The feminine has always been worshipped in Indian culture in various forms. This wonderful song by the great Tamil poet, Mahakavi Bharathiyar is in praise of the goddess and his experience of her. The song by Sounds of Isha is set to a tune as an offering to Linga Bhairavi Devi.

Linga Bhairavi is the most exuberant expression of the Divine Feminine, residing in a triangular-shaped abode at the Velliangiri Foothills. Unique in her manifestation in the form of a linga, Devi was consecrated by Sadhguru as a powerful energy form with a solidified mercury core. Representing the creative and nurturing aspects of the universe, she is the ultimate manifestation of the Mother Goddess – powerful and all-encompassing.

Thunbam illadha nilaiye shakthi

While words have their intellectual appeal, instrumental music can sometimes create an openness that language cannot. Among the many instrumental pieces Sounds of Isha has created to manifest different ambiences, Madhyamavathi is one of the more beautiful ones. The name reflects the raga on which the song is based. 

We have also had the fortune of some part-time volunteers, who have contributed to our music. We could use this opportunity to say how Sounds of Isha is not just some small group of people in the ashram but consists of so many meditators all over India and the world, all contributing to the music and connected with the common bond of Sadhguru's Grace. 

The flute melody for this piece was composed by one of our meditators. He wanted to offer it to sadhguru and as we worked with it to create a song, we had the fortune of roping in a few more contributors from amongst our volunteers. The result is what you hear. 

We had no particular plan as to what ambience to manifest through this song. However, from our experience, we find that it can be soulful, meditative or relaxing–soothing and settling.

“Eppadi Thaan…” was written by OothukaduVenkataSubbaiyar, and looks at life from the perspective of a devotee (of Krishna, in this song).
The song describes how once a person is devout, all they see is sweetness around them. The buzzing of bees becomes a song, Krishna’s mischief become endearing pranks, and his many heroics become awe-inspiring legends. Such is the sweetness of devotion that it transform’s the devotees experience of life in powerful ways.
Devotion has been an important part of spiritual processes in India. Stories of Radhe Krishna, Mira Bhai, and the Nayanmaars have been told and retold for centuries, and many devotees are seen as no differentthan the Divine. 

Sadhguru say, “Devotion is not an act; it is not directed towards something or the other; the object of devotion is immaterial. It is just that with devotion, you have dissolved all the resistance in you so that the divine can transpire like breath. The divine is not an entity sitting up there; it is a living force in every moment of your life.”

‘Wholeness’ was a 90-Day program conducted by Sadhguru in 1994, with a small band of seekers. Many years later, with the Isha Yoga Center more established, ‘Wholeness’ became the name of a 7-Day introductory program, also conducted by Sadhguru.

One of our early attempts at instrumental music, this song, ‘Wholeness’, was intended as an ambience to start the program on the first day – a way for the participants to settle into Sadhguru’s presence and be open to the process.The name ‘Wholeness’ has managed to stick all these years, thanks to the program, but the music has undergone various transformations and permutations. We have also been fortunate to have several professional artists come and contribute their expertise, enhancing the overall musicality of the piece. Here is the latest rendering – a live recording in the presence of Sadhguru.

"Chandrajeevan" – The title track from our latest album, created for a sathsang with #Sadhguru during a full moon night, is a song about how our lives are like the cycles of the moon. 

The song also compares how a seeker's journey is possible only because of the Guru's Grace, in much the same way that the moon's radiance is possible only because of the sun's light.

“Uyirnokkam” is an inspired creation by Sounds of Isha based on Tamil lyrics originally written by Sadhguru. The title of the song means the “purpose of life is life itself”. Replying to the much asked question, “What is the purpose of life?”, Sadhguru has often answered that life is too big for any purpose – this is the essence of “Uyir Nokkam.”

In Sadhguru’s words, “Right now, for most people, life means their job, the new house they’re building, the car they bought, their family and so many other things. That’s not life. It is not even your body, mind, thought or emotion. Life means what’s throbbing within you. It is only because “this” is ON that everything else seems to be meaningful. If “this” stops, nothing around you will mean a damn thing to you or anyone.

And life is a purpose unto itself, it need not have another purpose. It is a big enough phenomenon. Its magnitude is too large for it to be focused on something else. It is a purpose and an end unto itself.”

Mystics have always used sound in ways far beyond the realm of mere entertainment - by breathing in an ethereal dimension into simple rustic sounds from life around to give us a taste of the beyond. A simple twang of the ektara often did what a thousand words could not do to touch people.

Sounds of Isha is Sadhguru's own home grown, anomalous group of 'musicians' - inspired by their deep yearning and sense of gratitude. Dabbling with and melting into their instruments, their work is a subtle fusion of the rich and diverse beings that they are. The group members are full-time volunteers with Isha Foundation, living a life of dedication and austerity; thus, their inspirational songs are usually created after a full day's activity, due to their passion and zest to share a different dimension of the foundation's work.

Their melodies are a fusion of music from different parts of the world - traversing effortlessly and seamlessly across boundaries and cultures. Whilst the music of these songs sooth our minds and the melodies enthrall us, the true potential of the songs is in their capability to instill in us an element of the eternal silence that touches the core of the human being. The performances of Sounds of Isha are set apart to deliver a potent and intoxicating ethereal concoction, transporting those who listen into subtler states of being - becoming the basis for inner exploration.
