A brief comparison of the two voices used in the railway station PA announcements in Sergiyev Posad now and then. First, a human female voice recorded in 2010 – we may not consider it perfect but it still personal. Then starts a modern-day tannoy, a computer-generated voice that gradulally replaces the human announcers. This change – one of the biggest in decades – went almost unnoticed by the public.

Краткое сравнение двух голосов, используемых для громкого оповещения на вокзале Сергиева Посада сегодня и в недавнем прошлом. Сначала – обычный женский голос. Вряд ли его можно назвать совершенным, но тем не менее он носит отражение личности говорящего. Затем звучит современный образец, синтезированная компьютерная речь, постепенно вытесняющая "человеческие" объявления. Эти перемены, одни из самых крупных за несколько десятилетий, прошли практически незаметно.

I've never happened to record horses somehow, even though the horses are one the most interesting animals sound wise. There was a chance lately at the annual Mayor Cup horse races here in Sergiyev Posad held at the eponymous equestrian club. I sneaked inside the stables to hear the horses snorting and sniffing. Sorry no neigh this time.

An old tree by the railroad in Sergiyev Posad. Two Church Audio mics were placed inside the hollows and cracks of the bark, and this is what could be heard by someone who may be living there like a squirrel or marten on a windy day like this. A one-minute preview of a longer walk by the Zagorskoye morye empty lake shore in the Semkhoz area in Sergiyev Posad. The shores these days present a striking contrast to those of summer with shepherds, bikers, raindrops and creaking pines instead of swimmers laughter and thumping car stereos.

Минутный отрывок из более продолжительной прогулки по берегу Загорского моря в Семхозе близ Сергиева Посада. Прибрежные звуки в это время года совсем не похожи не летние: вместо смеха купающихся, вместо бронебойных ударов автомагнитол – пастухи, велосипедисты, ветер, дождь и скрипучие сосны.

For those who haven't heard about it yet, I've spent some time in October 2012 recording empty shores and beaches in and around Sergiyev Posad. Those sparse and sometimes murky sounds recorded there are to be transformed a new series currently in progress. This time – the sounds of the Lesnoye lake in Sergiyev Posad. It's a man-made reservoir, a popular amoung the swimmers in summer. Now, we only hear the waves splashing (A), the fishing reel chattering (B), the leaves flapping in the wind (B), the wind itself (A+B), and to the great surprise, the amateur saxophone players rehearsing in the woods nearby (B).

Для тех, кто, возможно, ещё не слышал, напомню, что осенью 2012 года я провел некоторое время на побережьях и пляжах в Сергиевом Посаде и его окрестностях. Записанные там звуки – редкие, иногда довольно сумрачные – постепенно формируют новый цикл, работа над которым идёт в эти дни. Вот записи с берегов Лесного озера, рукотворного водоёма в Сергиевом Посаде. Оно популярно летом, а теперь там можно услышать только плеск волн (A), треск сматываемых удочек (B), трепет листьев на ветру (B), сам ветер(A+B), и к большому удивлению – саксофонистов-любителей, репетирующих в лесу (B).

My father has brought this shell home way back in 1962. They say you can hear the the sea by pressing the conch against the ear. I did it a thousand times. The mics go into the shell this time.
