Khotin - Why Don't We Talk

A kaleidoscope of rainbow textures and rhythms disperse into the exotic soundscape of ‘Tropical’. Electronics, real folk instruments and noise-making objects feature here generously on this six-track concept album, blending together a sonic palette influenced by a rich variety of music, people and places.

My Panda Shall Fly AKA musician and visual artist Suren Seneviratne, is set to release ‘Tropical’ via Soundway Records on 4th August 2014.

The material was initially written over the course of a few months during what Seneviratne called "a beautiful burst of inspiration". Working with veteran producer Asier Leatxe Ibanez d'Opakoa (Electric Lady Studios, NYC), Seneviratne then set about disassembling all the songs and re-working them meticulously, enriching the sounds by adding a huge range of live instrumentation, before processing the audio through vintage analogue studio gear. 

Suren Seneviratne, born in Sri Lanka before settling in London in 1996, first caught the attention of the music world with a remix that featured on Pitchfork back in 2010. Since then he has released a plethora of diverse records, gaining support from the likes of Clash Magazine, The Fader, Mixmag and Dazed Digital, as well as regularly touring internationally. He has also remixed the likes of The Weeknd, Stay Positive & Little Boots as well as appearing at festivals like BBC Hackney Weekender, Outlook Croatia & Glade as well as performing at prestigious venues such as The Design Museum, Tate Modern & Barbican. 

My Panda Shall Fly has gone through many an incarnation but it was around seven years ago that music from other continents first began piquing his interest, filling his head with new sounds that eventually seeded the ideas for this project. On ‘Rainfall’ he works with the sound of tongue mallets, cymbals and synthesized bass while on ‘'Yapeyú' he manipulates the sound of pan pipes with poly-rhythmic Rhumba percussion.

With the release of ‘Tropical’, My Panda Shall Fly has yet again set himself apart as one of the most unique contemporary electronic musicians around today.

Boundary-pushing composer and sound designer Andi Otto returns with his new album ‘Rwandance’, which sees live instruments, studio recordings and sampled archival material melded together as part of an electrifying reimagining of the musical traditions of Rwanda.

‘Rwandance’ is a collaboration between Rwandan dancer and musician Evariste Karinganire and cello player and electronic music producer Andi Otto, brought together by a chance connection. Inspired by Steve Reich, Mark Pritchard’s Harmonic 313 and Otto’s mesmerising musical experiences touring India, Otto built software to translate the intensity of Karinganire’s hand claps into different synth notes - the structure and time signature of traditional Rwandan music providing the framework for Otto’s creations, new instruments and sounds incorporated into its parameters. 

Otto follows a path similar to many producers from Latin America’s burgeoning electronic music scene but instead of using Andean folk music as a starting point, he reappraises Rwandan music mirroring traditional sounds but similarly, reimagined through a contemporary lens. ‘Rwandance’ follows Otto’s 2016 link-up with Indian singer and actress M.D. Pallavi and underground hit ‘Bangalore Whispers’, a showcase for his original approach to cross-cultural musical dialogue. He has since cemented that reputation with subsequent albums “Via” and “Bow Wave”, weaving global sounds into his distinct sonic approach.

Shika Shika is a home for music that combines organic and electronic sounds, a meeting place between the past and the future. (They also put an emphasis on supporting artists, splitting profits in their favour.) This chimes exactly with what Otto wanted to achieve in his collaboration with Karinganire, taking deeply-rooted traditions and giving them a new sonic make-up.

In the spirit of its creator, Lézard Vert (Green Lizard) is much more than a music band. It hails a concept of participation, a record label in itself, of which it boldly assumes the parenthood, but where each musician plays on musical pieces of their peers. A concept that shaped from the Carrousel experience. During a prolonged retreat in Manapany “country of Lézard Vert”, Zoun then started to lay the foundation for the album eponymous album. Zoun concurrently follows the career of two accomplished musicians, namely; Teddy Baptiste and Kiki Mariapin, with whom he occasionally performed, with Gilbert Pounia who provoked the spark leading to the encounter with Philippe De Magnée, a Belgium born sound engineer, invited on Reunion island to record Ziskakan.

Pioneer of the electric maloya, agile composer of various influences, Zoun, is proud to see his Lézard Vert resurface on turntables. This new version initiated by Wazis Pounia gave birth to a collaboration between Ziskakan and the Mauritian label, Babani Records. The remastering has been entrusted to Neil Combstock, sound engineer of the label, based in the United Kingdom and the illustration to the Mauritian artist, Guillaume Clarisse, all under the art direction of Avneesh Bacha. This reissue in 33turns vinyl discs and streaming has the merit of bringing to the ear a whole new generation, recorded in 1983, a key era in the history of Reunionese music. With the passing of time, a number of musical treasures have been unfortunately lost, forgotten, or never even recorded. Thus, when the opportune presents itself, it is of our duty to honour them with a re-publishing.
