Steve Graham is no stranger to the ever changing tides of the underground music scene. From his initial stomping grounds in Tampa, Florida to his current home here in New York, Steve has always managed to leave his footprint on the scene wherever he has been. In 2004, Graham achieved critical successes during his stint in Tampa. His time there culminated in organizing some of the most amazing sunset boat cruises with guests including the likes of Jay Tripwire, Naveen G, and Dory. Having now relocated to New York, Graham has surrounded himself around some powerful entities and talent including Desyn Masiello’s Faciendo label, San Francisco’s Listed Productions and Cityfox NY. We asked Steve Graham to come by the SoundPark Playground to give us a sampling of what kind of music we can expect from him in the future. Welcome to SoundPark!

Over the course of 2013, we have all been taken on a variety of magical journeys through unique fusions of music and art. Whether you were sharing the room with a 20 foot gorilla shooting lasers out of its eyes or moving along with gentle flames dancing atop of melting wax, the artists providing the soundtracks to those experiences are innumerable. Magical moments shouldn't be degraded to a preferential top list. We don’t do top lists here. What we do here at SoundPark is a bit different. Our season closing will encompass some artists that crafted their own magic over the last year. We invited some of our favorites to come by the Park and chat a little about 2013. Along with this, they also provided us a little musical recap with an exclusive mix to keep our feet dancing well after the ball drops.

First up in our little year-end special is an artist that has captured our hearts over 2013 in a tantalizing fashion. Maher Daniel has been playing along some of the industry’s best [Lee Burridge, Sasha, Richie Hawtin, Dubfire, Josh Wink, Damian Lazarus, and many others] and there is no slowdown in sight. Just recently, we saw the release of a gem that has been getting mega support by the likes of Dixon, Ame, Digweed, Agoria, and Art Department just to name a few. Maher Daniel & Jon Charnis – “Lonely Stars in Open Skies” charms you with a gentle twinkling melody, soothing pads that soar over the top, and a buildup that will surely have your insides aroused with anticipation. Our next SoundPark season closer is an artist that blew the socks off of us throughout the summer of 2013. This song was a staple at All Day I Dream events all summer long and was easily recognizable for its stunning soft lead melody and thunderous bass line. This is a true summer anthem and one we think will stand the test of time. Maher Daniel & Gab Rhome’s “Farewell at the Gates of Dawn” was responsible for some tantalizing, breathtaking, moments over the course of the last year and for that we thank them. This closer was one that had to be left for last. Naveen G is no newcomer to the scene. He had a proper start back in '96. Not only that but some of his very first productions were used on the infallible Global Underground mix compilation series. There is a specific reason why we asked Naveen G to close out our Season One Finale. Throughout all of 2013, Naveen’s mixes were easily some of the most played here in our office. His sound transcends the word “genre” and his track selection from mix to mix has been as close to immaculate as one could imagine. Naveen doesn’t get caught up in the nonsense of playing the freshest promos either. He is equally fantastic technically as he is musically. Furthermore, he is no stranger to the skies. He’s hit dance floors all across the world from South America to Asia alongside some of the industry’s most influential artists (Sasha, John Digweed, Lee Burridge, S.O.S., Hernan Cattaneo, Audiofly and plenty of others). If you somehow have yet to hear Naveen G in his natural element then you have really been missing out. Back in March 2014, SoundPark ran a feature on one of the most successful events in Cairo, Egypt. We were lucky to have Hisham Zahran take the helm for the audio and his debut has been one of our favorites from our entire catalog since. Hisham is a master story teller. His sound is patient, intelligent, and soothing. If you have yet to hear him, today is the day to change that. He has played along side some of the industries best tastemakers (Matthias Meyer, Daniel Bortz, Jody Wisternoff, Blond:ish, Sasse & plenty more). His music had such an impact in our offices that we invited him to come to the US for our very first SoundPark Artist Showcase in Brooklyn, NY for his North American debut in September. Now that Burning Man has passed on by and we look back at the week that was, we wanted to find out what makes our favorite daytime celebration on the playa tick. San Francisco-based Pink Mammoth has been providing an incredibly satisfying dance floor for patrons who want to move their feet on the desert dust for the better part of eleven years. That’s nothing to gloss over. Pink Mammoth is known as a beacon for top shelf music and they consistently curate some of the industry’s best performers to help them craft the perfect vibe. There is an unmistakable feeling of warmth and excitement when pulling your bike up to the camp that is hard to find anywhere else. You’re greeted with smiling faces everywhere and everyone’s spirits are high.

The most fascinating aspect about Pink Mammoth is that with the rising notoriety of Burning Man itself as well as it becoming a premier stage for underground performers, they have consistently stayed true to their roots and regularly give to their community back home. They are an important piece in the fabric of the dance culture in San Francisco and should be considered a benchmark for how to do things right. SoundPark sat down with some of the core members (Jonathan Will, Derek Hena, Rob Adelmann and Zach Walker) to discuss what Pink Mammoth means not only during the one week in the desert, but all year round.

Spend some time in New York and you’ll find that you aren't ever short of emerging artists. Let’s take Playdate New York﻿'s Seth Hosko﻿ for example. Seth is foremost a violinist who really started to engage himself with more experimental sides of electronic music. You can tell that his combination of elegant and sophisticated melodies along with warm accents really comes together in a coherent and beautiful way. There aren't too many emerging artists who can dial it in on such a consistent basis. His steadiness has landed him quality gigs during Detroit’s Movement Electronic Music Festival ﻿as well as the dusty lands of Black Rock City﻿ (Burning Man﻿). Now in its fourth year and steadily growing as a prominent Mexican imprint, label boss Memo Insua has carefully curated a rich catalog of deeper and groovier house cuts. Here at SoundPark, we've always felt strongly about showcasing brands along with the people behind these concepts that contribute to their regional nightlife culture in a real way. It’s a collective process that involves the coordination of plenty of people to put it together. Artists need to make incredible music. Labels need to release this music. Both management and booking agencies work in tandem ensuring their artists are performing at the best shows possible. The event organizer needs to have the vision to pair amazing music with an equally amazing setting. The venue needs to offer incredible sound, a place with a captivating atmosphere, where people feel welcome. The ones who do this right create wonderful experiences that will leave the audience simply buzzing. Music can be an incredibly rich experience that can affect you in powerful ways. When we first discovered Patrick Muller aka Patlac, it was an unbelievable combination of all these elements. This is why we hold this tastemaker in such a high regard. His sound is an amazing blend of punchy hypnotic hooks that share both melodic and groovy overtones. His performances are always exciting journeys that carry energy but never lose that delicate balance of harmony from track to track. SoundPark was excited to sit down with the Hamburg native to discuss his particular style of music when both performing and when writing in the studio as well as some perspective on dealing with stressors that come along with growing notoriety on a global level. For two years, SoundPark has searched, discovered, and carefully curated projects from various cities around the world that are responsible for elevating nightlife culture in their region in a practical way. Sprinkled throughout Toronto’s underground nightlife history are genuine tastemakers who have had their music transcend and influence the way people view the quality of material emanating from the city. Arthur Oskan is one of those beacons. For two decades, Oskan has been establishing himself as one of the most forward-thinking artists emerging from Canada. He’s patient approach to his music shows with the beautiful balance of hypnotic house and techno components he strikes together. As you listen further, the incredibly rich progressive undertones start to settle and that really sets his sound apart from his contemporaries. There is a clear reason why this musician has been nominated for a Canadian Juno Award for his album, ‘A Little More Than Everything.” He’s catalog is incredibly robust with strong releases over My Favorite Robot, Beachcoma, Throne of Blood and most recently, New York based Cityfox. It’s always a challenge to summarize over a decade of work within the music industry. There are heaps of challenges both big and small one has to handle and embrace to remain fluid enough sway with the current of change. One of the biggest correlations that every accomplished artist we feature over SoundPark expresses is an acute level of patience and resolve to never lose sight of their artistic expression in its purest form. With fifteen years under his belt, Los Angeles based Michael Joseph’s accomplishments span across a variety of genres and pseudonyms. 

As SAAND, his melancholic audio tales are no doubt intended to motivate a floor over the course of an evening. The sulky textures that flow through SAAND’s palette add depth while simultaneously controlling the intensity of the music. SAAND consistently demonstrates control over the pace of his music and this skill will allow any melancholic shade of house music to flourish with enthusiasm. SAAND’s ability has amassed a punchy resume of performances that cover some lustrous festivals including Lightning in a Bottle, Woogie Weekend, and Mexico’s BPM among others. His releases are found riddled across affluent labels that are also pushing the envelope in their own way. Favorites including Dilate, Motek, and Union Jack can all be found highlighting SAAND’s work. 

Outside of Joseph’s musical prowess, his contribution to the southern California based music publication Music is 4 Lovers shouldn’t be short changed. As the Director and Senior Editor, Joseph regularly exhibits years of music knowledge to the outlet which has helped advance its reach far beyond its California walls. Music Is 4 Lovers has distinguished itself as a prominent independent music publication and Joseph’s influence is clear. Frankly, this is a great example of what separates an artist from a taste maker. An expert at creating harmonious illusions of sound, Germany’s Powel always finds a way to explore natural elegance and tasteful patience in music. When we first came across Switzerland’s Thomas Wood two years ago, it was an affair with house music that felt warmly familiar yet distinctly refreshing. We were left floored by Wood’s ability to balance rich, soulful, deep house grooves alongside lightly salted tech house percussive rhythms in a meaningful way.

Thomas Wood’s opening track for his 2016 audio tale is already a front runner for our ‘Record of the Year’ and it’s still pretty early in the game for that.

There are three principle components to the work of Toronto based Duo, Nature of Music. There is a sense of patience that their music exudes that really allows their sound to ‘breathe’ in the framework of their sets and their production work. Strings play out, the delays roll off into the distance, and the reverb swells and holds you.

To form this, the duo combines both live performance and DJing into a sophisticated blend that utilizes drum machine rhythm pieces alongside a mesmerizing palette of melodies sprinkled with hints of acapella and spoken word. Rich atmospheric pads combined with string ensembles help create deep harmonies that balance together to play equal rolls in the duo’s theater of sound.

Steaming from a partnership with two decades of experience behind them- Wild Dark takes on contemporary song writing and gives it a unique, thoughtful, modern-take using a wide spectrum of electronic music to tell a story. The trio, comprised of brothers Corey & Ryan Negrin and vocalist Sal Nastasi, stray from cold digital samples in favor of a warmer approach to writing music. This allows them to merge house, techno and natural vocal work into a cohesive concept that uses soulful yet charming song writing to nurture a sophisticated palate of contemporary work.

Ki.Mi.’s take on songwriting is one that pushes traditional tones aside in order to let sounds patiently move around in space... always teasing his knack for stylish storytelling. It makes all the more sense when you realize just how diverse his sound really is. Groovy anchored baselines, tight-tapping hi hats, swelling pass of strings that echo and decay out into the distance and a feverish flair for composition have made Ki.Mi. steadily resonate among our favorites for years. We invited the storyteller from Saint Petersburg (RU) to create a special audio tale for his debut.

Playdate New York's Terron Darby has been an incredible force behind the scenes, in the studio, and on the decks for nearly two decades. Darby has designed professional high end studios for an esteemed list of performers and organizations that include everything from Moby to Vice Media, HBO, and NASA among others. He is also one of the original Avid instructors for their education department and has also taught aspiring musicians of all flavors at Full Sail University. It's special to have someone who has contributed so much to the growth of other eager musicians take the reign themselves. Currently, Darby has set in motion a mysterious new vinyl imprint that's a unique ode to the relationship between music and art. This label will reflect how layer after layer, Darby's music constructs a warm, intelligent vibe filled with rich-brimming strings and beautiful swelling bass lines that articulate what creating and spinning deeper shades of house music is all about. SoundPark is happy to welcome back Terron Darby as he returns for his sophomore take.

Terron Darby - SoundPark (2016)

Well it certainly has been a while since I posted an audio tale of my own over SoundPark Music. For those that have caught me playing over the last two years at one of our little rendezvous, you know what this is about. If you haven't, give it a whirl. There is magic to be found. A tasteful fusion of jazz, breaks, dub, acid rolled into a dense layer of ambient liquid harmonies. Really nice gems in here including some that I hold very close. Since we first featured Switzerland’s Thomas Wood, we have always regarded him as a refreshing ambassador of the love of the craft. Since 2014, Wood has been putting out gaudy heaters over his own vinyl imprint seemingly named, "TW Limited." Personal cuts selected that tell a deep, raw, soulful story of his personal vision of house music. For the ones in the know, TW's theory shines light on the finer, aesthetic details of house that allow this music to hit the ears in a surprisingly contemporary way. For those that don't, Wood gets us there by selecting some of the most harmonious drifts of house music on wax while always exercising an uncanny ability to feather some of the smoothest hits of funk throughout his set at any point. Returning to the park, Thomas Wood narrates his third tale with us.

Galactic. Space. Funk. For nine years now, Adham Zahran has been telling stories by shooting out absurd levels of soul and blues from his fingertips onto the keys. It's a swanky, funk drenched sound that holds vintage aesthetics yet features a nu-school frame. It's been amazing to hear Adham's unique slant on Funk realize into such a cool exploration of the palette. SP invited this snazzy tastemaker to tell a tale through original material and special, personal cuts of Jazz, Funk, and Disco that frame his unique penchant for creating that deep spacey vibe. Gotta celebrate music with this kind of swag having a footprint in Egypt.

Something truly special has been brewing out in one of the finest corners of the South Africa underground. Thankfully we’ve been spending quality time with some of the finest purveyors of deep, soulful grooves in the region and what our ears came across for all intents and purposes was mind bending. For the heads and for the enthusiast, please make sure to take time to acquaint yourselves with the sounds of "Future Bantu" - a tastemaker's exploration of raw, culturally rooted rhythms displayed in a buoyant, kinetic outing. Featuring flurries of percussive rhythm management pieces, Buddah frames his signature into sophisticated arrangements of sultry, dust-speckled soul. To further explore this unique sound aesthetic, one can check out the wonderful effort, Super Black Tapes which features a tight knit collection of mix-tapes from the visionaries of Future Bantu. We've been anticipating this tale for quite some time now so without further ado, hailing from the future, Fred Buddah makes his very special SoundPark debut.

Initially making his debut on one of our favorite efforts Blind Jacks Journey, Istanbul based talent Aleksandir is getting a lot of love for his ability to lay down unquestionably silky records. Surely there is a wispy-smoke like charm to his music. Most notably, he displays a beautifully patient touch on the keys that diffuses into an arrangement of warm sounds and tasteful harmonies. Bespoke Musik doesn't care how the music is made, they care that the music is honest. Over the course of the last two years they have consistently strung together a fantastic line up of Artists to perform at their events but what makes their events so great? Is it the intimate spaces? Maybe the low-lights? How about the beautiful candles lighting up the DJ booth? Either way, the people at Bespoke definitely get it. The vibe is always good and we found ourselves right in the middle of it. Bespoke recently brought in the Suol Music family for a wicked tour through out the US and they didn't disappoint. We fast forward just a little bit further into the night where Daniel Bortz took over the decks. He closed out this beautiful evening of music in New York flawlessly.
