This talk was recorded on a RØDE SmartLav+ to an iPhone 5 running the RØDE Rec app. There was a noisy air conditioning fan in the room but I decided not to use Izotope RXIII denoising at all in the end, so the audio you hear just has a touch of EQ and Compression applied, no denoising.

Talk: Intro to DSLR Audio with RØDE Mics

With much respect to James Murphy, here's us testing the Moog Minitaur by running it into the new Lynx Hilo Interface, recorded into PreSonus Studio One 2. Studio One is firing off an LCD Soundsystem-esque bassline on the Moog into the Hilo...and it sounds pretty damn sweet. No processing whatsoever applied to this audio - it's totally dry.

TimeFactor is running the DigitalDelay algorithm and PitchFactor is on Quadravox - I'm sweeping the dry/wet and the A/B Dly mix on each to ride the effect, and feeback is being adjusted on TimeFactor at the end...

Only extra is a little SSL compression to tame.

This is a very quick test with some messy music I was making at home. Apologies if we have musical differences, but aside from that I think it does illustrate an aspect of what makes the UAD Studer A800 so sweet to have. Here's what the test is:

I've got 6 tracks in Ableton Live running mostly the Operator soft-synth, there's a mangled drumbreak in there, and some of the Cassette 808 samples from Goldbaby I've sequenced. It's a bit of a smash.

1) Initially you hear 8 bars of it dry, which is to say there's a little reverb and delay on two sends (and a touch of autofilter on one part) but by 'dry' what we mean is you're hearing some drums and softsynths with NO COMPRESSION at all, and there is NO EQ at all. Make of it what you will. I'd initially put a load of compressors and EQ on it as I felt it needed them, for this test I took them all off.

2) After 8 Bars you then hear it with an instance of the Studer A800 on each track, AND one on the Master as well. The settings between instances were ganged and are as follows: GP9 Stock, 30ips, +6 Cal (which is normal I think), and the input is possibly 1, maybe 2 db pushed up. The only major adjustment is I HAVE pushed up the HF Driver setting a little as this brings the high frequencies back. It was a little dark without that, and I wanted to bring a bit of sparkle back on top. Studer A800 is the ONLY effect added.

When instantiated in this way the compounding effect of the plugin is apparent to me all of a sudden! You'd want to do a bit of EQ'ing to tame the low end, but it's pretty close to sounding like a finished mix and all I did was bung it on each track, drive it a tiny tiny bit and lift the HF driver a touch. Tell me if you disagree, but I think it sounds glued together in the second half like it didn't before. It was a little louder when you engage the Studer so I've level matched it as carefully as I can.

A load of drones, pads, basses, squelches, tones and noises edited from a lunchtime experimental play-about with the white-wood Moog Voyager Select we have here.
Except for the very end, this is a totally dry recording. Hopefully you get an idea of the level of beauty that tears from the outputs, and the kind of range you can coax from it - a thing of beauty is a joy forever.

Exploring the Moog Voyager

If you only listen to part of this, fast forward to the Reverse and Shimmer sections, those algorithms are freaking ace!

It's a rough and ready preview, but we took a prototype Eventide Space pedal and put a Moog Voyager select through it, recording the results in stereo. This is a deep pedal with dedicated controls for the 12 algorithms (plus High/Low EQ controls and 100 presets!)...I'm confident your own creativity will coax a lifetime of different textures out of one beyond what was possible for us in the time available! This was recorded using the line-in on a Zoom H2 hence the interference and noise in parts - the Moog certainly doesn't exhibit noise like this and the Eventide definitely doesn't! Just all we had available in the time this unit was here. 

Interestingly this particular unit has gone on to the hands of Jonny Buckland of Coldplay fame. Hope to next hear this little black box on something a bit more musical...

Moog Voyager thru Eventide Space reverb pedal

Listening on headphones or studio monitors recommended!

Here's a set of tests we did to demonstrate some of the reverbs available on the UAD platform. In this test are EMT140, EMT250, RealVerb Pro and Dreamverb on two source clips, a Violin and Female Vocal. Here's the running order:

1) Violin Dry
2) EMT140 Plate on a Send (Violin being 100% sent to EMT) - default setting using Plate 'B'
3) Vocal thru EMT140 with exact same settings as above.
4) Vocal again, but this time going through the EMT250 "Female Vocal" preset.
5) Vocal part dry, then effected by RealVerb "Medium Dark Room" preset, then dry again.
6) Vocal thru DreamVerb's "Vocal - Mellow Lady" Preset
7) Violin through Realverb Pro's "Big Bright Hall".

All these tests were done with a UAD-2 Solo PCIe. I've talked to a lot of artists who swear by the EMT140, and I'm inclined to agree. Sounds pretty beautiful, don't you think?
