Windchimes In A Gentle Breeze - Relaxing Soundscapes - Album Sample

I was sitting at Fremont State Lake in Fremont Ne, and heard Fire and Rescue Sirens, so being the good field recordist that I am I decided to hit the record button.... I certainly didn't expect to record this!

Enjoy the relaxing sounds of trains whistling off in the distance as they pass through town during a gentle thunderstorm.  

This 6 minute sample is a small portion of a hour long recording featuring a gentle rain shower with low rumbles of thunder and crickets overlaid with several different train whistles recorded over a two year period.

Distant Trains Echoing in the Rain Vol.3 - Album Sample

Here's a nice recording of a Hi-Speed coal train coming to a quick stop to let a freight train pass through.  It was pretty windy and I was set up right across from a grain elevator running its blowers.   

This track has some good metal grinding along with some light rail car slack and metal impacts.  This is a free download at 24Bit 48K... Enjoy!

Freight Train Hi-Speed Stop with light Slack

We had our first thunderstorm of 2016 on March 14th.  We almost had a thunderstorm the night before but as soon as I set the mics out and hit record it disappeared!

This storm started around 11:30pm with 50+ mph winds and I didn't think I was going to get to test my new mic setup, a pair of Sennheiser MKH8040st microphones inside a Rycote ORTF blimp.  

Luck would have it that the gust front came through and the winds calmed down enough to set the mics out.  I was able to get 60 mins worth of rain & thunder before the winds picked up again.  Here is a small sample of some of the thunder I captured...

First Thunderstorm of 2016 Eastern Nebraska-MKH8040ST ORTF

As the evening sun starts to dip below the horizon the sky fills with Sandhill Cranes making their way from the fields to roost on the Platte River for the night.  First in groups then by the thousands. . . 

This is small sample of a hour long "Nebraska Soundscape Series" album that will be released shortly.   This album captures the Sandhill Cranes as they start to fly in from the fields to the river for the evening,  It starts out with small groups of cranes flying overhead and slowly builds as more cranes fly in.  Towards the end of the album you will hear the constant roar of thousands of cranes as they congregate on the river for the night. 

The spring migration brings hundreds of thousands of Sandhill Cranes through Nebraska's Platte River valley to feed and rest before heading north for the summer.  While feeding in the Platte River basin they will add 80% of their fat reserves to help them on the long journey north to Canada, Alaska and even Siberia.  

Growing up in Nebraska sometimes has it perks!  I was able to get on private land to make this recording.  I set the mics up in a field adjacent to the Platte river that I knew would have lots of cranes flying over as they made their way from the feeding grounds to the river.   

Sandhill Cranes are very skittish birds that are under stress during their migration.  One must take very special care as to not disrupt them as they feed or roost.  I set the mics up mid to late afternoon while the cranes were still out feeding and let the recorder run through the night.

Sandhill Cranes Spring Migration-Platte River, Nebraska - Relaxing Nature Sounds - Album Sample

Here's a short recording of Tornado Sirens sounding in Omaha NE on April 27th 2016.  At 3:30pm NWS confirmed multiple touchdowns a few miles to the Southwest of this recording...

Eerie Siren warns of a Tornado - Omaha, NE - April 27, 2016

I love recording thunderstorms!  There is almost nothing more exciting than putting a mic to the sounds of mother nature and seeing what I capture.  With that being said, recording thunder can be quite challenging.  


This recording is a good example of taking a almost perfect lightning strike and fixing it in RX5...

- First I ran Declip to bring the peaks down below the clipping threshold.
- Next I ran Declick to clean up the clicking sounds caused from the preamps clipping.
- I adjusted the gains down a few dBs then ran Denoise to help clean up the rain sounds.

The adjustments are subtle and a good set of headphones will be needed to really hear the differences.

Thunder cleanup with RX5 - Demo 1



Here is a extreme thunder clap that I was able to recover using iZotope RX5.  First I ran Declip to reduce the peaks by -6.0 dB.  Next I lowered the Gain by -1.0 dB then ran the Declick to remove any clicking noises caused by the preamps clipping.  

This is about the limit that I would go for trying to recover a distorted audio clip.  Beyond this the audio starts to get weird artifacts that becomes noticeable.

Extreme Thunder Cleanup with RX5 - Demo 2

Relax to the deep, drone sounds of a spaceship's engine as you travel across the galaxy on a intergalactic journey.  

This recording is completely different than what we usually offer in our lineup of relaxing sounds.  

Since a little kid, I've always been curious as to what a spaceship would sound like traveling through space.  Coming from the Star Trek and Star Wars era, I've always loved the way the star ships sounded.

This album has been a (work in progress) for the last several years from various field recording I have collected.  All the sounds used in this album were segments edited from nature or soundscape recordings.  There is NO synthesized, binaural beats or isochronic tones in the recording!  It's pure nature... just slowed down a bit:)

Journey Through Space - Relaxing Ambient Space Drone Sounds - Album Sample

Fill your sense with the beautiful sounds of birds singing in the forest by a gentle wilderness stream. The cheerful musical sounds of playful songbirds will both make you smile and soothe your soul. . .

May 17, 2016 and the songbirds were in full spring mode.  I headed to Boyer Chute NWR and set up camp for the day. I had my Sennheiser MKH8040-ST ORTF mics attached to a tripod and set up in different locations, some deep under the forest canopy, then out in the open area trying to capture the sounds of the refuge.  My best recordings came from just inside the fringe of the forest where I was able to get some nice echoing sounds.  I let the SD-702 run for a hour or so then tried a different location.  The sample above is a culmination of several different locations mixed together giving the soundscape a nice, rich texture of songbirds and a creek for ambiance...   

Back in 2011 the refuge was devastated by flood waters from the Missouri river.  The park was under water for a entire summer and when the waters finally subsisted, left massive sand deposits, debris and dead trees.  Needless to say, the once beautiful park teaming with wildlife was a massive wasteland.

The flood was caused by man trying to control the river...  mother nature has stepped in and reclaimed the land with new growth trees and the wildlife has returned... Thank you Mother Nature!
