and force to meet all antenna needs.  It was actually quite an awkward antenna.  You couldn’t just pull it all the way out in one quick motion.  I don’t think anyone could look cool and suave pulling this antenna all the way out.  Not even Kurt Russell… And he’s a badass.

Baby Robins is a selection of recordings of a Robin’s nest with 3 baby birds being fed by their parents.  You can hear the whoosh and flapping of the adult Robin’s wings as they swoop in with nom-noms, the babies chirping loudly to get some of those fresh grubs and worms, and finally the deep pounding of wings as the adults swoop out of the nest in pursuit of more food.

It was an awesome week of recording and watching the babies grow rapidly.  Until one day, they had flown the coop, and ventured off into nature to pursue their own careers, most likely in bio-engineering or dropping deuces on unsuspecting human heads. 
 
Recording/Editing
Fienup used a pair of Sanken COS11D microphones, Lectrosonics transmitters, and a Sound Devices 633 recorder.  All files were cleaned, edited, and mastered in Pro Tools and iZotope Rx.

 The lavaliere microphones were great for getting in close to the nest without disturbing the Robin’s family.  I simply attached them to a stereo bar, and hoisted them up on a microphone stand.  While the days I recorded had fairly calm winds, I tried both Rycote Overcovers, and Bubblebee Windbubbles for wind protection, and both worked great.  I put the transmitters in a little sack tied to the mic stand, and set up my recorder just a few yards away in my studio.  Even though I recorded for several days, I have curated a nice sampling of clips that contained the least amount of background noise. (see recording setup images below)

Fireworks is a collection of small, consumer fireworks fountains with all the fizz, zip, zap, pop, and crackling that you would expect.  There are also 2x 6-minute ambience tracks from 4th of July 2014 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as people set off fireworks all around the city.  You can hear fairly close, and very distant explosions from both municipal and residential displays.  These two tracks were edited down from much longer recordings to remove any long pauses in the action.  It was a beautifully quiet night, except for the fireworks!

Fienup used a RODE NT4 microphone and an ElectroVoice RE50b, with a Sound Devices 633 recorder.  All files were cleaned up, edited, and mastered in iZotope Rx and Pro Tools Ultimate.

Printer Destruction is the result of destroying a desktop Canon MX450 printer/scanner with a 4lb Collins Axe.  The collection also includes the printer being dropped from a height of 4 feet, as well as the sounds of rummaging through the debris.  The Collins Axe impacts are broken up into general hits, and glass impact subcategories, based on whether the main focus of the sound is plastic impacts or glass impacts - though both are present in most of the sounds.

The files are also chronological by subcategory.  So, you can follow the journey from the first hits before too much debris is created, to the final death-blows when glass, plastic, metal, and electronic parts are rattling around the inside of the chassis, and flying all around the room as debris. 
 
Recording/Editing
Fienup used a RODE NT4 stereo XY microphone and a Shure KSM109, with a Sound Devices 633 recorder.  All files were cleaned up, edited, and mastered in iZotope Rx and Pro Tools Ultimate.

There are 22 stereo and 22 mono files.  These are identical iterations, except they were recorded with different microphones.  The MONO versions are labeled as such in their filename.  Listen to each to determine which best suites your timbral needs.

Because the stereo files were recorded with an XY pair, the left and right channels can be panned to the center without phase issues.  Or you can just choose the left or right channel.  Options abound from these 2 simple file deliveries.

Interior Ambiences Vol 1 is a collection of room tones, and handy sounds to help you build interior ambiences.  This includes wind whipping through the trees outside, thunder, rain and hail just through a doorwall, various bathroom fans, HVAC humidifier dripping sounds, furnace pops, and even footsteps on the floor above the microphone position (separate from other sound files).  There are plenty of nice, quiet, airy room tones to use as your base layer.

Soundopolis Presents: Interior Ambiences Vol 1

Nature's Fury combines Soundopolis' three libraries: Rain, Wind, and Thunder into one massive library with 3 additional bonus tracks!  The three bonus tracks are 5.1 surround designed thunderstorms, each 4minutes in length.  The entire library is over 5hours of sound on 197 tracks!

Nature’s Fury has been sound designer David Fienup’s passion for over 5 years. Over the past 5+ years, David has been obsessively recording thunderstorms, rain, and wind wherever he goes. These sounds come from Ann Arbor, MI; Boyne City, MI; Detroit, MI; Chesterfield, MO; Virginia Beach, VA; and several other locations – often just pulling over on the side of the road somewhere... Fienup’s tenacity with carrying around a stereo recording device, whether it be his Sony PCM D50, D100, or Sound Devices 702T, has paid off in huge ways. He has risked his life and his gear to capture some of Nature’s most Furious moments! In fact, his PCM D50 was knocked over so many times recording these sounds he had to buy a D100 to complete the library. Fienup has always been awestruck by the very power of thunderstorms saying,

“Thunderstorms beat at your chest, your heart. You can’t beat back a thunderstorm. The sheer power of this natural phenomenon reminds us that we are a part of Nature, but we do not control Her. Thunderstorms are so rich with sound: from the wind whipping through trees, to the rush of water pelting the ground, to the crack of lightning and the deep rumble of thunder; it’s one of the most complex natural sounds on our planet. Easily my favorite soundscape.”

"Nature’s Fury: Thunder" has three separate categories: Thunder, Rumble, and Thunderstorm.

Nature’s Fury: Thunder

This portion of the library contains tracks labeled “boom”, “crack”, and “rolling”.  The labeling helps to separate the various sounds into categories, but there is a lot of gray area between them.  “Boom” thunder sounds more like an explosion.  “Crack” thunder sounds like “typical” thunder - imagine a bolt of lightning from the hand of Zeus.  And “rolling” thunder just has the rumbling tail without a definitive initial crack.

Nature’s Fury: Rumble

This portion of the library is Fienup’s favorite!  These 48 tracks were designed from low rumbling thunder.  Through the processes of iZotope DeNoise and Spectral Repair, and running them through ProTools with API EQ and MaxxBass, he was able to deliver some great source material: gnarly rumbling sounds without all the rain, birds, traffic, and other extraneous sounds you often pick up recording storms!  These will be great for getting your subwoofer working into overtime, and add some really great low-end to your thunderstorms.  There is a whole lot of variation since each sound was taken from a unique raw thunder track – unique to the library in fact.  None of these sounds are duplicates from Nature’s Fury: Thunder.

This portion of the library contains raw thunderstorm tracks, except for the removal of some birds and wind-chimes of course – HOW ANNOYING!  These are great for your starting point.  Find your favorite track, which already contains your rain and thunder, and then add individual Rumble, Thunder, and Wind tracks for those great filmic moments!

File Delivery – Why 48k and not 96k?
This collection was recorded over many years.  Throughout those years I flip-flopped between recording at 48k and 96k.  While on the road, with only one device, I would often record at 48k so I wouldn’t run out of space before returning home.  The problem with recording storms is that you watch the weather, set up microphones 30 minutes to an hour before the storm hits so you can get the oncoming, distant storm, and then wait for an hour after the storm passes to get more distant storm sounds.  That can fill up your memory pretty fast when you’re in places like Chesterfield, MO, where high humidity causes very lengthy and powerful storms.

I was in a bit of a dilemma when putting this library together.  I had both 48k and 96k files.  I certainly didn’t want to up-res all the 48k files to 96k and claim it was a true HD library.   After all, a sound file is only as good as its recorded sampling rate.  So, I went the other way: I decided to down-res the 96k files after all of the editing, processing, and mastering were done so that all files were in the same format.

Down-resing to 48k also makes the library quicker and easier to download.

This portion of the main library contains a variety of wind ambiences including some pretty heavy winds!  There is wind in late-fall forests where you can hear branches hitting each other and leaves on the ground; high gusting winds roaring through trees and houses; whipping winds blowing through leafy trees and dry cattails; and even some interior perspective with wind whistling through a window seal.

Swish is a micro-collection that contains a ton of variation of two objects swinging around, creating swishing/swooshing sounds.  The first is a simple cat toy wand and string, that used to have feathers on the end.  The second is a branch from a thorn bush.  The collection includes individual swishes, multiple swishes, and continuous swishes (swirling around and around).  Each at various speeds.

A SONY PCM D100 was used to record, and iZotope Rx9 was used for editing and cleanup.

David took the old, slightly cracked crash cymbal, and literally cut into it with tin snips (picture below).  He then took pliers, bent up some of the cut parts, and began experimenting with scraping various parts of the cymbal and adjusting the microphone position.  The tonalities produced are almost nauseating!  Deep rumbling lows, shimmery atonal highs, gut-wrenching mids – it’s a sound designer’s dream! 

Recording and Editing
Fienup used a Rode NT-4, running through a Sound Devices 302, to make use of its great preamps and limiters, and then into his AVID HD Omni.  Pro Tools Ultimate with HDX and Omni, as well as iZotope Rx 9 were used in the editing and mastering.

Metadata
Metadata was embedded using SoundMiner Plus.  Metadata includes: Artwork, Filename, Description, Keywords, Duration, Sample Rate/Bit Depth, FXName, Category, SubCategory, CatID, Designer, Library, Location, Manufacturer, and more.

Soundopolis Presents: Scraped Cymbal

Foley Plus is a massive collection of sounds taken from sound designer David Fienup’s personal sound library and Pro Tools sessions.  The sounds were precisely edited, mastered, and arranged.  Finally, each file was infused with rich metadata descriptions and tags, so they can be easily found using any kind of search engine, whether it be Finder, SoundMiner, or any search engine within your preferred editing software.

The sounds: Foley sounds, of course, are practical sounds, or “everyday sounds” that are used in film, video, and games such as clothing movement, footsteps, dishes, chairs, doors, etc, etc, etc.

This collection covers a wide array of sounds from shaking a spray paint can to the rattling of a zipper.  In between, there are tons of clothing sounds like leather jackets, purses, armor, and fireman gear.  There are also a bunch of new footsteps like creaky stairs, inside a metal air duct, soft creaking carpet, wet concrete, and very creaky wood.  There are scraping sounds, screeching sounds, objects being dragged, catching fruit, cigarette embers, tons of paper sounds, animal nails running, chairs, chains, bottle and can sounds, plastics, a variety of lighters, people drinking beer, wine and liquor, nail clippers, mouth pops, mouth sucking in olives, telephone sounds, toilets plunging, … gasp… yeah, there’s a ton in here…  Hell, there’s even umbrella movement and rattling sounds to add in to a rain scene!

Foley in the Field: Many practical sounds cannot be recorded in the average home studio or small Foley space.  Many of the sounds in this library are just those – sounds that had to be recorded in the field.  Some of these sounds include car seatbelts, glove box, windows, keys in ignition, sunroof, doors, and simply getting in and out of a car.  Others include various doors such as garage and household doors, hospital curtains, hitting a tennis ball, frying pan sizzles, distant vacuum, etc.

All of these sounds were recorded for a few reasons.
1.	While I have many similar sounds in some stock and general libraries, I find many of the recordings old and outdated.  So I make great new recordings.
2.	When a library contains a sound I need, there are often only 1 or 2 iterations.  But, most of my projects need more than one candy wrapper crinkling sound, or more than one metal squeaking sound.  So, I record a whole bunch of each thing I need so that I have plenty of variety to get me through several projects.
3.	There are gaping holes in large, general libraries.  This collection will fill in a lot of those holes.  That’s why they were recorded, and that’s why I’m sharing them with the world.  Will it fill in all the holes?  No.  There are an infinite number of ways and reasons any one single object could or would create sound.  But the key to building a good sound library is covering as much as possible.
4.	I just love recording sound.  Period.

Analog Tape Alterations: Included in this library is a collection of sounds that were sped up and slowed down using analog tape.  The process also changes the pitch.  The method was simple: playback from Pro Tools to an analog tape machine.  Record them to tape.  Change tape speed.  Record them back into Pro Tools.  It was a blast.  And the result was a collection of vintage sounding files that are either faster and higher pitched than the original, or slower and lower pitched than the original.

Icy Snow HD came about in March 2015.  Here in Michigan, we already had around a foot of snow on the ground, when we also got freezing rain and sleet.  This created ~ 1/8” layer of fairly smooth ice on top of the snow.  So I ran out there with my Sound Devices 702T, and a RØDE NT-4, and started recording.  The first thing I noticed was that ice debris would glide noisily across the ice sheet producing a unique sound – at least much different than debris sliding across a frozen pond.  With the ice being rather thin, and therefore more prone to vibration, but with the snow underneath adding a bit of a baffle, the sound was just “different” from anything I had heard before.

So, I broke off pieces of ice and smashed them on the ice sheet, sending debris flitting and skidding across the yard, over little mounds and imperfections in the ice.  Then I slid some ice down a 6’ mound that the snow plow had created, which was also covered in 1/8” of ice.  I also recorded some great footsteps, with a nice ice crack, and the subsequent “plouff” as my foot went through the snow.  Next, I pressed my boot, and then my hand slowly on the ice, and captured some great ice stressing and cracking sounds (“Ice_Stress_Crack_...”).  Once much of the ice had been pulverized by these various tasks I performed some “snow stomps”, which would work well as either huge snowball hits, or body-fall sounds (labeled “Snow_Impact_...”)

Soundopolis Presents: Icy Snow HD

Heavy Metal! was recorded using a large metal car door and several stereo pairs of microphones.  The amount of variation is almost insane (hence the ! in Heavy Metal!).  I started off with banging the hell out of the door with a 4lb Collins axe, rubber mallet, hatchet (blade and flat side), machete, and even heavy-gauge chains.  Next I turned to scraping the old door until my ears were on fire.  It’s like 40 minutes of nails on chalkboard, except that it is metal bits scraping across a heavy metal door.  There are grinding sounds, scratching sounds, harsh squeaking sounds – with varying lengths and intensities.  I did my best to group similar sounds and lengths together so the user can grab one track and quickly audition several variations.  Most of the scraping sounds were made with a jagged piece of old dryer tube.

Then I moved on to sawing sounds.  I used a hacksaw and a double-sided machete with one side being a slicing blade, and the other being saw teeth.  And finally I took some heavy-gauge chains and went to town again.  This time I scraped and slid the chains across the door, and ratcheted the chains across various edges of the door.

CLOTHING FOLEY HD contains a range of Foley sounds, created from four different outfits. The main inspiration for the collection was the need for walking Foley to accompany the many footsteps I’ve added to the movies on which I’ve worked. While it is easy to find footsteps with various shoes on various materials, it is not so easy to find really good clothing sounds to go with the footsteps. So I set out to capture four common outfits, that could easily be used to cover many different wardrobe choices in movies and tv. Also captured are many variations of material sounds, patting, pockets, zippers and buttons for each of the outfits.

THE RECORDING:
The gear used in this production included a RØDE NT-4 XY microphone running into a Sound Devices 633, making use of the Sound Devices spectacular preamps for these delicate recordings. All sounds were recorded and edited at 96k/24bit to produce impeccable clarity and accuracy. All recordings were cleaned up using iZotope Rx 6 Advanced, edited in Pro Tools HD 12, and metadata was added using Peak Pro 6.

Interesting Mic Technique: For the walking sounds, since I was attempting to capture both upper and lower body material sounds with one XY microphone, I rotated the NT-4 90° (ninety degrees), such that the LEFT microphone was pointed at the upper body, and the RIGHT microphone was pointed at the lower body.This technique gives the user great flexibility in editing to camera perspective. If the camera is pointed at the legs of a character, for a dramatic walking shot, the sound editor can select or favor the RIGHT channel, which will contain more of the leg movement sound. The inverse is true for a shot that contains only the upper body - the Foley editor can select the LEFT channel, which contains more of the upper body movement.

For the non-walking sounds, I kept the NT-4 in the same configuration, but moved the microphone up and down into better, more direct positions for each action. This was to help keep the sounds centered in the XY pattern.

Dogs is a wide-ranging collection of small, medium and large dogs, barking, growling, sniffing, chewing, yelping, whining, whimpering, playing, playful fighting, walking, running, scampering – even some snoring and gut-bubbling digestion sounds!

There are cute and adorable sounds, vicious and ferocious sounds, in-your-face sounds and subtle sounds.  We have dogs walking on wood, various hard surfaces, carpet, and going up and down stairs. We even have New Guinea Singing Dogs, recorded at a zoo in Illinois, which “sing” an odd howling sound.

Best yet, there are 14 exterior ambience tracks that contain dog barking, ranging from right next door to very distant neighborhood dogs.  And most of those are 96k/32bit stereo ambiences!

Included in this collection are a few studio-recorded Foley sounds including dog/cat collars, dog nail walking sounds, and squeaky toys.
	

 
THE COLLABORATION:
 
David Fienup, of Soundopolis, recruited Steve Sholtes, of SholteSound, to help capture as many different types of dogs and dog-related actions as possible.  These two “brothers-in-sound” have worked on numerous projects together doing both location audio and post-audio.

The main “Dog Actor” in this library is Sholtes’ dog Charlie, a German Short-Haired Pointer.  Charlie is a big-ol dog, with a ton of personality, and a true canine’s instinct to bark at everything that moves – to protect his buddy, Steve, of course.  Charlie will be very-well rewarded for his efforts on this library – belly rubs, treats, and a happy home!
This library is an interesting collection of sounds recorded in many different situations.  Some come from random locations that Dave and Steve have been to on film and commercial shoots.  We are always looking to grab a few extra sounds for ourselves when we are on location.  Some sounds are staged in home studios, bedrooms, or just chilling around the house with someone’s dog.  Sometimes we just had a shotgun mic and recorder on hand, sometimes a Sony PCM handheld stereo recorder, and sometimes a stereo mic and recorder.

The Recording

What better way than to experiment with some old, broken cymbals he inherited from his old neighbor, former-bandmate, and friend, Intermedia Artist - Steve Joslin.  Pair that with his wife’s old violin’s bow, and you get some fantastic sounds.

Soundopolis made its entrance into the sound effects world with collections like Blades: a library of 260 audio clips covering machetes, daggers, bayonets, military sword, and other various bladed objects being sheathed and unsheathed, blade scrapes, clanks, hits, "schings" and yes, even scissors snipping.  This collection will add variety to your sound library so you're not using the same old sword hits from your father's collection over and over.  Screams not included!

Soundopolis made its entrance into the sound effects world with collections like Construction/Demolition.  This library is highlighted by its 11 construction ambiences, 27 hospital demolition ambiences, and 7 home demolition ambiences. These sounds work especially well in documentaries involving underwater photography, as well as films that need bullets penetrating water as the hero dives under and swims away from the villains. Soundopolis has made its entrance into the sound effects world with collections like Water: a library containing 154 different audio clips in 71 audio files.  There are plenty of fresh water movements, splashes, pouring, waterfalls, faucets, toilets, showers, fountains, sewage drains, drips, bubbles, water pipe smoking, boiling, and even ice cracking, impacts, and scrapes, with a side of snow shoveling for our northern-most friends.  Some of the stereo tracks were even recorded with one close and one distant microphone for easy cutting between close and distant perspective as the scene develops. Soundopolis made its entrance into the sound effects world with collections like Water Ambiences: a library of almost 2 hours of lake, river, ocean, and waterfall ambience tracks. These 44 stereo ambiences, averaging over 2.5 minutes each, will nicely expand your sound library, and add fresh sounds to your design palate. The collection covers some of the United States major waterways from the Atlantic Ocean and the rolling waves of Virginia Beach, to the Great Lakes including Huron and Michigan, to the Pacific Ocean and the crashing waves on the rocky shores of Hawaii. This library also includes some of Hawaii's waterfalls as well as a variety of river sounds from dense rapids down to a gentle lapping.

Sci-Fi Electric is a collection of 64 files containing over 80 audio clips.  Here you'll find a wealth of processed sounds for your Sci Fi adventure. Source material ranges from beard scratching to lap steel pickup interference.  Through processing they end up as "alienistic" textures, sparks, static, drones, hums, zaps, ambiences, and whatever else your imagination can come up with!  Other sounds include raw microphone feedback, streetlight buzz, and electrical static.

Track Names
Track names use the modifiers “Highs”, “Mids”, and “Lows”.  While these are very technical terms for various frequencies across the spectrum, due to the broadband nature of some of these sounds, these terms are being used more to illustrate the general “feel” of the most prominent frequencies of the sample.  So, these modifiers are not necessarily being used to indicate specific frequencies, but more a prominence of timbre.  It’s somewhat technical-based, and somewhat perception-based.  Have a listen.

Bowling is a collection of sounds recorded at a private lane, completely devoid of extraneous human and HVAC sounds.  This exclusive access allowed for recording various perspectives, including deep in the guts of the machinery, up-close to the pins, bowler’s perspective, and side perspectives.  This library includes all of the mechanical sounds, machinery ambiences, ball “pass-by’s”, ball return, gutter balls, pins resetting, and even bowling sounds without any machinery noise at all – that’s right, I got to turn off the machinery for clean bowling sounds! Foliage Sweeteners is a collection of sounds recorded in Soundopolis’ Studio, providing crisp new sounds ready for any project.  These “sweetener” sounds are great for characters creeping around in the bushes, running through the trees, or just walking through the park.  You can add specific environmental sounds to your ambiences, such as individual leafy tree branches that dip into frame, or cattails and bushes reacting to a gust of wind. Recording
Fienup used a variety of microphones including Schoeps MK4, Schoeps CMIT5U, Shure KSM 109, and an Electro-Voice RE50b.  A Sound Devices 633 was used for all recordings.

Editing
For this library, since all of the recordings were mono, Fienup decided to try and do all of the editing, sweetening, and mastering in iZotope Rx.  Fienup got his start editing sound effect recordings in Bias Peak Pro. As a matter of fact, that was his go-to editing software for the majority of his libraries until Bias discontinued producing the software and ended support for it.  While sound editing isn’t the primary function of Rx, iZotope has a similar workflow to Peak, but with much better noise reduction and sweetening software built right in.  The process was decently simple, although Pro Tools would probably have been easier for the editing portion.  But there’s something to be said for doing all of the necessary steps all in one window: denoise, eq, spectral repair, edit, organize, normalize/gain functions, etc.

Cloth Rip 1: Clothing is a collection of almost 400 cloth rip sound effects, using 7 different types of standard clothing and materials, recorded and edited with premium equipment, and delivered as 96k/24bit audio.  As usual with Soundopolis SFX libraries, there is a plethora of variation, including fast, slow, short and long rips.  There’s not much more to say.  It’s pretty straight forward.  Cloth being ripped.  In HD.  Boom!

Recording/Editing
Fienup used a Schoeps CMC6U/MK4 microphone.  He ran it through his Sound Devices 633 to make use of its great preamps and limiters, and then line-level into an AVID HD OMNI for recording in Pro Tools Ultimate.  All files were edited in Pro Tools and iZotope Rx.  If you’re actually reading this, and interested in recording your own cloth rips, don’t forget to wear a dust mask when tearing up textiles.  Boogers with denim in them are pretty nasty… or so I’ve heard… ;)

Metadata
Metadata was embedded using SoundMiner Plus.  Metadata includes: Artwork, Filename, Description, BWDescription, Keywords, Duration, Sample Rate/Bit Depth, Category, SubCategory, CatID, Designer, Library, Location, Manufacturer, and Microphone.

UCS Compliant

Soundopolis Presents: Cloth Rip 1: Clothing

Cloth Rip 2: Household is a collection of over 500 ripping, tearing, and shredding sound effects.  While the title is “Cloth Rip”, the materials range from common household cloths like curtains and towels to common household sheet-plastic, such as tarp and a heavy duty plastic garment bags used for storing clothes in a closet or attic.  The ultimate goal of this library is to give the user an even wider range of material rip sounds beyond just “cloth”.  “Well, why include plastic materials in a ‘Cloth Rip’ library”, you might ask?  There are a lot of blurred lines between what is considered cloth and plastic.  For example, polyester is a plastic fiber that is typically thought of as cloth.  So, we decided to just go for it.  As we see it, garment bags are used to store cloth, and tarp is a “woven plastic”, much like clothes are made of woven fabrics.  Anyway, that’s the story, and we’re sticking to it!  But wait!  There’s more!  In addition to the rip sounds, we have included some plastic movement sounds for both the tarp and garment bag.

As with all Soundopolis SFX libraries, this one is chalk full of variation, including speed, duration, and performance.  These sounds were recorded, edited and delivered in the same fashion and with the same precision and care as Cloth Rip 1: Clothing.
