   EVOLUTION (II) (13'20'') In this piece, thanks to the evolution of its tuning mechanism, the timpani presents itself first as a melodic instrument and then becomes part of the rhythmic base with patterns played on its shell (like the Latin "cascara") over which a virtual instrument improvises.

Like a skydiving glide, the appearance of the ordered groove free us from the feeling of instability

MOVIE  (12'20'') The defining characteristic of this composition is the unison between the timpani and an electronic moog sound featured all along the piece. Like in a movie soundtrack, the musical ambient changes abruptly on every new scene, but the main theme always comes back...

FREEDOM' SON (10'50'') This composition is divided into three parts: on the first one, the timpani expresses itself freely until it is interrupted by a robotic rhythm at the beginning of the second part - It then develops into a complex polyrhythm between the acoustic and electronic instruments, then the African "clave" present in the second part escapes the groove, leading us towards the third and final part...

Sound Tales ...of Timpani - FREEDOM' SON (extract)

NAQQARA  (13'52'')  Naqqara is the name of the drums that the ottoman army carried on their military conquests, playing them at unison while approaching their enemy created a devastating psychological effect. Inspired by this, the composition features all the percussion at unison (created by offsetting the rhythmic cells) then different electronic elements join in adding tension and uncertainty.

WHEN WE MET (11'23'') As a prelude to the piece, an ambience where all the resources for sound generation get together through idiophones and other electronic elements. Gongs, metal sheets, cymbals over timpani head... seem to imitate other sounds of electronic origin, or perhaps are those imitating these ? From this convergence derives an orderly groove, where the main theme gets finally defined by the timpani, after an improvisation over the rhythmic recurrence created by the electronic pulsing.

SOUND TALES...

Researching the acoustic possibilities of orchestra instruments is not a new thing and neither is adding electronic sounds to contemporary classical music. This project wants to take out of context some of the less known (and sometimes considered least versatile) orchestra instruments, like the percussion family, in an effort to bring them closer to a parallel music universe populated by sequencers, loops and programming. By exploiting their acoustic and functional possibilities and reshaping their way of expression, these instruments jump into the world of electronic music production, everyday more relevant and present in our society.

The tools for the creation of electronic music have developed and multiplied in an spectacular way over the last decade. As well as opening new landscapes to experimental music, the tools have also changed the concept of instrument and instrumentalist. This concept expands now to include those people versed in their virtual instruments, control pads and synthesised sounds. To actively participate within this newly adopted role, these once exclusive orchestra instruments abandon their physical and acoustic boundaries to adapt to the electronic way and speak the same language.

"SOUND TALES" Wants to recreate the sonic fantasies of instruments that live tied up to their own idiosyncrasy.
