A film score for a film that has yet to be produced. Featuring loud bombast, steady climbing rhythms and quiet contemplative sections. I use this piece as an example of my breadth of knowledge for Orchestration and general musical composition writing.

Stormscape

Short piece for my second composition class of the year.

Small duo for tenor saxophone and B-flat clarinet, based on my own transcription of a Romanian folk tune. The assignment focus was to incorporate as much of the source material as possible in a new standalone work, but the musical focus was on exploring syncopation and off-beat rhythms. 
The original transcription was used to create a sort-of tone row, going from most to least used note in the transcription as the main motivic progression, with the music evolving from that sequence of notes.

Whiskey On The Rocks

The result of my mid-semester jazz project.

After learning about functional harmony within jazz, over mid-semester break we were to create a jazz chart for a trio with room for soloing.

A huge thank you to the trio members who performed my piece in the class recording session: Mark Donlon (piano), Chris Beernink (upright bass), and Lance Phillip (drums).
Thanks also to the NZSM advanced recording class, and to Prof. John Psathas for organising the opportunity for our pieces to be performed and recorded live.

Velvetine Flux

Short ambient piece created for my second core composition class for the year.

After exploring techniques and important figures in the ambient music scene (including a focus on the works and compositional processes of Brian Eno), I used the various synthesiser libraries in Logic Pro X to create an ambient piece inspired by the atmosphere and imagery of outer space.

My friend Tahlia posted a challenge on Facebook to arrange one or both of two melodies. As I don't often pay much attention to harmony in arranging, I thought this would be a good opportunity to excercise those skills!
